i guess they are just checking that you haven't got diabetes.
the gtt test is fine.they usually schedule it for early am.they ask you not to eat after 12 the night before.make you drink a very sweet drink and then wait an hour(?) and repeat the blood test.
a lot of waiting around .
if they find you do have it they will just monitor you more i imagine.

Depends if the GTT comes back outside normal range. How pregnant are you?

I had to go visit the diabetic clinic every fortnight for the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy with DS2. They just checked urine/blood sugar levels. I guess mine was borderline and stable. I had to watch what I ate (in thoery) but if you don't control your sugar levels you may need insulin. You can end up with a larger-than-normal baby too and your baby may have low blood sugar after being born meaning they need to be fed lots.

Of course, you may need nothing if you "pass" the GTT.

if your blood sugar is high you may have gestational diabetes. ur blood sugars would be monitored throughout the rest of ur pregancy. It goes away after birth. I aslo has a high blood sugar but on the re test it was normal. Could have depended if you had eaten someting high in sugar. In my case i had eaten toast and jam

I jhad to be retested 6 weeks after the birth to check it had gone back to normal (which it had). And oddly enough, I had no problems with my 3rd pregnancy.

Lisa, my dad was diagnosed with diet controlled diabetes shortly after I had DS2 so clearly there was a genetic tendancy there. Having GD (gestational Diabetes) means it is more likely for you to develop diabetes in later life but I think this is because the genetic tendancy was already there rather than being caused by pregnancy IYSWIM.

i was fine with my first pregnancy but i am now 20 weeks and its been nothing but problems i have had alot of bleeding .i didnt eat anything on the morning of the bloodtest so i dont think its that.

thanks, what do u have to do if you have got the gestational diabets?

It depends how bad it is. I just had to watch what I ate (a low GI diet) and I was fine. Some (Misdee? Hunkermunker?) had to test their blood sugar every day and some needed insulin. There's no way of telling what will happen and it can change throughout your pregnancy.

lisalewis · 21/06/2006 10:36

thanks at least i know sort of what to expect,i had a big baby frist time around and i have heard if u have it it can cause big babys is this true?

Yes, it is true Something to do with the amount of sugar they get I think.

However, DS1 ("passed" GTT) was 10lb 1oz and DS2 ("failed" GTT) was 8lb 4oz and DD (no problems) was 8lb 10oz. Make of that what you will! I think Hunkermunkers latest was a "normal" size.

Seona1973 · 21/06/2006 14:38

I had GD and had to test my blood sugar several times a day. Luckily mine was diet controlled and I didnt need to use insulin. DD was born 7lb 11oz so not too big at all.
