too soon to buy maternity clothes? Dont want to jinx anything!

I seem to have ballooned, GP reckoned last week I was 7-8 weeks, I dont know how far gone I am, I cant remember my last period!
But all I know is, my work trousers & skirt wont fasten! I have been wearing a skirt without fastening it (there is no hope for the trousers!)
I could do with buying some clothes that fit, but I am scared to buy mat clothes too soon & jinx it & something happen.

How soon does everyone buy mat clothes?
Should I just buy a bigger size of non mat clothes?

Congrats!! I bought a few things very early for the same reason - nothing fit!!

However there are also a couple of things you can try. Leave trousers unfastened but loop a hair tie or rubber band around the button hole and the button to stretch it a bit. Also invest in a couple of bump bands which are just Lycra material to go over the bump area to smooth lines (sorry crap description but look it up). I found those really helped to smooth lines when I had stuff unfastened. Dresses are also your friend - wrap dresses in particular - you can wear as you get bigger but for now it won't be obvious.

Oh and for home get a pair or two of h and m 'mama' black jogging bottoms.

mlbear · 03/09/2013 20:08

thanks for your advice, Ill look out for them bands :) as soon as I get home I put my baggy pjs on!

Just want my scan so I know all is ok then I can start buying actual mat clothes :)

Its not too soon, i had my first maternity trousers at 8 weeks first pregnancy and was in them at 5 weeks 2nd pregnancy. Leggings with tunics are good, as well as dresses.

If you feel like it may jinx things (it really wont), just tell yourself you are buying elasticated waist trousers/jeans for comfort.

mlbear · 03/09/2013 20:21

I think I'll have a look tomorrow on my lunch break, one pair of comfort pants can't do any harm ;)
Now I just need to be stealthy when I buy so no one sees me, defo dont want people find out yet! Although looking at me I'm sure everyone knows - just being too polite to ask!

I felt the same, was convinced everyone at work was staring at me & had sussed my secret at about 8 weeks as I was so bloated & everything was so uncomfortable! I bought some maternity jeans and tops that fit properly & made me feel human again, and rationalised that I needed them to feel normal, and reminded myself if anything were to happen in the pregnancy it was for medical reasons not because I'd been shopping! And having clothes that were comfy actually made me look less bloated!

MrsHoratioNelson · 04/09/2013 05:26

By all means buy more comfortable stuff I wear, but you may find that maternity stuff doesn't fit either for a while - a lot of it needs a surprisingly large bump to stop it falling down.

Also, I have found that some of the things I have worn the most are not maternity wear at all - ordinary wrap dresses and dresses or tops with an empire line that still fit me at 8 months.

Morien · 04/09/2013 08:19

I had a phase around weeks 10-12 where everything was too tight, but I was just like you and didn't want to jinx anything by buying maternity clothes. It must have been bloating though, as it went down and I have been more-or-less comfortably in my normal clothes until this last week or so (17+4 now). What I'm finding now though is that although my normal clothes don't fit, maternity wear (I have now bought some Grin) is still too big - as MrsHN says, you need quite a bump to keep things up.

williwonti · 04/09/2013 09:04

I went through this conflict but just put sensible head on and thought, it wont "actually" affect the pregnancy. If anything, it's more important to be comfortable then all restrained and feel awful. I'm 13wks with 2DC and have been in mat trs since 11 wks and that was as long as my hair bobbles lasted!

MortifiedAdams · 04/09/2013 09:07

I bought a pair of MAternity leggings and a couple of maternity tshirts at about seven weeks (bloater!!)

Sadly I MC at 11 weeks but that would have happened regardless of whether I had the clothes or not.

They are now folded on the bottom shelf for if I am luck to get a BFP in the future.

Rockchick1984 · 04/09/2013 09:34

To be honest, at that stage you are better off buying non-maternity in a bigger size. Once you have had the baby they are useful for shrinking back down into while losing baby weight (its very depressing to still be in maternity clothes when your baby is here) and as others have said, maternity wear is likely to be too big for a while yet.

louloubellamozzarella · 04/09/2013 12:08

A lot of maternity clothes aren't that different from 'normal' clothes - e.g. elasticated waists, baggy fit - just think of it as a label and if you need clothes that fit better then go for it! Alternatively - maybe just look for some non-maternity trousers/dresses which are comfier and will see you through to until the bump develops?

I have to admit to buying some maternity stuff very early on as there was a great ASOS sale on and I couldn't resist. Got a couple of pairs of jeans, some long tops and a couple of simple dresses for about £60. I've only needed to wear the jeans so far - but I'm really glad I had them on standby as at around 10-11 weeks my bloat was too much for my normal jeans. I go for skinny fit normally, so found that there wasn't much room for a little extra chub!

I've also since bought a pair of work trousers (ASOS again - only about £20 - would highly reccommend) and a pair of mat tights - none of mine were comfortable for sitting at a desk. I pay £10 a year from their premier subscription and that gives you free next day delivery - great for when you need something in a rush/can't bear to wear tight clothes any more! I'm on the lookout for a comfy pencil skirt on ebay and that should do me for a while.

Other than that, I'm now trying to be restrained till I have an actual bump developing! I'm coming up to 15 weeks so should be in a month or two.

Do you have any loose dresses you can wear? That's what I've been mostly relying on. Bought myself a navy non-maternity jersey dress (again, ASOS...promise I don't work from them!) which is really comfy and hides the bloat well. I'll also be able to wear it post-pregnancy. I have a number of other dresses which I've been rotating for work. TBH it's getting a little boring as I've had to take my tighter fit/non-flattering dresses out of my wardrobe. Holding out to buy anything else now as I don't want to spend a fortune... what can I say, I just can't bear not to be comfy in my clothes Blush

JoJoMamanBebe do some great (although not cheap) bump bands that actually button into your normal jeans/trousers to give you much more room, and hold them up as well as smoothing out the lines. I am 26 weeks and still in normal jeans/shorts etc just through using theme. they come in black, navy and white.

button-in bump bands

birdandbee · 04/09/2013 14:06

I got my bands and trouser extenders from eBay Smile

RubyGoat · 04/09/2013 14:15

I got a pair of maternity trousers for work at 7 weeks as I was a bit thin before PG & really felt the bump under the waist band. They didn't fit for long though, recommend you get one of those things that buttons into your regular trousers if possible. And just get some larger (cheap) tops to wear for a couple of months. You'll probably use them after for a little while anyway, unless you are lucky enough to put on no extra weight at all.

TKKW · 04/09/2013 14:20

Hi, im 4-5 weeks with no 2 and just this morning, I dug out my old maternity dresses to put them in the wash basket though Im sure I won't actually get round to washing for a couple of weeks. I seem to spend about 4 days really bloated and the next couple back to my normal-ish size. With no1, I bought some nice but cheap jersey wrap style/ ruched dresses from places like tesco or sainsbury as things to wear whilst growing into "maternity".

Asda actually has some cheap maternity pieces but the quality can be rubbish on some things (like dresses- too thin/ see through) but I found jersey tops great. Cheaper than H and M and they are on line too.

TKKW · 04/09/2013 14:21

sorry meant normal clothes 1 size up.

mrspaddy · 04/09/2013 14:26

I had the same problem so bought under bump trousers from new look... They are great and dressy enough... Uncomfortable now as due in a few days but will do great until back into own clothes

Franykins · 04/09/2013 14:40

I bought my mat jeans at 7-8 weeks, turned out I am carrying twins Wink now at 27+5 I look full term so have a fair amount of mat clothes now.

MummyJetsetter · 04/09/2013 15:56

Leggings are the easiest thing and just get maternity vest tops. Maxi dresses are a godsend, I can still wear my normal ones at 35 weeks! It's never too soon to buy clothes that fit properly! Good luck at scan, sure everything will be fine, the fact you're expanding bodes well! x

Msbluesky32 · 04/09/2013 16:16

Leggings and long length tops from H and M. Open cardigans...shirt dresses with lots of room... I bought very few maternity clothes because I couldn't bare the waste! You will only wear them for a few months and you will be totally sick of them too - not worth spending a fortune. Congratulations on your pregnancy :-)
