Listeriosis in vegetarian pate?!

Well shit. I got some vegetarian pate and thought "great, there's no liver in it, I can eat it". Didn't think to look it up until now and I've seen that it still contains listeria. What do I do?

Title should say "listeria in vegetarian pate?"

It probably doesn't contain listeria as food factories have higj hygiene standards - if it did have listeria then lots of people would be sick but it is on the higher risk list according to the NHS

If you've eaten it and feel fine then no need to worry. If you've eaten it and then get food poisoning symptoms see your MW or doctor as a matter of urgency. If you've not eaten it then it is up to you whether to eat or feed to someone else

It doesn't contain listeria. It's not an ingredient. Pâté, whether with liver or not, and soft cheese can cause listeria if the bacteria happens to be present in the product. The liver thing is because of excess vitamin A so sort of two separate things.

Thank you LostMySocks.

I know what listeria is, rocky. I don't understand your comments though, what do you mean by saying it doesn't contain listeria and then saying all pate does? If all pate has listeria then so does the one I ate.

It doesn't all have it in. It's quite rare - 147 cases in 2011.

DaleyBump · 11/09/2013 18:41

That makes me feel better, thank you :)

Pate may cause listeria food poisoning if the bacteria happen to be in the product. Rocky didn't say all pate contains listeria, she said that all types of pate may cause listeria if they happen to harbour the bacteria. The vast majority of all pate will not.

The reason for avoiding liver, as I am sure you already know, is high levels of vitamin A. So there are two separate reasons.

Also worth bearing in mind that very few listeria outbreaks are actually caused by pate. It seems to be a fairly random avoid list TBH with little scientific basis. As far as I recall, one particularly nasty outbreak was linked to pre-bagged lettuce. And another in the US a couple of years back to melons.

The pate you ate didn't cause listeria - you would know. You would be heaving your guts up and cramping.
