Is Portia too weird a name for my baby girl? Sanity check...

Hi,
I am thinking of naming our impending daughter Portia. I've always loved the name, but I have some reservations about it being too "out there", or her being hassled with tedious comments about it being like the car - Porsche.
What do Mumsnetters think?

portia sounds like you are trying too hard to be different

southeastastra · 19/06/2006 18:40

LIZS · 19/06/2006 18:41

Rather like it.

pupuce · 19/06/2006 18:43

I know a portia.
And there is Portia De Rossi (not her real name)....

motherinferior · 19/06/2006 18:47

Regan is a not very nice Shakespearian character.

zippy539 · 19/06/2006 18:51

Lovely name - go for it. Also love Welshmum's suggestion re 'the qaulity of mercy' speech at the christening/naming do. Having said that, I must go back and check the actual content of the speech but from what I remember it would be lovely. :)

Has anyone said Perdita? I knew someone who had a Perdita.

I thought it was sad.

southeastastra · 19/06/2006 18:53

CarolinaMoose · 19/06/2006 19:00

She is in King Lear. She betrays her dad, so not a great role model really.

southeastastra · 19/06/2006 19:17

In future, i wouldn't even discuss name idea's with people because throughout my pregnancy i have been put off so many names by highly opinionated people. If you like a name, go with it but there will always be somebody who isn't keen. I'm sure they wouldn't voice their opinions so tactlessly if you had already named your baby! I think Portia is beautiful and classy.
