High BMI positioning scan

Hello all,

I'm 39 weeks tomorrow and just been booked for a scan to check the position of the head. Was kind of surprised because I've been told baby is head down for weeks!

I've moved areas and hospitals and the midwife was surprised I had my last scan at 20 weeks. So my question is when should I have had this scan - is it routine for high BMI people (was 34 when conceived).

I had my 20 week scan at 22 weeks, I was told it was because the extra 2 weeks made it easier for them to see with my extra belly fat.

KirjavaTheCat · 29/08/2013 17:57

In my area we have a scan at 12, 20 and 32 weeks.

I've been told they do growth scans throughout for high bmi in my area. However in previous area with ds1 & ds2 I only had extra scans if they had concerns over size or couldn't get a clear view.

Personally I was always happy to have an extra scan means you get to baby again and check everything is going ok. I think a fair few people have positioning scans later on in pregnancy as breech or transverse babies need to be turned or delivered by c-section.

Have never heard of this as being something to do with having a high bmi.
I had a similar scan, but only as part of my sweep aapointment when I was overdue and being booked in for induction, an old scanning machine was wheeled in to double check the position.
Was it just because of your bmi?

Rollermum · 29/08/2013 18:52

Hey all thanks for replies - she said it was just for BMI. Strange...but happy to see baby again :)

I've a high bmi and have had several - the most recent and the next one are growth scans. 12w, 20w, 24w, 30w and another booked for 36w.

rachyconks · 29/08/2013 20:56

My bmi is similar and I will only have a 12 week and a 20 week as I opted for midwife led care. If you are user shared care or consultant led care in my area, you have another at 36 weeks.

worley · 29/08/2013 21:46

This is routine where I work for higher bmi ladies to have extra scans at approx 32 and 36. That bmi would be classed as consultant led care here.

Rollermum · 29/08/2013 22:12

Thanks all.

I am under consultant led care but primarily for thyroid reasons.

Worley do you know why routine for women with high BMI?

Chubby mumtobe here. Told 32 week scan helps to determine position and progress of baby when midwife can't tell manually... Due to obviously massive layer of fat. Nice.

Rollermum · 29/08/2013 22:28

Thanks Williamina! Not flattering is it! I was paranoid was to check growth and if will be enormous - and a bit annoyed because I've been asking about this for ages!

Also I don't think I've sudden got another later of fat - why did they say sooner?! Transferring between hospitals not helped here - they thought already been done I think. 39 weeks feels late for this :-/

Presentation scan at 36 weeks is usual in women with BMI >40 to confirm that the baby is head down, as it can be easier to miss a breech presentation if there is a bit more of mum in the way. Not usually routine (in UK) at lower BMI's but if the midwife has any doubt it is worth a check. The time to find out your baby is breech is not when you are in labour.

Bodicea · 29/08/2013 22:39

Where I work we do a growth scan at 34-36 weeks for hig BMI pts as it is hard to tell if baby is big of small clinically. The position of baby is also reported on then but don't routinely do a scan purely for presentation for high BMI patients. guess every hospital is different

terilou87 · 30/08/2013 20:24

Iv been told iv got to have growth scans for high BMI too but I weigh less this time than in my last pregnancy and I didn't have to have them then but I am at the same hospital as last time also they said that it's because dd was small for gestational age but she was 7lb3 which I considered healthy weight she was born at 41 weeks. She was my 3rd dc and im now pregnant with dc5. Maybe it's something new but I can't say I mind I can't wait to see my little man again!

Rollermum · 30/08/2013 21:41

Thanks all - the scan was for positioning only - very brief so no chance to see more of the baby unfortunately!

Hi - the scan is because it is harder to palpate - feel the baby - and to therefore check growth and position. And there is link between high BMI and gestational diabetes. If baby very big on scan - a potential outcome
of gestational diabetes - they may do a fasting blood sugar test.

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 31/08/2013 01:08

I have a bmi of 32 and would have just had a 12 and 20 weeks scan if I hadn't had loads of problems and previous iugr/low fluid.

LazyMonkeyButler · 31/08/2013 01:11

I was high BMI with DC3 and also had a previous history of "small babies". I didn't (and still don't) see how they worked out that 7lbs and 7lbs 7ozs were "small babies" but I'm no expert! Hmm Hmm.

I had scans at 12, 20, 24, 28, 32 & 36 weeks. Everything after the 20 week scan was purely to monitor growth. DD was born at 38 weeks weighing 6lbs 14ozs (despite being induced because she was only 5lbs and not growing).
