I am getting myself worked up a bit here. I am in a few high risk groups for preeclampsia: 40yrs old, first pregnancy and overweight.
I have been having headaches/migraines since Monday. Had a midwife appointment today and for the first time my blood pressure was very high and I had a trace of protein in my urine.

I also feel very sick and have done for a few days.

I am a single parent, going through a divorce (don't live with DP/baby's father) I can't end up in hospital, especially not for the rest of this pregnancy, it would be a logistical nightmare.

Oh bums Hmm

Another midwife is checking my BP on Friday. I was told to go to hospital if I feel "peculiar"?!?! What does that mean?

I think my face is puffy too, I will get DP to assess the puffiness when he comes round later.

I need positive stories of people who have come back from the brink of pre-eclampsia, please.

Do you live alone? Anyone to help you out?
Sorry, but I don't think you can prevent pre-eclampsia. It happens or it doesn't. You can try to make sure you've got folk looking after you in case you become very ill but don't realise it.

Oh dear, it could have been a blip and you shouldn't panic over a single measurement (what was it btw?), but the reality is if it's high you have to do as you're told! (Although of they were very worried they would have sent you up today). This may mean monitoring at the hospital with bloods/scan etc and serial BP measurements. When I've been admitted (x3) it certainly wasn't convenient but I made plenty of lists of stuff for people to do for me and generally delegated!! All best for you.

I live alone (with my two dc).

It was 150/95.

I've been feeling very breathless too but that could just be anxiety. At least the midwife is coming in the morning.

Do you still have a headache?

I think I'd be erring on the side of caution with your symptoms, do you feel worse moving around? Perhaps get checked out to put your mind at rest as worrying about it isn't going to help.

lljkk · 12/09/2013 21:27

so this will be first bio child? Or did you mean first pg with this partner? How old are your DC, could they act in emergency?

EmilyHopes · 12/09/2013 22:29

When I had pre eclampsia I experienced the feeling 'peculiar' as kind of like the room spinning round and feeling light headed.

You might get taken in to be monitored, maybe just for a few hours but you might have to stay much longer. It can be very serious, as you probably are aware, so you just have to fit around whatever medical staff say I am afraid.

That reading is high, and they will want to keep an eye on it, particulaty wth the protein, but it isn't dangerously high at the moment. The aim is to definitely to keep the diastolic (bottom number) under 100 and really under 90. Top number should be under 150. So don't panic too much, it's just good that they are monitoring.

I saw the doctor today and had the same reading as you but I already have hypertension so we've agreed for me to up my meds and monitor it at home. I'm 28 weeks pregnant.

Get your DP to go and buy a BP monitor. They sell them at most pharmacies and they aren't expensive. If your diastolic goes over 100, th headache gets worse, you start seeing flashing lights or the swelling gets worse call triage/maternity assessment.

Get yourself educated by reading the NICE guidelines

Thanks. First bio dc, yes. My dc are 7 and 5 so quite dependent.

The thing is I have a history of migraines with visual disturbances so its tricky to know what's what.

It's not hugely high so don't panic yet, it's high but not super scary.

If you have headaches you need to be seen asap.

PE develops it doesn't get better but it might stay the same iirc.

Please get seen tomorrow for reassurance about the headaches and puffiness.

My bp was 156/95 but I didn't have trace of protein and mine went down on its own in a couple of days but Dr did mention giving me I think he said water tablets or something along those lines to bring it down but it never got to it in the end. Maybe check to see if you can have something to control it if it gets any worse x
