are they always able to tell you the gender at 20 weeks?

I'm having my 20 week scan tomorrow and DP and I have agreed to find out the gender. We already have an almost 2 year old DS and would be happy with either sex. I'd just like to stop calling him/her 'it' and to be able to tell DS if he's getting a little sister or brother.

I was just wondering whether the sonographer can always see the gender in the scan. Has anyone wanted to know the gender but not been able to see it?

Thanks Smile

We asked about whether DD was a DD or a DS but she crossed her legs at the wrong moment Grin. Am actually glad we didn't find out (hadn't done with DS).

Lastofthepodpeople · 03/09/2013 13:19

Not always. Sometimes the fetus is just at the wrong angle or has its legs crossed or something. And it can be a little unreliable.

My Dsis has just found out she's having a boy (due to later scan) when she was originally told girl at the 20w one.

Kimmy1986 · 03/09/2013 13:23

I went for a private gender scan at 16 weeks and she was able to tell me it was a boy even though he had the cord between his legs, she just wobbled me about for 15mins until it moved. I think most hospitals are quite happy to tell you but I don't know how much time they would allow if it wasn't obvious like mine to begin with, which Is why I opted for a private one.

In short no. When I had my 20 week dd had her ankles crossed. As asleep with her hand over her face n not for moving. Bless the sonographer she tried tilting the bed so feet were higher than head, tried me led on a different side, sent me for a walk but the lil sod wasn't for budging. But hey ho. Anyway 20wk scan (like all of them) is really important cos they are checking for major anomalies so there were more important things going on confirming gender!

Thank you all for your replies Smile

I would like to point out I don't consider the gender reveal to be the major point of tomorrow's scan. It's a nice add on if they can find it.

I used to be a vet student and intend to go back to a medical/scientific degree after dc2 so I'm very aware of foetal defects and I'm trying to stop my scientific/medical nature going crazy by focusing on other things (like gender). I was just interested to hear of people's experiences regarding finding out the sex.

With my dd we didn't want to know and good job too because she refused to unfurl and not only could the sonographer not tell us the gender, he could only do half the measurements!

I'm now 23 weeks with dc2. Again, didn't want to know the sex but after what I saw on our scan last week I'd be majorly surprised if this baby is a girl Wink Grin

Had to have two scans, one at 20 weeks, the other at 22, because of babies position and needing to double check measurements and both sonographers have very clearly seen baby's gender, so even if I hadn't have seen what I did I think it's a give away when two sonographers have seen it quite quickly! BunInMyOven93 · 03/09/2013 15:45

i found out at 16weeks and there was no doubt that shes a girl! flashed her lady parts to everybody. Legs spread and all! :p good luck x

MissHC · 03/09/2013 16:01

Had 20 week scan twice (due to bad position of baby first time) and they couldn't tell the sex at either scan. Sonographer was head of gynaecology in a very large hospital who had lots of experience. Tried for about 10 min but nada. So no they can't always see the gender.

We were disappointed at first and I considered having a private scan but after a while we realised it's quite nice not to know.

PistachioTruffle · 03/09/2013 17:34

No, baby was in the wrong position at the 20 week scan and the sonographer couldn't tell. We ended up booking a private gender scan for around £40 so we could find out!

Peacenquiet2 · 03/09/2013 19:54

Piatachio where did u get the private gender scan if you dont mind me asking?

feekerry · 03/09/2013 20:27

no they couldn't in mine. and tbh i don't think they have the time to keep trying which is fair enough.
both times i went for a private gender scan as they are there to look speciallt for that.
the place near me is lovely and will scan from 17 weeks. 90 quid no matter how long it takes

princesscupcakemummyb · 03/09/2013 22:48

i found out with all my dc my first 2 i was told girls and they where correct my 3rd dc im expecting now im 31+3 is a boy but he wasent willing to make it easy for the sono tech lol he had his legs shut for ages she wobbled my tummy for a few mins he moved and she said boy then few moments later he opened his legs wide and it was very obvioues haha its all down to luck i was excited to find out the gender if i hadent had the chance at my scan i wud have most def paid for a private one most of all i was pleased baby was healthy Grin gl and enjoy x

CryingGivesMeAHeadache · 04/09/2013 09:57

we wanted to know but baby wasn't having any of it! for jiggled around, did star jumps, ate some chocolate, went for a walk and nothing would make it move. had to have a rescan two weeks later as they couldn't get all the measurements and it was still refusing to show us. I just like to think baby crying has some modesty Grin

ShadowSummer · 04/09/2013 18:31

DS was being very modest when I had my 20 week scan with him. He kept his legs firmly crossed throughout, so it was impossible to tell whether he was a boy or a girl. We had to wait until he was born to find out his gender.

foxy6 · 04/09/2013 19:05

with Dd they couldn't tell she had crossed her legs so they couldn't be sure. I kind of guessed she was a girl as my 4 boys had been happy to flaunt it.

ChairOfTheBored · 05/09/2013 09:34

Fresh back from ours. Having finally decided to find out on teh way to teh hospital, the baby preserved his/her modesty with legs firmly crossed, so we'll be waiting to find out in 2014.

Wierdly, before then I really wanted to know, but now I'm kind of excited by the element of surprise!

Fairylea · 05/09/2013 09:36

We didn't need to be told with ds... his penis and testicles suddenly filled the whole screen! :)

It's lucky we wanted to know anyway.. there was absolutely no mistaking what it was!

TallulahBetty · 05/09/2013 09:54

Also many hospitals won't tell you - ours won't, and the list is growing.

Toohottohandle · 05/09/2013 12:57
