Teachers (or anyone really!) working around pee time?!

I could have probably worded this better! However, has anyone else been wondering how you'll tackle the 'if I don't pee now I'll literally wet myself but I have a class of children' situation now we're back?! I spoke to my HR who til me that I should ask department members who are free to cover me whilst I go, or send an e-mail to anyone else that's free to ask them. Is it just me or is this not a bit unfair on other department members? Am I being over-sensitive to others?! We are a hugely understaffed department in a large academy so there isn't really a lot of the dept. with much free time, let alone having to babysit while I pee!

Has anyone found a way around this? Is there even a solution?! It's stressing me out that I am goin to become a burden to my lovely department!

Make sure you go at break times... do you have a bladder condition?

I've always had a really weak bladder and since being pregnant it's (as you would expect) getting worse. Had to go in between every lesson before we broke up but now I fin I can't wait for usually longer than 30 mins before I need to go again - and I'm only 17 weeks!

I could try that with some of my better groups that I'm anticipating, fingers crossed! The loo is just across the corridor so hopefully I could get there and back without anyone strangling each other!

I sent an email to the whole department telling them that 'I got to pee', told the students 'I had to pee' and then delegated a complete pain in my rear end to be in charge. Killed quite a few birds with one stone with that one.
I would also be heard going down the longest corridor known to man singing, "Got to Pee. Got to Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee."

How long does it take to wee?! How old are the children? Do you have teaching assistants? Our teachers used to leave us alone for a few minutes to use the toilets. Didnt realise you can't leave even older children alone for a few minutes.

MsFiremanSam · 04/09/2013 21:38

I emailed the Head and basically said I would need support as I was suffering with sickness/extreme frequency peeing and wouldn't want to risk the safety of my classes by leaving them unattended...I'd then covered myself and left it in her hands to decide what, if anything, could be done. I got support in some lessons and an allocated person in the office and I just had to inform them if I left a lesson. However our lessons are nearly 2 hours long so I think it's reasonable when pregnant to expect to need to leave sometimes!

Pee at break times jewelled?? What about if got three lessons in a row? Yikes!
I used to nip out as one class left and next ones were lining up..i figured they could be left alone in corridor rather than in room.

I very much doubt we'll get a CA but obviously it's problem solved in that lesson if I do. We're not allowed to leave students alone for any period of time as a safeguarding measure. I have let people know so I have at least covered myself like you say.

Thanks guys, think I will just have to see how it goes - I just wanted some reassurance that someone else had/has the same problem and to get an idea of how you worked around it.

I ask the teacher next door to listen in if I need to go. Never a problem.

cakeandcustard · 05/09/2013 10:12

I kept the door open and nabbed any passing member of staff to cover for a few minutes. This was a large secondary and there was a lot of passing traffic. Either that or come to an arrangement with the teacher next door?

Marie2810 · 05/09/2013 17:16

No teacher on one side (due to said shortages) and an NQT on the other side. Have looked on my class lists and I will have a CA with one group and there is a student teacher who wants to come in a few times a week - God send! Looks like I might not have to grab anyone just casually walking by!

This was discussed during my pg risk assessment and I was told it was fine to ask the person teaching next door or opposite to listen out for any issues and run and leave them for 2 mins leaving the doors of both classrooms open. Really doesn't take much longer than running to a neighbouring classroom to borrow a textbook or similar would take.

Obviously if there was a TA I just asked them.

Ask for another risk assessment. Explain your concerns and they should be accommodating.
