Question about induction

I'm having a pessary inserted in the morning and my partner asked if he should come too. I know I'll be there about 3hrs because of monitoring but it's in the day assessment unit so had assumed I'd just go myself. Anyone else had any experienced of this? Just feels a bit like inviting him to a smear test.

Thanks all

I would say for him to go for support for you and also as the doctor will probably explain the process. My DH was there when I had mine inserted. I wouldn't say its essential for him to go but its certainly part of the induction process and you may need some support??
is this your first?

Yonionekanobe · 04/09/2013 18:47

I didn't have DH with me. We were told it would be at least 12 hours before anything would happen. This was at 9pm so I told DH to go home and get a good might's sleep. He came back to the hospital at 7am and DD was born at midday.

Sirzy · 04/09/2013 18:49

If he is free take him with you, or if you want the support but otherwise I would say its best to just let him go to work or whatever and wait until things actually start.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for coming back to me. It is my first time and the info the midwife said they'd send out didn't arrive. I just called triage and they said I'd be there 3-4hrs.

We only live a few mins from the hospital so I think I'll go in by myself and then call if I need anything and for him to pick me up. I'm keen for him to keep time off work for when the baby finally arrives. I know a pessary is the least of my worries, but hate internal exams so really dreading it. I've already decided to request gas and air for it. They may think I'm mad but I didn't even survive a sweep...!

Thanks again - I really appreciate it

Queazy, I was induced with DS (water broke but didn't go into labour) and they tried twice with the pessaries, but it had no effect on me.

Inserting the pessaries, as fa as I remember, was no different to inserting a tampon, certain I don't remember them using a duck bill doodah (ok, I forgot the name )

Yonionekanobe · 04/09/2013 19:28

Queazy, there's some interesting information on here about internal exams exams and their necessity, which I wish I'd known when I had DD as I also really struggled with them and was told to stop being pathetic by MW.

Worth going armed with the knowledge if you can find it.

I had dh drive me in but then sent him back to work. It was incredibly boring and we didn't need to both be there. From memory it was internal, then 30mins monitoring, then pessary, then a few hours later more monitoring and finally another internal. That was enough for me to be ready for te next stage but as it turned out there wasn't a bed free on delivery suite to break my waters/start the drip for 48hrs!!

Queazy · 04/09/2013 22:03

Oh thank u all. I'd only psyched myself up for the pessary - I hadn't realised they might want to do an internal as well as that. I feel like running away Hmm I just wanted to be one of these women with the stories about their waters breaking out and how it all happened so quickly etc. I can't believe I did hypnobirthing and thought I'd have a water birth - I just want it all over with now.

DH is just going to drop me off. I can't think of anything worse than having an internal exam right now, except one with an audience Wink xx

I think normally they just have a feel to find out if you're dilated atall as rather than a proper internal. I know I'm in a minority but I progressed very quickly with just a pessary; from just a little as cervix never properly closes after baby number one to 3cm in three hours and then 3cm to baby in ten minutes. It may be worth keeping your partner very reachable.

MoosheKoochak · 04/09/2013 22:27

Are you full term? I too progressed very quickly with a pessary - it had to be removed after only a couple of hours as I was having full-on contractions. I was very glad to have DH with me the whole time. But it also makes sense for your DH not to take the day off unnecessarily. I guess as long as he's within easy contact and not too far away it'll be fine.

Queazy · 05/09/2013 05:36

I'm 41w 5d - he'll be 5mins away by car. Thanks again x

My husband went with me when I was induced - however, they took so long to get round to actually doing the pessary due to an emergency that he'd gone out for lunch when they did it! I started having contractions immediately the pessary touched me - the midwife hadn't even got her hand away! So I was quite pleased he was nearby and in a position to hurry back. That said, it was then 12 hours before DD was born so he would have had plenty of time. However, she was my first and I wanted him there for the whole thing.

Queazy · 05/09/2013 17:28

It was an awful experience - I had a bishops score of 1 and haven't felt any contractions even 6hrs later. I just don't see how this is going to end in anything but an emergency c section, as my body blatantly isn't ready. Now I really feel like running away... Wink Thanks again for all your responses earlier.

If it helps you have hope OP , with my first I had to have 3 pessaries to get me going. Good luck let us know how you get on x

TarkaTheOtter · 05/09/2013 20:17

Queazy I only dilated 1/2 a centimetre with the pessary and didn't feel any contractions. They just have to get you dilated enough to break your water - the pessary itsel doesn't have to start your labour.

rallytog1 · 05/09/2013 20:27

Queazy it can take a while - I felt no contractions for eight hours after the first pessary, they were all ready to do my second pessary when my waters suddenly went with a bang and started full-on contractions. And I had a bishop's score of 1 at the start too. So don't give up hope!

chocolatemartini · 05/09/2013 20:34

You can ask for expectant monitoring instead of induction- some info on here- www.mumsnet.com/Talk/childbirth/595884-have-any-mn-rs-refused-induction-at-42-wks-if/AllOnOnePage if that's something you'd be comfortable with.

suntodayplease · 05/09/2013 21:21

Hope things have progressed for you. Like you I had a score of 1 at 42 weeks. Induction started at 10am, contractions started at 7/8pm that evening, DD was delivered at lunchtime the following day.easy to say but try and get some rest if you're not having contractions. The next few days and years are going to be tiring regardless of how you end up delivering. Good luck!

MoosheKoochak · 06/09/2013 10:10

Sorry to hear that, hope things are moving now anyway!
