It means your placenta is covering your cervical opening.

HavantGuard · 05/09/2013 11:23

The diagrams show the difference. There are degrees of it.

FobblyWoof · 05/09/2013 11:27

I've got an anterior placenta that entends to posterior and my sonographer described it as a C shape, however mine is at the top of my uterus. It sounds like yours is at the bottom of your uterus, so probably better described as a U shape I'm guessing. It basically means that if it doesn't move then normal birth is unlikely as the placenta will be sitting over the cervix.

Peacenquiet2 · 05/09/2013 12:32

It means the placenta is completely over internal os (internal opening

Peacenquiet2 · 05/09/2013 12:36

It means the placenta is completely over the internal os (internal opening into cervix). Usually a placenta should be attached high up but this often happens. I had one that partially covered the os but by the 32 week scan it had moved enough for normal delivery. If its completely covering the os like yours there is less chance of it miving enough as it has to be 2cm away from the os for safe delivery.
But until your scan they wont usually make any decisions about c section. Try not to worry about it and enjoy the pg x

StillPukin · 05/09/2013 12:53

I've been told exactly the same....
Have you been given any advice? I wasnt given any so I googled it and it seems most people were told.. no heavy lifting, no strenuous excerise and no sex - I rang a midwife friend who agreed with Dr Google. So you might be best making sure you take things a little easy x

Ra88 · 05/09/2013 14:59

All I was given was a leaflet, about re scan and if no change then a c section . I'm abit panicked because if I do go in early for any reason bleeding etc it will be around Christmas !

I had the same at 20 weeks, except mine was anterior. I ended up with a grade 3 major placenta previa, 4 massive hemmorages, the last resulting in an emergency section at 37 weeks after being in hospital 3 weeks. Not all are that bad, but be very careful, don't do too much, and if you bleed at all call 999 please, for the sake of you and your baby, it can be serious and you need medical assistance asap xx

Ra88 · 05/09/2013 19:16

on my report it says anterior too but extending posteriorly . surely it can't be both? I'm confused !

Maybe it goes from the front, over cervix, and up the back ? mine was anterior, on the left side and covering the os, they can obviously strech quite far ! it made for a quite complex high risk section, but 2 weeks on me and baby are fine :)

Ra88 · 06/09/2013 09:21

with it sounding like its front to back I am assuming that there is very little chance of my having a VB then Confused

It won't move now if its how you describe it, completely covering the os, sorry but at least you know so catastrophe is averted.

louloutheshamed · 06/09/2013 09:30

I had an anterior low placenta at 20 week scan. Had further scans at 32, 34 and 36 weeks. When it was still low at 36 w I was admitted as they said it was too dangerous for me to go into labour, and I needed to be in hospital in case I needed emcs. Try booked a planned emcs at 38 weeks.

However, after I had been in for 4 days, hey offered me a transvaginal scan (apparently this is a new directive, as more accurate to identify exactly where placenta is than abdominal scan). They said the placenta was 3cm away from os and was likely to move Further in the last couple of weeks, so they let me go home. I am now 39 weeks and have another transvaginal scan today, but all being well I hope
To have a normal delivery.

But, I have never had any bleeding at all.

Good luck!

louloutheshamed · 06/09/2013 09:30

Planned elcs obv!!

Roshbegosh · 06/09/2013 09:42

Anterior low is not the same as completely covering the os. If it is right over the os now it won't move. A TV scan is more clear and accurate but if its over the os, it's over the os and it sounds like she could see it clearly without the need for the TV scan.

Ra88 · 06/09/2013 09:47

yes it does say to completely cover the os . I know safety of baby and myself is most important , but I'm just praying that I don't have to be admitted at 36 weeks as it is Xmas eve ! partner currently works away (self employed) so going in weeks before actually having a CS would be a nightmare

Hopefully you will be able to plan this to suit. All the best x

I have a 1 year old, 2 year old, 12 year old and 13 year old !! i spent the whole summer holidays in hospital :/ however the choice i was given was spend that amount of time away from them, or potentially leave them without a mother :( sounds harsh, but that could have been a reality, but like i said i had a few bleeds beforehand and they knew my condition was unstable.
