Skin rash in early pregnancy

I'm 8 weeks pregnant, and have woken up this morning with a strange rash. It's distributed equally equally on opposite sides of my body: under my chin, tops of both shoulders, backs of boths arms, backs of both legs, hips, thighs, and bottom. Some areas of my body are unaffected ie. none on my lower legs, tummy, chest, back or face. The rash consists of red blotches which form raised red lumps in areas where there are a lot of them. It's slightly itchy, but doesn't really bother me.

It isn't chicken pox or rubella (I had the first very badly as a child, and have been vaccinated against the second) - I feel fine in myself. It looks like an allergic rash, but there isn't anything I can think of that I've done/eaten differently recently. I've rung NHS Direct, but their job isn't to diagnose - they've just advised me to keep cool, not take antihistamines or use soap, and to contact my doctor.

I've read about various rashes that appear in the last trimester but obviously, something appearing so early on, I'm worried that it may affect the baby (not knowing much about allergies, but I do know a lot of histamine is released into the bloodstream to cause this reaction - can this affect a fetus?). Has anybody out there experienced anything like this?

Many thanks.

All sorts of weird things can happen in pregnancy to your skin. I only get heat rash in pregnancy.
Don't assume it isn't Rubella (sorry to say something horrible); Rubella immunity can wear off or not take at all.
Chloro-something (it's in Piriton, will make you sleepy) was considered safe when I had terrible insect bites 5 years ago when pregnant with DS.
I believe you shouldn't worry... any effect on the fetus from your body's own anti-histamines would be tiny.

Thanks for your reply Zebra. I certainly haven't had any other symptoms associated with rubella, and I don't think the rash is typical either (there are a few blotches which have come up round my eyes this morning, but none elsewhere on my face), and the rest of the rash is only on certain parts of my body. I haven't had a fever or swollen glands or anything. From what I can recall my blood test for rubella came back positive for antigens in my last pregnancy. My concern is more for the effects of histmaine, so I'm reassured that the effects would be minimal (I've spoken to the on-calll midwife this morning, who said the same thing). I have a scan booked at 12 weeks, so will have to keep my fingers crossed until then.

Pregnancy is a b*tch. If this is the worse symptom you get, it will be a very easy ride!

I wouldn't rule out chicken pox either. Are the raised spots filled with waterlike fluid? If it is, mine was and only concentrated in some areas and itchy too. Little did I know it was chicken pox. I know that doesn't help, sorry, just be careful and try not to scratch.

No, the blisters aren't fluid filled. Ds had it about 15 months ago, so I'd recognise it (didn't catch it then either). I also had it really badly as a child - plastered in spots, and quite sick with it - so would hope I still have adequate immunity. My rash isn't really itchy at all - it looks like an allergic reaction. Got a doctor's appointment in half an hour, so must dash!

hope it is nothing to worry about but can soothe away in a bath.

Well, just got back from the doctor's, who took one look at it and said 'urticarial rash'. It must be a reaction to something I ate yesterday (either grapefruit or chorizo sausage, both of which I've had before, so somewhat puzzled), but relieved that it's nothing infectious. I now have chronic indigestion from worrying so much......
