Paranoid as people keep saying I'm too small?..

I know it's the opposite to most complaints on here but I am getting very paranoid as everyone is saying I look too small! (Often 3/4 times a day!) I am 35+1 and admit I don't look vast - in fact I felt bigger earlier on in pregnancy...just a bit worried as too small is actually worse than too big for the baby?! I have had the other extreme during 2nd trimester so know people aren't suddenly being polite - bearing in mind commenting insensitively to pregnant women appears to be a nationwide hobby! I am normal size 10 and 5'6" in RL so should be standard pregnancy size. My belly measurement from midwife on last visit was 1cm under sized but that was a few weeks ago...can still feel movement so sure DC is still in there but I am a bit concerned. Last scan at 30wk the consultant advised that baby would be 7lb2 when born so size was ok then (3lb something at the time).

Please reassure me that everything is ok!

P.s - my size is not prohibiting me from doing anything...no waddling or discomfort and I walked the dogs for 2 hours today with ease...after seeing and hearing so many horror stories of inability to do anything this increases my concerns that I am not normal!!!!

Oops - just realised I'm 36+1 which I guess is even worse...

I too am 35+1. I get varying comments from people/family from "you're the biggest pregnant person I've ever seen" to "I can't believe you've just 5 weeks to go". Hmm

I think there is something about pregnancy that people feel they have to comment. I measure 30 weeks at 32 weeks.

I would say, if you mw/gp etc are not concerned then you shouldn't be. 7lb 2 is a perfect weight.

Fairypants · 09/09/2013 22:54

I had this a lot with dd1 who was 6lb 11oz born at 39weeks. I think some bumps just look less spread out than others which I think makes people think they are smaller.
Your mw is the expert here so you can trust her judgement. A week or 2 either way on measurements doesn't mean that much because there is so much variation in fluid and muscle etc.

MrsGSR · 09/09/2013 22:56

My mums friends was tiny at full term. Her son was 9lb something and is now 6 foot 5 and at uni! If you're midwife isn't worried its fine :)

eggsnbeans · 10/09/2013 04:14

I don't know why people feel the need to comment on the size of a pregnant lady ay Smile I had this throughout pregnancy, everyone kept telling me what a tiny baby I was going to have and bought newborn and prem clothes, measured slightly small to bang on for dates and DD she was 9lb! I also know ladies who have been huge and had under 6 lbers So don't worry at all Grin Just one of those annoying things you have to grin and bear!

StillPukin · 10/09/2013 09:05

eggsnbeans I was just going to write exactly what you said - why on earth do people think its ok to comment on somebody's size. I had it all the way through my first pregnancy, things from 'you can harldy tell' to 'it just looks like you've swallowed a malteser' and I felt huge! So I was very pleased when DS arrived and he was 7lb4oz, a normal healthy size.
I think so long as the medical experts think its ok then everything is fine - they are the only ones who can tell if things are normal or not.
Just be glad that you arent weighed down with a huge bump and enjoy your ability to still move normally x

LadyFlumpalot · 10/09/2013 09:12

I'm 39 weeks today and my bump is measuring at 32. Was exactly the same with my 8lb son.

Have been for numerous growth scans this time round too and they just say DC2 is within normal parameters.

Conversely a friend who measured ahead consistently and carried to 40 weeks has just had a diddy 5lber.

You'll be fine.

ElleCloughie · 10/09/2013 09:20

I have the same thing, nice to know I'm not alone! I have measured small with my midwife all the way through but extra scans have showed that little one is perfectly proportioned, and within the normal range. She does like to lie in odd positions which doesn't help! I'm just taking comfort in the fact that I am unlikely to be trying to pop out a ten pounder in three and a half weeks. Just hoping she decides to stay head down now that she has finally got there.

ithaka · 10/09/2013 09:25

I was small with my first - I am very slim anyway & I really didn't need maternity clothes, just rolled things under my bump. My daughter was 7lbs something, so totally normal healthy weight. She is now a leggy 16 year old who towers over me.

I think if you are fit to begin with, with good muscle tone it keeps everything in. I was never that big with any of my pregnancies, but then I never stopped horseriding. My sister took to the sofa & was huge. We both had healthy children - 'normal' is a wide variation.

CuteLittleToes · 10/09/2013 11:06

Next time someone comments on your bump, just make an innocent face and say "Oh, didn't know you are a midwife!"

SomethingOnce · 10/09/2013 11:41

People are just making conversation and either don't realise or have forgotten how sensitive pregnant women are about anything that might possibly imply the baby could be anything less than 100% ok - try not to take it to heart Smile

I'm 5'10" with a big pelvis, long torso and (formerly) strong abs, so I got the small bump thing a lot but DD was a perfectly respectable nearly 7lbs.

If your consultant's happy and baby is busy then just keep going to your appointments and try not to worry too much.

PurplePoppySeed · 10/09/2013 11:51

Another one here. I'm 5'10" bump has been small all the way along. I'm 39+6 by my dates, 38+6 by my 8 weeks scan which is pretty inaccurate and they haven't redated me since!

Baby has been head down since 28 weeks and I have a anterior placenta, so both reasons to look smaller, but people still look at me odd when I say I'm due next week!

I was like you OP until the last couple of weeks, so now I still look small, but feel awful and waddle (4/5 engaged).

Don't worry and ignore comments, some of us just carry the baby inside rather than outside! Which for me hasn't helped breathing /acid /twisting /bending etc etc!

PurplePoppySeed · 10/09/2013 11:53

Ps I measured 33cm at 35 weeks and 34cm at 37 weeks. Now I'm up to about 37/38 - it happened pretty suddenly this week, so the same might happen to you xx

SomethingOnce · 10/09/2013 12:02

Whatever your skin type, surely a neater bump will result in fewer stretch marks than a bigger one would. So I suppose that's a plus!

crazykat · 10/09/2013 12:06

I had a small bump with DD1 and she was 6lb 8oz when she was born. I wouldn't worry too much as long as you can still feel movement.

What does your midwife say? Could you ring her and ask to be checked to put your mind at rest?

candr · 10/09/2013 13:15

Am same as you but am expecting small baby. DS1 was5.3lb but there are some problems with this one and is really getting on my nerves people saying how tiny I am - I Know! Wish I was a bit bigger though as hurts like hell when he rolls around.

WhiteMagnolia · 10/09/2013 16:56

Seeing the midwife on Thursday so will try and get reassurance then....it just worries you when people ask if everything is ok as you are so small..you start questioning it yourself - particularly when you haven't seen any medical peeps for a few weeks...thank you for all your feedback - sounds like I am not the only one...probably will have people accusing me of being a heffalump tomorrow....one things for sure this 1st pregnancy had taught me not to comment either way on peoples size - not that I did before anyway - if you wouldn't say something in RL then definitely don't say it to a pregnant person - they are likely to be more sensitive or at least there will be more implications!!

I am the same, but my baby is actually small, weekly scans confirm this and am having an ELCS next week at 37 weeks as its only 4 pounds.

People are well meaning I think pointing out that I'm small, I am, but it makes me feel so guilty that am not bigger. Am eating and doing everything I should, but my placenta is rubbish Hmm

cathpip · 10/09/2013 17:05

Don't worry every one kept commenting to my twin sister on how small she was considering that I was the size of a house when pregnant, she measured 4cm under from around 35 weeks and had a 7.9 lb baby. :)

SummerSevern · 10/09/2013 17:18

I had this right the way through from people. I even brought some teenie tiny newborn clothes because I thought she would be tiny. But dd was 7lb5, more or less exactly 'average' in terms of percentiles.
I just count myself lucky. No stretch marks and I was still pretty mobile at the end.
