Hi! Im not pregnant but this discussion came up at work. I work in a busy restaurant/hotel(front of house) I also do most of the housekeeping, so i could work 60+ hrs a week. And we were discussing what i couldnt/shouldn't do when and if i become pregnant. And i was wondering what they were. We have a celler and i know i can't go down them when im 7 months. Plus i know i shouldn't handle chemicals.

At work you generally will need to avoid heavy lifting, things with a high risk of falling and chemicals. So less of the housekeeping and more of the front of house.

And safety aside, you are unlikely to be able to work a 60 hour week even in the first trimester. You might be lucky but a lot of women start being constantly exhausted from about 6 weeks.

This would all be decided through a risk assessment which your employer would need to do once you have told them you are pregnant. It would consider things such as manual handling including heavy lifting, lone working, stress and work load, access to chemicals, cleaners etc Ultimately this would be personal to you and to your job role. If the risk assessment found you could not do your job, your employer is obliged to find you another role. If another role is not available you would not be able to work but would still be paid (although this is fairly unusual as mostly another role or adjusted duties would be put in place).

Aww!! I thought this thread was going to be about some strange secret etiquette that pregnant women needed to abide by when staying at hotels. I am slightly disappointed!! lol :)

What's the deal with cellars?!

sabrina1989 · 09/09/2013 18:40

Great thanks! With cellers if i fall down them i could harm the baby as the steps are made of stone (thats what i was told though)

Haha! That would have made an interesting discussion!

Same here BearHunt. Images of sneaking to the hotel kitchen to feed cravings, stealing bathrobes as they are the only thing that fit anymore etc. Oh well.

Ah, ok, I thought there might be a problem with cellars... I dunno, like vapours or spores!
