This doesn't always mean a big baby my babies weights were guessed wrong.

HeffalumpTheFlump · 28/08/2013 18:47

Weight estimates are notoriously innaccurate. I really wouldn't panic so much about it, they could have it wrong. There are endless stories on here of women who are told they are having a whopper and have normal sized babies or the other way around. Try not to worry. :)

HorryIsUpduffed · 28/08/2013 18:47

Breathe.

Firstly, weight by scan is notoriously inaccurate. I've known women give birth to a 7lb baby when they were told the baby was already over 9lb Hmm

Having a heavy baby doesn't necessarily mean s/he has a big head or wide shoulders. Many midwives say it's easier to deliver a bigger baby because there's more to push on.

Lastly, anyone teasing you to the point that you are getting upset and frightened is an arsehole. You do not have to stand for it. Be ruthless and blame the hormones.

Good luck x

AnythingNotEverything · 28/08/2013 18:47

Big babies are no more likely to cause problems than small babies. Successful delivery is much more about position than size, plus it's an oversized head, rather than large weight, that causes worries.

Baby might just be really really long. Make sure you haven't only got newborn sized clothes in your hospital bag.

Also, those weights are a best guess and have quite a large margin for error.

Are you seeing your midwife soon?

MamaTo3Boys · 28/08/2013 18:49

I was the same with DS2! He was 10lb 6oz born. He finally came at 40+4. I was booked to be induced at 6pm the same day but went into labour naturally at 5am. Don't worry though, big babies are apparently easier as they kinda push themselves out.

DS2 was the biggest of my 3 children and by far the easiest labour and birth.

DS1 was the smallest at 7lb 14 and the hardest labour and birth x

MamaTo3Boys · 28/08/2013 18:51

Good thinking about the newborn clothes...
I got home to realise none of the newborn size fitted DS2 and had to send my sister to asda at 9pm to buy 0-3 months x

HenriettaPye · 28/08/2013 18:52

I was told at 34 weeks baby was already 8lb. Had an CS at 39 weeks and when I was up a few days before due to swelling the doctor felt my stomach and told me is going to be 'a whopper' I asked what did he mean and he said its going to be very very big and did I mind if he done a scan as he was curious to measure the baby and he would give me an estimated weight. So he gave me a scan, all the while talking about how it's going to be massive, and estimated that my daughter would be between 12-13lb. So I panicked and repacked my hospital bag with 0-3 baby grows instead of newborn, size 2 nappies because obviously the size 1 nappies wouldn't fit her. Went for my section and the midwife held my baby up and she was tiny- 7lb 1!!

Our hospital will not even have a guess at the weight from a scan because they say it is too inaccurate.

I have heard that it is easy to push bigger babies out as well.

My son was 8lbs14 which is big but not huge and I had BIG BABY written in capital letters all over my notes at the end just from them feeling my stomach!

They worry about underweight babies but rarely about the big strong ones.

Don't worry you will be fine (I was 10lbs when born and my mum had me at home without pain relief!!)

123bucklemyshoe · 28/08/2013 19:05

DD was 8lbs exactly - had her induced in hospital and was fine. DS was 9lb 3oz and I had him at home. I know this sounds easy to say the more relaxed you are the less problems you are likely to have. I had great support and had both without any pain relief - I did a kind of self taught breathing thing - (apparently it was hypno birthing). It isn't because I am some kind of natural birth nazi, just scared of anesthetics etc.
Honestly it can be fine and might be for you too. I was scared (more of the unknown) and remember you are in control. Do what works for you and this is the time to be completely selfish.

Good luck!

Big babies can help .being born apparently . Ds1was 5lbs 15 and I had lots of stitches . A friend had a bigger baby and no stitches . Try not to worry as there isn't anything you can do. Big babies tend to be more content in my experience my baby needed feeding every two hours . I was so tired ! Raspberry leaf tea is good drank it with ds2and needed hardly any stitches and he was bigger .

FondantNancy · 28/08/2013 20:29

I have NEVER heard of anyone having a correct estimate of weight from a scan. My SIL was told she was having a 9lb-er and the baby was 7lb6! I don't know why they even bother. Please try not to worry (easier said than done I know!).

Beckmum4 · 03/09/2013 07:16

37weeks today and fears still there. I went to see midwife and burst in to tears she's referred me straight back to my consultant for reassurance she says and possible induction date. What worries me now is that they won't offer me any help and won't be able to reassure me and i'll spend the rest of the pregnancy scared. I truly am thank you ladies for your reassurance I truly hope your right. Truly do. As in my head now a extra week on he's now 8lb 11oz :(

So sorry to hear you are still so worried. Please just try and keep in your mind that the estimate could be wrong. The main thing is that they are keeping an eye on you now and you will have every opportunity to discuss your fears. Anxiety can so easily run away with you so just try and keep as calm as you can, try not to assume the worst case scenario will come true.

If there is reason to worry then they will do something about it. If there is no reason to worry then they will be able to reassure you. Sending you all the best wishes x

CoolaSchmoola · 03/09/2013 13:08

I had GD and was induced at 39 weeks because my baby was measuring 10lb+...

DD was born on the third day of induction, so 39+3 after a morning of syntocin and she was a MASSIVE

6lbs 7.5oz.

She was TINY.

Like you I spent weeks worrying and like SO many others the only massive thing was how massively wrong they guesstimated her weight to be. There is every chance your baby is nowhere near the size they have said so please try not to worry too much (and I know that's easy to say, not easy to do).

GreatJoanUmber · 03/09/2013 13:22

Beck what exactly are you scared of? What sort of "help" are you expecting from the health professionals?

It boggles my mind that this comes up so often on here - Help, I'm measuring ahead; or Help, growth scan shows big baby.
Those are estimates and more likely than not completely wrong. And then, what's wrong with having a big baby? Absolutely nothing, IMO. I'd be scared if I'd been diagnosed with IUGR and/or told that baby is measuring small.
A big baby is (usually) a healthy baby; feels less "breakable" and has lots of physical advantages over average or small sized babies.
The myth that big babies are harder to push out is just that - a myth. You are more likely to end up with complications due to an induction, than due to having a big baby.

So yeah, I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't get the panic over a weight estimate.

MamaTo3Boys · 03/09/2013 13:57

Weight estimates can be wrong.

DS1 I was told he was a big baby, they even thought I may be having twins at one point because my stomach was huge! He weighed 7lb 14oz.

DS2 they said was a small baby and I was carrying a lot of water, so they tested me for diabetes. He was 10lb 6oz (and the easiest one to push out)

DS3, I was told I was going to have another 10lber so they induced me at 38.5, he was dead on 8lb.

CuppaSarah · 03/09/2013 14:31

Firstly the estimated weight is very often hugely inaccurate. My SIL was told the smallest her baby could be was 9lbs if she was lucky. She had a tiny little 8lb baby instead.

The secondly, your body really does know what it's doing. If it's making a slightly bigger baby, there's a good chance it's because your body can handle a bigger baby. You and baby are going to be absolutely fine.
