So, I got my bfp on Thursday and an booked in to see a doctor on Friday morning. I'm really unsure what to expect, I hear they don't test for pregnancy so what do actually do?

Pat you on the head and tell you to book to see a midwife. My GP had nothing to do with my pregnancy (and I doubt I'm alone). However the midwife was lovely, she'll take your history and exam you blood pressure and urine tests.

Very little. Record your dates, tell you to take folic acid and refer you on to the mw.

Yonididnaedaethat · 14/09/2013 20:32

Where I stay you don't need to see a GP, the receptionist just told me to phone the midwife booking phone line direct.

Lj8893 · 14/09/2013 20:32

My doctor asked why I was there! I had to remind him that it was my first child and I had no idea what I was meant to be doing.

Sarahmains40 · 14/09/2013 20:42

I went and she said CONGRAULATIONS and told me to take fol acid and then to phone up an early bird clinic (only in certain areas) went to that and was still pretty unclear. Then seen my midwife finally last Monday finally felt like I was getting some were. I didn't expect a red carpet as I know I'm not the First Lady to be preganant but I feel totally clueless. I think your pretty much on your own untill first scan. No one had took a pregancy test off me as tests are good but I feel worried that no one has proof I'm pregnant lol. Once you see a midwife you feel much better :)

Congratulations you must be excited :)

hettienne · 14/09/2013 20:46

You might not need to see a doctor - are the midwives based at your GP centre? They will probably want to see you between 8-10 weeks to book in. There's nothing really to do before then except take folic acid.

shoegal84 · 14/09/2013 20:47

Thanks all. I am really excited, although worry that I might not actually be pregnant (despite 2 bfps) and guess I was hoping for some kind of reassurance from my gp. Doesn't sound likely from what you have all said though!

Can't wait till the scan so I can see for myself that it's real!

Oh and I'm already taking folic acid!

my doctor laughed and said are you ok?
She knows me quite well and I have quite a history so it was ok Grin

IrisWildthyme · 15/09/2013 06:48

Unless you have a specific health issue which could affect or be affected by your pregnancy, cancel the GP appointment and make an appointment with your nearest community midwife team instead. The GP doesn't really need to know and won't contribute anything useful to your experience!

shoegal84 · 15/09/2013 09:50

How do I book in with a midwife?

OP posts:
Poppy954 · 15/09/2013 09:54

You shouldn't cancel your gp appointment as it works differently in different areas. In my area you have to see the gp to register the pregnancy and the gp then books your maternity care at the hospital of
Your choice. If in doubt ring the gp surgery tomorrow, tell them you are newly pregnant and can they advise you on the next step - gp or mw direct.

Sammi1986 · 15/09/2013 09:56

My GP surgery gave me a pack with a list of phone numbers so I could choose where I see a midwife. Aside from prescribing high strength frolic acid I didn't need to see the GP

hettienne · 15/09/2013 09:58

I would also ring and ask who you need to book in with first.

Ok thanks all, will call tomorrow and ask docs What's best to do.

This is so confusing already and I haven't even got started yet! Don't know what I'd do without mumsnet!

I went and told my GP about 4 days after I got my BFP - I have a few health problems though. She just gave me a 'congratulations you're pregnant' pack, told me they don't test for pregnancy, asked me to provide a urine sample to check for some stuff (can't remember what) and told her the Community Midwife would be in touch.

I had my Booking in appointment with the Midwife about 10 days later and by the time I saw her my GP had already contacted my local hospital, had booked me an appointment with an obstetrician and booked me a date for my 12 week scan Smile The midwife couldn't believe how efficient the GP had been as she was expecting to do all that herself.

Just ring up your GP surgery tomorrow and ask them what their protocol is. If you don't have any health problems then it may be that you can just skip straight to seeing a midwife x

I agree that doctors don't have much to do with ante natal care unless there are other medical issues. I would ask for a certificate that exempts you from paying for prescriptions and to get free dental care.
