So I no pate is a no no! but is paste, like Chicken and ham paste classed as a pate?

Also.. its advised not to eat nuts. Well I have some hazelnut chocolate spread, is this ok to eat? I can't find anything online that says I can't.

I'm not sure about paste, sorry, but my MW said at my booking in appointment that the advice in relation to nuts had changed since I had my DD. Apparently it is ok to eat nuts in moderation and they only advise against it now if there is a history of nut allergy in your family.

greentshirt · 05/09/2013 13:18

I'm not sure about paste, I must admit it crossed my mind too as I'm into anything on toast at the moment!

I thought the nut advice was that they are fine in moderation (so don't eat the whole jar in one go!) unless there is a history of nut allergy in the family, in which case you should exercise caution

SleepingWithABrokenHeart · 05/09/2013 13:21

Well no history of a nut allergy and I only had some Chocolate spread now. I had some paste the other day but it didn't even cross my mind!

Pate is all to do with it not being cooked though right? I assume the chicken used to make the paste is thoroughly cooked etc. Not much help.but that woupd be my thought process... :/

PassTheCremeEggs · 05/09/2013 13:36

There are two reasons you can't eat pâté - one is that it is undercooked and therefore at risk of listeria, and the second is that most meat pâté is liver based which has tons of vitamin A in which should be avoided in high quantities in pregnancy (hence why pregnancy multi vits don't have it in). So all in all I'd probably avoid meat paste as well.

Artesia · 05/09/2013 13:55

I'd assume it can't be a listeria risk- jars of paste are processed by sterilising, so they're as bug-free as you could get in any prepared food, though of course you need to be sensible about keeping it refrigerated and using it up quickly once the jar's opened.

Also, unlike pate, I highly doubt it's got ANY liver in it just chicken lips and aresholes

Quite fancying a meat paste sandwich now!

SleepingWithABrokenHeart · 05/09/2013 16:35

Haha, well thanks. I don't quite fancy one myself just yet so I'll try putting it off until I see my MW next week and just ask her, to be on the safe side!

Its not like I'm craving it, its just oh bought quite a few jars.

I think that nuts are definitely fine unless you have a family history of nut allergy. I ate them during first pregnancy and have been during this pregnancy also.

I think that paste is probably fine too - as others have said, I don't think it has same risks - it's not raw/rare meat so not a listeria risk. I'm not sure about the vitamin A but can't see why it would be high. I have been eating sardine and tomato paste and no obvious ill effects.

I have often wondered if vegetarian pate eg mushroom is OK or OK-ish as presumably it doesn't have risk of listeria.

Also why, if vitamin A is so bad are carrots OK? I have eaten lots of carrots! Maybe be stupid question but always wondered...

(Have sneaking suspicion that pate will rarely cause a problem if you only have it occasionally but have not tested the theory by trying it!)

MrsDibble · 05/09/2013 16:58

Ps- in first preg I went to a German GP who said everything is basically OK as long as not gone off except for alcohol and cigarettes. I didn't risk it with things like pate or blue/mouldy cheese but suspect that he was right! I did eat salami and parma ham in first pregnancy because at one stage it was all I could eat (weirdly) and no harm came to me or baby as a result.

SleepingWithABrokenHeart · 05/09/2013 17:40

MrsDibble When I looked online to see if paste was ok it said even Vegetarian pate should be avoided. I only like ham & chicken or beef paste though.
