Mice in the house...

We recently found out that we have mice in our kitchen. My instinct is to use the humane traps, but we haven't caught any this way so far. I'm in my 1st trimester and I'm wondering if mice carry any genuine risk in pregnancy (rather than extremely rare diseases in the US, which is all I read about when I Googled this!).

Hi bumble, congratulations on your pregnancy! Do you have cats? Toxoplasmosis spreads to cats from them eating infected mice (who loose their instinct to stay away from cats, so if you have cats and mice they probably have toxoplasmosis)- its the cat faeces that is dangerous to pregnant women tho. I don't know of any other diseases specifically, except that it is generally bad to eat food that has been contaminated/ off plates/ worktops etc that they have run over. I had mice recently, and found they were even going into the cutlery drawer on their way onto the worktops. Good luck getting rid of them!

Another thing I just remembered. Before I had cats I also had mice once, and the only way I managed to get rid of them (using humane traps) was to get some used (but not dirty) cat litter from a friend. The mice thought a cat had moved in and left within a couple of days.

Heya hunni,

Ive been doing tones of research myself because of my lil zoo,
Unless you eat them raw or start handling their waste you are fine.
Use gloves if you absolutely have to touch any waste or better yet get someone else to do it for you.
They still arn't the best thing to have around though the best thing to do is either get the exterminator out or unfortunately for the little mice put bait boxes down, baby comes first sorry mice x

Hi, can't help as far as risks are concerned but try putting peanut butter in the trap, it seems to be the only thing that's worked for us!

We had mice, but dodn't choose the humane option. Wedid have very eeffective traps which were dipped in the middle so the mouse was caught clean on the neck and died instantly.

We used Nutella and bacon rind as bait.

We got rid of them in about two weeks. It was much quicker than I expected, but they clearly hadn't been there long.

If we had them again, I would just do what was necessary to get rid of them, especially being pregnant.

we had mice. we tried to handle it on our own with traps but although we caught a few we still had them.

a pest company came round, they tried traps but that didnt solve the problem so they stuffed up and boarded over every tiny little hole where the mice were getting in. it was amazing - it worked instantly. no more mice since then.

i was so stressed about it because we had a crawling baby - i was so happy when i realised the mice problem was gone. i would really recommend you get professionals in to sort the problem.

hope this helps

"We used Nutella and bacon rind as bait."

I have nothing to add. I just wanted to say this has made me hungry.
