Hi there

I am vegetarian and intend to continue being so throughout my pregnancy. Just wondering if there are any other vegetarian ladies who would like to chat about this topic etc?

Hi! I'm not veggie but have been pretty much completely off meat this pregnancy! I eat tons of frozen spinach (in things like curries and I've just put some in a veggie chilli, yum!) washed down with orange juice. I'm also eating omelettes quite a lot (spinach and cheese mainly!) and have just come out of a peanut butter craving. The only meat I've wanted/eaten has been chicken, and not even that as often as usual.

How strange! I find it quite interesting that my body is rejecting meat yet (touch wood) all is looking good for the pregnancy and my iron levels etc!

Veggie and 34+6 here! Had some cravings for Big Macs earlier on - not sure how my body got the idea, I've been veggie for 17 years - but homemade veggie burgers with plenty of gherkins seemed to sort that one out. My iron levels are fine, and I've been generally lucky. I'm knackered and struggling a bit with SPD now, but I am the size of a house, so its hardly surprising.

Vegan throughout pregnancy and two years of breast feeding here. Never anaemic...child weaned as vegan, raised vegetarian, over 6' tall and as strong as an ox!

I did battle a nine month craving for Cadbury's chocolate though. I don't even like it!

Hi Blackholes - hope you find lots of nice vegi foods to eat!

TheCatIsUpTheDuff - lol I love your screen name! Yum I like gherkins too.

Tchaikovsky - that is great you are such a healthy vegan as was your child. Do you eat/drink a lot of soya?

This is interesting. I didnt even give it a second thought about being veggie when i was pregnant, in my last pregnancy i had very had sickness and the only thing i wanted to eat was vegetables - nothing else just veg! DD (2 and a half) is veggie and DS who is only 10wks will also be raised veggie. It was a touchy subject for a long time as DH is a meat eater but we have agreed that when they are old enough to fully understand where meat comes from etc then they will make their own decision. I guess it also depends on why u r veggie in the first place...

Interesting topic. I'm 22 weeks and vegetarian have been for over 10 years so didn't even think about it.

Been very keen on yogurt and milk but accepted that and just ate more :) I'd actually say the first three months was a white diet more than anything as the only thing that didn't make me I'll was white carbs.

We're planning on raising our daughter as vegi at home but allow her to eat anything out of the house at relatives etc. Hopefully that will work but got a while to work it out Smile

I'm 35+5 into a veggie pregnancy. Very healthy and iron levels are great. I did find myself drawn to dairy a lot in the earlier days but no meat cravings thankfully!

If DH was veggie too, I'd be bringing the child up veggie no question. As he isn't, it's not quite as clear cut. We've not completely decided but as I'm the main cook, the food is predominantly veggie anyway.

Hello, I'm a second generation veggie currently 17 weeks with my second DC. If anyone has any doubts or people bugging them about needing to eat meat, take heart from the fact my mum was veggie when pg with me, I and my 2 sisters have been all our lives, my sister also had 2 big healthy babies, and none of us have in any of our pgs been anaemic. I have eaten pretty badly in both my pgs due to sickness so I've been taking ferroglobin or floradix and pregnacare or solar pre natal when I remember. I did know a fellow veggie who got very short of a b vit, can't remember which, is it 6 or 12 that's hard to get from non animal sources? Anyway, it caused a severe chest pain, and taking extra vitamin B cured it. I'm over the sickness now and eating loads of lentil soup Smile

I am vegetarian, DS is 2 and is an omnivore like DH. On second pregnancy. All I really want to eat is baked potatoes and plain pasta, so the no meat thing really hasn't been an issue so far. (13 weeks) I also ate really badly in my first pregnancy and DS was born on due date at 9lb 11oz so clearly it didn't bother him.

I went veggie at 14 so never really learnt to cook meat. DS eats things like sausages and ham, and then I get chicken that is pre-chopped breast meat so all you need to do is cook it with no prep. When I was weaning him the meat counter at Waitrose was great as I could go and get one little bit of meat (without the trauma of going to a butcher!). He also eats fish, although DH doesn't so its rarely cooked at home. He loves roast dinners that my Mum/ILs cook.

DS is now obsessed by ham sandwiches or 'ham roll' as he calls them. He has a speech delay and this is the first meal he can say. So now he is having meat every day as he always asks for ham roll!

I feel very strongly that DS should be able to choose whether he wants to be a meat eater or not when he is older and for the moment it is better for his health (given that he is 2 and I am a lazy vegetarian when it comes to cooking) for us to follow the norm and raise him as a meat eater for now. I also felt like it would seem a judgement on DH if DS was raised veggie.

Our food is mostly veggie though, DH probably has meat for dinner once or twice a week at most.
