Hi.
This is my first pregnancy. I'm 23 weeks and have already gained a stone. I'm 5'2" and just been told by consultant that I should not put on any more weight and need to watch what I eat. Help as I'm now really worried that I'm going to be massive. What weight gain is normal? I've read lots online and I'm really confused.
Any info v welcome...

Well I'm in the same boat as you then! 24 Wks 5.2" and I've nearly put on a stone. I'm not really that worried though Grinxx

JulietBravo81 · 06/09/2013 19:05

I'm 24 weeks, 5'2 and have gained two stone!! I'm feeling horrible and out of control because I was so fit and toned before... I did a marathon at 6 weeks pregnant! I have been eating more than normal but not really crazy with takeaways all the time etc and I've been going to the gym 3/4 times a week...
I feel even worse now reading about what your consultant said!!

FraggleRock77 · 06/09/2013 19:09

I wouldn't worry Juliet. As long as you're healthy i think it is ok. We are all different i suppose Grin

JulietBravo81 · 06/09/2013 19:13

Thank u! I'm trying to not get all obsessive about it but I'm already planning my diet and fitness regime for January!!

Sarahmains40 · 06/09/2013 19:16

Hi I'm 5 ft 2 and I'm already pretty big I'm only 8 weeks preg I weigh about 12 stone 6 I am determined not to put any weight on and midwife said no more than 7 pounds although I am overweight I'm healthy and active and I plan to go swimming and walk that little extra. How much do you weigh now try not to let it ruin your pregnancy

LittlePeaPod · 06/09/2013 19:16

Hi Op

Everyone is different. I would worry too much. I am 23+1 and I have gained 8lb but I was really sick early on and I carried on going to the gym. I have been using the following pregnancy weight gain tracker to monitor my weight gain..

pregnancy.familyeducation.com/second-trimester/22-weeks-7-days.html

LittlePeaPod · 06/09/2013 19:18

That should be wouldnt worry to much

MunchkinJess · 06/09/2013 19:19

im 34 weeks and put on 2 stones and 2lbs..im 5ft3.. im stressing about how much I have put on..this is also my first. ....having said that I have never been weighed at any of my midwife appointments other than the first one and no one has told me if I've put on too much or not.. my midwife just keeps telling me im looking really well.

JulietBravo81 · 06/09/2013 19:21

I was 8 and a half stone when I got pregnant now 24 weeks later 10 and a half...

Adviceisfree · 06/09/2013 19:24

Everything I have read says that you should gain on average 4lbs in your first trimester then on average a lb to lb.5 each week in the second trimester and then about 2-3 a week in the third.

That means that you are spot on - 4lbs plus 10lbs for the 10 weeks you have been in your second trimester.

Do you have a medical condition that may mean gaining too much weight is dangerous or were you largely over weight at the point of becoming pregnant??

That's just my 2ps worth, I am a neurotic first timer as well!!!

LittleMilla · 06/09/2013 19:25

Ignore them!

I had my ds2 7 weeks ago. Put on 3 stone I think and I'm already back to within 10lb of my pre pg weight. I too am short and normally weigh a about 8st 10lb?

Also, when I got pg this time I was the lightest I've been since I was a teenager and I'm now 32. This is my second.

Everyone puts on weight at different rates in pg. I was pretty reckless (for me) throughout but was still ok. You know your body - and how easily you gain/lose weight - so just be sensible.

Ls271082 · 06/09/2013 19:34

I'm 38 weeks, 5'2 and put on 2 stone 3lbs, read 2 stone is average. Feel bit crap about it, thinking that maybe stone is baby fluid etc so I'll have a stone to lose. I have been eating what I've wanted so can't complain really! X

CuteLittleToes · 06/09/2013 22:00

29 weeks here, so far about 1st 9lbs. Was gaining weight pretty slowly until about 20 weeks, and then it really accelerated.

I'm a bit surprised they told not to put any more weight, I thought average recommended is about 2st? I was never weighted at any appointments, only at booking in to get BMI I guess...

101twinkles · 07/09/2013 22:30

It's soo confusing isn't it? Thanks everyone. I totally think the consultant was wrong. There is a book the NHS used to give out to new mums that my friend has given me and it says about 2 stone is average. I have been eating what I want within reason but am just gonna go with it and not worry too much. It seems we're all different and know our own bodies so just do what feels right and make sensible food choices. Admit that I haven't been great at exercising. Try not at all really. Am still constantly tired tho. Am starting yoga next week so looking forward to that.
Ls271082 seems like you're perfectly within the weight gain range.
Am seeing the doctor on Monday so will see what she says too.

Thanks again ladies and good luck to you all. Xx

Try not to stress about it too much. As long as you are eating reasonably healthily, you'll be fine. I put on 5 (yes, count 'em!) stone in my first pregnancy Blush. However, I lost it within 6 months. I've since had two more babies and put on a significant amount in each pregnancy (although I stayed away from the scales - I don't speak kilos, so hospital weigh-ins mean nothing Grin). I also lost it again each time. Was just enjoying my skinny jeans again when I had a little accident and am now 22-ish weeks with DC4. Am somewhat disappointed at the rapidly increasing lardiness of my ass, but I know I will lose it again, so hey ho. When you gotta eat, you gotta eat Grin

101twinkles · 09/09/2013 09:15

Good luck to you Sleepthief. Congrats on DC 4. Brill news. I appreciate your philosophy. Am going to ear healthily (mostly) and just go with it. Sometimes I just need to eat ha ha. Xx

I wish people would say how much they weigh. If you are told not to gain any more than a stone, then you must be obese to start with right?

I am 26 weeks and have refused to be weighed since my booking in appointment where I was 48k. I know Ive porked it on though as my clothes are tight. Even my feet are bigger.

Im going to get straight on a juice diet when the baby is born (or maybe low carb) and try to avoid mirrors until then.

101twinkles · 10/09/2013 20:23

I weighed 54kg before I got pregnant. An average size 10 so not obese at all. Now I have gained a stone. It's mostly on my belly tho. Don't seem to have gained much weight elsewhere although my trousers are tighter where my pelvis has widened. Other than that I feel fine and am going to go with the flow. Good luck Strokey. Am not even thinking about dieting yet. Am trying to drink lots full fat milk ( have IBS which is now compleltey gone during pregnancy) and be healthy. That's the best thing. Enjoy and worry about dieting later. Xx

Only eat extra if you feel you want to. Your body doesn't actually require any extra calories to grow a healthy baby. People but into that myth because the idea of 9 months of "all-you-can-eat" is so tempting! Beware, you will have to lose it at the other side...

LittleMilla · 10/09/2013 20:46

101 - we sound pretty similar tbh and I too devoured full fat milk every day - love the stuff. Also figured it was good for me and the baby Grin.

Both my boys have been a good weight - 8lb 5 and this one was 8lb 9. Decided that it's all down to milk drinking when pg!

101twinkles · 01/10/2013 21:36

I have now given up weighing myself. Feeling good so all ok. Not eating that much extra in terms of calories but keeping balanced diet so fingers crossed it goes after bump arrives.
