Egg shaped belly when getting up/lying down

I've noticed this since I was about 10 weeks, that when I lay down or get up, my tummy goes a weird egg type shape, a bit pointy/rounded at the belly button...just out of curiosity, dows anyone else have this too? I'm 27 weeks now and it's still the same type of shape, a bit like the Coneheads! Is it just the shape of the uterus when my stomach is being tensed? As soon as I am laying down it flattens out again...

I noticed this last night, not noticed before, made to smile lol x I'm 24+3

dingit · 09/09/2013 19:30

Try not to do it too much, wrecks your tummy muscles IMO.

DaleyBump · 09/09/2013 19:31

Yup, makes my belly button pop out Grin

dingit sitting up wrecks your stomach muscles? Hmm

roofio87 · 09/09/2013 19:41

antenatal yoga lady says its called 'doming' and is your tummy muscles seperating to accommodate your expanding uterus. should go back to normal aftet birth but some women do have problems. I have it too!!

chocolatemartini · 09/09/2013 19:49

Yes it's separated stomach muscles. My midwife with ds1 was adamant I shouldn't let it go egg shaped and if I did they'd separate more and not go back. I was more careful after that, muscles went back ok and if anyone's don't apparently you need this book (so several mumsnetters told me when I was stressing about it Blush)

feekerry · 09/09/2013 20:19

omg ihate this. happens to me too! freaks me out.
i always thought the pointy bit was the actual baby??!!
i roll around to get up now as i hate seeing it!

MummyJetsetter · 09/09/2013 22:44

Yep it's yucky! x

SeriousStuff · 09/09/2013 23:17

Yup, I have this - as many posts above state, it's when your stomach muscles have separated. I try not to use them at all now for fear I'll strain them and they won't go back after the birth!

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 09/09/2013 23:20

Yep, what everyone had said above, my MW told me its when your muscles are starting to separate. Either get someone to help you up, or roll onto your side and push yourself up.

CrispyFB · 09/09/2013 23:45

It's bad news as has been said - means your stomach muscles have separated. Look up "diastasis recti". I have it, and it means when I'm not pregnant I have a gap of several finger widths in my abdominal wall. The end result of which is I always look a few months pregnant, even worse after a big meal or if I'm bloated.

There are exercises that can usually fix it postnatally (see the Tupler Technique), but in the meantime avoid that action if you can!

I'm 11 weeks and it's clearly visible Stupid tummy.

Fakebook · 10/09/2013 04:01

I get this too! I already have separated muscles from my previous two births. You should do the exercises they suggest to you after birth to knit them back together. I got lazy and never bothered.

MissRatty · 10/09/2013 07:48

Oh gosh, mine appeared before I was even showing properly. I can't feel that the muscles have separated as yet...is it just the beginning (baring in mind i've had it for 17 weeks!).

Noticed mine around 20 weeks and it hasn't worsened that much since then. Your muscles will go back (some women's go back completely), but as said above, if there's still a gap a few months after birth, there are exercises you can do. Don't worry about it - all part of your body's way of making room for your new baby!

MamaTo3Boys · 10/09/2013 07:53

Mine went like a camels hump when getting up/sitting down etc all 3 times ive been pregnant, and also when I was in labour haha. It sucked in at the sides and stuck out down the middle
