Hi ladies I'm about 8 nearly 9 weeks I can't cope I've had really awful sickness for four weeks, I went to see the midwife yesterday and I did a urine sample it was high in keystones. She said i need to drink morning or I will end up having to go on a drip. I've tried to drink more but I drink one cup of water and I will throw up two :( I'm exhausted and my throat is hurting from vomiting. I could handle sickness if I didn't feel nauseous 24/7 . The midwife said I could take some tablets and I don't even have to see doctor I could ask midwife.
Has any one took tablets how do they work. I'm fighting a losing battle with this sickness I know I'm not ill but I have never felt so awful in my life any advice much needed :) xx

It sounds like you might have HG. You should see your GP asap to help manage it with medication or if you are very dehydrated go to hospital. I'm not sure the midwife should have left you with ketones showing up! It sounds awful sorry you're feeling this way :(

Sarahmains40 · 10/09/2013 19:31

Poor you. No one prepares you for how terrible pregnancy sickness is. Try to get emergency GP app tomorrow. Hope they help you!

EmB1715 · 11/09/2013 20:17

How did you get on?

Sarahmains40 · 11/09/2013 20:27

Couldn't get in to the docs got an appointment tomorrow. Also got a phone call today of docs saying I need to go bk for a second blood test something with my thyroid so I am slightly worried now. Hopefully get in tomorrow. Pain in the back side my docs stuck in a queue for ages for them to tell you try again tomorrow and there's no pre book able appointments. So frustrating lol

Oh Sarah, I'm sorry things have got so shitty for you, I have been reading your posts about sickness. I hit the wall after just 4 days if sickness, never mind 4 weeks, awful. You must feel drained, exhausted and want to curl up and hide from the world!! I really hope the GP helps tomorrow - I don't know exactly how anti I sickness tablets work but there are a variety you could try. Make sure you tell your GP about your urine because the fact that it smells so strong is a good indication you are dehydrated, as do the ketones on your urine. I hope you don't end up in hospital on a drip, but saying that, it will probably make you feel so much better and you will be grateful for it. If you can't get an appointment tomorrow just go to A&E. x x

marzipanned · 11/09/2013 21:44

Sarah it does sound like HG.

The doctor will probably prescribe cyclizine - that's usually the first port of call. For me it's been really effective, but for some other women it's not much good and they need something else (ondanestron is one, can't remember the names of the others I'm afraid).

All the GPs I've seen have been incredibly understanding but apparently some are very unwilling to prescribe meds. If that's the case then do point out the dehydration issue.

If the pills don't work, don't go to A&E because you will just sit there feeling miserable, call your EPU and get admitted directly. Agree that your midwife should probably have sent you straight there for rehydration!

Oh, and do NOT say that you're not ill. You are! I have never in my life felt as awful as I did for the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. When you are vomiting 20+ times a day; when your stomach is agony because you can't eat or drink but are thirsty and ravenous; when you are losing weight and you're supposed to be gaining it... YOU ARE ILL!

Nothing to be ashamed of - good luck getting it treated.

everythinghippie29 · 11/09/2013 22:03

Oh sweetheart, I really do feel for you. I was like this from 4 weeks and went in hospital with Hyperemesis at about 8 weeks and becoming very dehydrated. It truly is awful so I hope you feel better soon. Thanks

After I came out of hospital I was taking multi vitamins with B6, Cyclizine and Metaclopromide(sp) up to 14 weeks and it really did make a world of difference. They meant I was able to eat and drink again. I still had nausea and was sick on occasion (usually associated with smells, because EVERYTHING smelled terrible!) but it really helped.

I was anxious about taking them but the stress of no food/ sleep/ dehydration will be far worse for you and your baby. Give them a try andsee how you get on. They were my life saver and now at 28 weeks with a healthy baby boy now.

Good luck and feel better soon. Check out the Hyperemesis support thread in here too, very nice people who offer good advice and support. Try and avoid the urge to jab people who say 'have you tried ginger' in the throat...the 6 millionth person to say it to is probably trying to help but it certainly grated on me a few weeks in!Grin

Take care. xxx

elcranko · 11/09/2013 23:24

Definitely go to hospital if you can't keep anything down. While I was in hospital I was given anti sickness meds via injection (fab, as I was throwing tablets straight back up!) and put on a drip to rehydrate me. You will feel a million times better upon discharge from hospital, honestly.

The tablets for me just took the edge off slightly but didn't help to control it much until about week 20. Hope they work better for you though, I was just unlucky. I was in and out of hospital for the first 20 weeks but I was waiting till I was really dehydrated before going back. Don't do this, if you're vomiting constantly after leaving hospital just go straight back.

Don't worry about work. As a pp said, you are ILL. If it means that you need to be signed off for much of your pregnancy then so be it! Stay in bed, take your meds on time and eat & drink anything that you can.

Hope you're feeling better soon x

Sarahmains40 · 12/09/2013 10:08

Thanks for all your adivce ladies I'm feeling hopeless today but I have got an appointment at 2.45 for doctor today. The morning water I drink I seem to throw double up. I've tried eating little and often I have never ever felt like this before. Fingers crossed the doctor can help me. I'm feeling really exhausted and sorry for myself lol :(

If worse comes to worse and I have to go on a drip which I really hope I don't how long do you stay on a drip

OP posts:
Writerwannabe83 · 12/09/2013 10:26

The Drip will be your friend!!
Think of it as an extreme positive!!
Plead for a Drip!!!!

You will feel so, so, so, much better for it!!!!

If you do need that level of treatment then its longevity would depend on how dehydrated you are and how long it takes them to control your sickness and get your electrolyte levels corrected. I'd probably expect to be in hospital for a few days maybe??

Sarahmains40 · 12/09/2013 10:38

I hope it doesn't come to that I have a massive phobia of hosiptals lol I know I'm pregnant going to have to get use to it. Whilst typing drinking water lol

Feel a bit better got a docs appointment this afternoon. Thanks sorry for all the mass posts on sickness lol

Writerwannabe83 · 12/09/2013 10:43

Have you thought about drinking some dioralyte?

Mind you, are pregnant women even allowed that?

Sarahmains40 · 12/09/2013 10:52

Yes I am going to ask the doctor about it my friend was in the same boat as me and she wasn't allowed to take tablets (allergic to something in tablet) so she used dioralyte sachets she said they did help a little so will ask doctor today

elcranko · 12/09/2013 11:36

I was spending about 2 days in hospital each time. You'll feel so much better in hospital once you get some anti sickness meds and the drip starts to take effect. You'll be able to keep some food down and can lay around reading magazines, the time will fly honestly!

Hope your appointment goes well today x

HumphreyCobbler · 12/09/2013 11:42

www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/

Have a look at treatment options on this site before you visit your doctor. If you get one that doesn't have a clue about HG (hopefully this will not be the case) you will then have the relevant information to give to them

Best of luck. There is help out there, it is vile.

marzipanned · 12/09/2013 12:18

I'm really needle phobic and hated having the drip in, but it was definitely for the best!! I was in for just under 24 hours. It was bloody miserable but...yes...being able to eat and keep water down was amazing.

If you are managing to eat, try for foods with high water content e.g. cucumber.

Sarahmains40 · 12/09/2013 16:08

Hi ladies back from the docs she was so lovely and has give me a months supply of cyclizine so even if it takes the edge off, I just want to feel human again. Making sure I drink lots

OP posts:
marzipanned · 12/09/2013 16:16

Brilliant. If possible try to take it after you've just been sick or at a moment when your stomach feels a bit more settled so it doesn't come right back up again!

Sarahmains40 · 12/09/2013 17:28

Thanks Hun ill give it a go x

Hey Sarah, just wanted to see if you were feeling any better today? x

Sarahmains40 · 13/09/2013 13:30

Hi yes feeling loads better was sick after some toast this morning waited a bit then had summit else to eat and took the tablet. I even managed a small shop around tesco and put some ribs in the slow cooker for my hubby's tea. (Fisrt time I've touched raw meat for 5 weeks. I feel a bit drowsy and light headed and the sickness is still there slightly but not as bad as it was, and only been sick once today so I'm feeling positve. Wish I'd went to the docs weeks ago lol

Feeling a bit more positve now :) thanks for asking

OP posts:
marzipanned · 13/09/2013 14:05

Oh that's great. It makes me really drowsy too, I was sleeping about 16 hours a day at one point, but I figure any time you're asleep is a time you're not feeling sick! :)
