Hi everyone,

How soon after getting your bfp did you see your GP? Am I right in thinking I need to see them so that they then refer me to the midwife for a booking in appointment? I can't remember how it worked with #1 and it wasn't even that long ago! I don't want to waste anyone's time, so advice would be v welcome

Pretty much ASAP, a week maybe. Though I self referred to hospital. Check your hospital's website or call them directly.

NHS advises to go as soon as you know. You won't be wasting their time!

Thank you! I guess I better make an appointment then!!!

With my first, I went as soon as I knew, she referred me straight to the
Midwife and said GPs don't get involved.

So with my second I self referred to the midwife just by giving her a ring.

I rang and had an over the phone appointment with my GP - who promptly forget to book it but never mind!

Fairypants · 02/09/2013 07:15

It varies by area.
This is dc3 for me and I had no idea either. I phoned the dr and asked the receptionist who booked an appt with the midwife.

I never had an appointment i called surgery and they gave me the MW number and i then registered with them myself. Think that is increasingly common.

Iwaswatchingthat · 02/09/2013 07:18

You don't need to see your GP. Your clinic should refer you straight to midwife who will see you at your 'booking in' appt.

SIL went to tell GP she was pregnant. His response was "congratulations but you need to see the midwife."

katemeister · 02/09/2013 07:21

I was told to make an appointment with the nurse who took all my details and referred me to the midwife and for a dating scan. My surgery advise you not to see the nurse until you are 6 weeks - so definitely varies by area!

princesscupcakemummyb · 02/09/2013 07:59

hiya i did it about a week or so after my BFP congrats Grin

fluffyraggies · 02/09/2013 08:06

I rang the Dr. when i was about 4/5 weeks and the receptionist gave me the MW mobile no.

I left a message and she rang me back with a booking in appt. with her at ... 7 weeks i think. It was meant to be 8 but she was in another village that week. She'll book your 12 week scan at that appt., so it's good it get it at the right time.

Mildpanic · 02/09/2013 08:13

You don't need to see the GP. As said by others just give the surgery a ring and ask to make a booking appointment with the midwife, they will make it according to how many weeks you are.
You may be advised to pick up a booking pack prior to the appointment as that may want you to take a urine sample to the first appointment.

With my first DS I made an appointment with the doctor at about 5 weeks, who told me I had to ring the reception & then they took my details & was told the midwife would call me on x date when I was about 8 weeks, I was a bit sceptical thinking I'd have to chase the midwife up but she did ring on x date & I got a home visit booking in appointment for 2 working days after that.

I think it must vary for which area you're in & docs surgery. I'm ringing this Wednesday as I'll be 6+6 then, exciting, I hope it's not changed much in 4 years!

MummyJetsetter · 02/09/2013 14:20

I think it's different depending on where you are. With ds1 3 years ago I went to the gp and they told the midwife but this time I went to the gp and they said I needed to contact the midwives and gave me their number. I'd ring the gp surgery and ask reception what to do in your area. x
