I currently have really bad sickness. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I was determined to change my diet and eat uber healthy, all I can mange is bread crisps crackers just utter carbs that are making me feel yuk. I love bananas and apples oranges plus other fruits but every time I eat them they give me really bad indigotin and sick. I've started drinking apple juice and eating tinned pineapples in there own juice I'm worried that's theses a loaded with sugar but do they have nutritional value. As soon as this sickness has passed I can't wait to eat normal again.

Avoid the pineapples, they can cause miscarriage (albeit in vast quantities - like a gazillion fresh pineapples, but best to err on the side of caution).

Eat whatever you can hold down, it might not be the healthiest of foods, but better to have something in your tummy than nothing at all :)

p.s congratulations!

I think you'll be fine with a tin of pineapples. In order to stimulate your uterus into contracting (to start labour) you have to eat about 18 or something. So don't worry.

Also, in your first trimester just eat whatever you can (except pâté/Brie etc!). The baby takes the nutrients it needs from your stores, so focus on getting enough fluid (particularly if you're being sick), and keeping your iron levels up (so leafy veg and OJ with meals and reduced caffeine).

Lots of women get through their first trimester on hula hoops alone. Just do your best.

Congratulations!

I has so many good intentions of being super healthy during my pregnancy but for 6 weeks at the beginning, I had terrible nausea and went for a while only being able to eat breaded/battered foods, bread, mashed potatoes and salt and vinegar crisps. I couldn't even stomach water and could only drink really sweet and sour drinks i.e. a mix of lime cordial, orange juice and lemonade!

The baby will take the best nutrients available from what you eat. But I have taken Pregnacare supplements throughout too just in case I'm lacking in anything.

Also, don't worry about the pineapples, you would have to eat a LOT for them to take any effect - just ask anyone who's gone over their due date and tried eating pineapples to induce labour! It almost never works.

I've never heard that pineapple causes miscarriage.

I know there are old wifes tales about pineapple triggering labour.

Just eat as well as you can.

Don't even go there... 6 weeks and 3 days in and omg I'm seriously not coping with nausea. I have pills from my doctor who informed me she took them in her pregnancy. But they don't eliminate entirely, enough to stand a drink throughout the day! I've got anti sickness bands too which I feel are useless. Just eat what you can. I have a freezer packed with veg rice and fruit that I planned to eat everyday- I can't even stomach pizza ATM!!! But bread, chicken Kiev, beans and potato waffles I can deal with!! See your doctor if its bad, I believe the stress from dealing with it all is more than what is in the pills I'm taking

The enzyme bromelain in fresh pineapple is supposed to be what does the job - the canning process breaks it down so don't worry about it.

rallytog1 · 08/09/2013 05:42

There's no research that says tinned pineapple can cause miscarriage - maybe a bit less of the scare-mongering Karma?

KatAndKit · 08/09/2013 10:09

Pineapple absolutely does not cause miscarriage. The overwhelming majority of miscarriages are caused by a genetic defect.
if you were near your due date and ate a ton of pineapple some people believe it might help get things going, but a bit like the curry and sex theory, only works when things are ready to go anyway.

you are not going to harm your baby by eating fruit. Craving carbs is normal, just eat whatever you can manage

Please don't worry about tinned pineapples. (That's really stupid advice to give someone without any proof to back it up). I lived on them at the start of this pregnancy and my first and everything was fine with dd and everything is fine with this baby too.

Don't worry about nutrition if you're feeling sick. Just eat the things your body is asking for. I lived on naan bread from our local kebab shop and tinned fruit for about 10 weeks and then only ate chicken burgers and chips and kfc after that until week 15 :).

For 12 weeks all I could eat were crumpets, oatcakes and Wotsits. I was absolutely astonished to see my baby on the scan, wiggling around and apparently suffering no side affects at all. Just do what you can and make sure that, once your stomach settles you eat lots of nutrient-rich food to boost your own stores up.
