Moses basket, cot or both?

Wandering about where baby will sleep. Presumably I will want the baby in the same room as me for the first few months. So this will mean a Moses basket for downstairs. Do I carry the same basket up and down stairs- without baby in it, or have a second basket or a cot up in my bedroom?

What did/do you do?

Thanks in advance.

I'm planning on having a Moses basket which I will transport up and down stairs. I also have a carrycot as part of the pram so no doubt will use that for downstairs too.

I loved my moses basket and will be having one again for this baby.

When babe is tiny you can swaddle her and put her in the basket and it's small enough to hold her safe. Basket can then be placed in the cot/in the carry cot of the pram/on the sofa next to you/on the bed during the day - or you can put two low chairs, seats together, by your bed, put the basket between them, and have an instant bedside cot for the first few weeks. They're just brilliant.

You can settle baby down beside you in the eve. downstairs, then carry it upstairs still fast asleep (fingers crossed) when you go up to bed.

I has a rocking stand for mine, which meant you could stick an arm out of bed to rock it and stay warm ( I had a winter baby)!

Oh ok. All practical suggestions. Moses basket sounds fine for now then. I imagine I will be having quite a long baby so will see how long we can go before a cot becomes a necessity.

Thanks.

ive bought a moses basket for downstairs use and a crib for upstairs which will last the baby 6 months Smile

PeriodMath · 28/08/2013 19:52

Moses basket for up to 3 months (depending on length of baby - mine was long and we got about 3 months out of it) then cot. I think they like the close confines of the basket to begin with plus it makes then very portable. I used to cart the basket around during baby's naps depending on which room I was in.

lagoonhaze · 28/08/2013 19:54

None ! We adapted a cot into a side car for our bed. Much easier and wish i did it for dc1.

PinkFondantFancy · 28/08/2013 19:56

Sidecar cot like a baby bay, for sure! Wish I'd known about them when I had DD1

chillisbopper · 28/08/2013 20:30

We have a Moses basket and then he'll be on to the cot. I just plan to carry the basket to whatever room I'm in. I also have a rocking stand Smile.

I only bought the Moses basket 2 days ago from Babies 'R' Us. I had put off getting one as not sure how much use we would get from it because DH is quite tall as are the other men in his family so I thought our boy might be long too. Babies 'R' Us have them in variable sizes and I think the one we got it reasonably longer than I originally expected so I'd recommend having a little look around in there Smile

SIDS guidelines recommend that a baby sleeps in the same room as parents for the first 6months of life. Due to this I would not use a Moses basket, as they will only last to around 3 months. however, a full size cot will not fit in our room, so I will be using the Troll crib from John Lewis. Once baby is past the 6 months mark I will use a cot in the baby's room.

HorryIsUpduffed · 28/08/2013 20:39

My first two lasted no longer than six weeks in the Moses basket before being too long. Nonetheless they had lots of use from it. Easy to take up- and downstairs as necessary.

This time we have a higher bed so I am going to have a stand for the basket as well (free, second-hand from a near neighbour whose (definitely final) baby is just growing out of his basket at 4 months.

We couldn't fit a full cot in our room for the stage between 6w and 6m. We had chosen a lovely gliding cradle which was suitable until they could pull up to sitting at around six months.

If I was starting again I don't know what I'd do, tbh. I could use the pram carrycot downstairs and the cradle upstairs and miss out the Moses completely. I was pretty neurotic and at first I "slept" with my fingers in the basket to feel pfb's chest moving. I couldn't have done that with a cradle across the room!

I co-slept a lot with DS2 (mixture of ideology and necessity) but I would still always want baby to have a bed as well as my bed.

dizzy77 · 28/08/2013 20:43

Horry my two were out of the Moses basket within 6 weeks too, they weren't particularly big or long just stopped wanting to sleep in it when they noticed they were touching the sides. We did cart it up and down stairs, this harder with Ds2 as had to negotiate stairgates without waking a sleeping baby comedy.

We were lucky and were given or bought from ebay all our baby sleeping equipment, and also had a crib we got for £25 in out room, so we then used the MB downstairs and the crib upstairs. When the babies grew out of the mb we laid them in the pushchair laid flat which had the added advantage we could rock them.

ilovepowerhoop · 28/08/2013 20:48

we had a crib upstairs and the carrycot bit of the travel system for downstairs. Didn't bother with a moses basket as they don't last long

lagoonhaze · 28/08/2013 20:52

Ps space saver cot good if space limited.

We lost bedside table on one side to make room.

We now have a superking bed. Wish we had brought it years ago!

ThoughtsPlease · 28/08/2013 20:56

I have had 3DC and never had a Moses basket, they have all slept in a cot from birth.

dizzy77 · 28/08/2013 21:55

If you decide not to bothervwith humping the moses basket upstairs and are concerned about tiny baby being lost in a giant cot, a trick I learned from the hospital is to make a horseshoe shape out of a bath towel rolled lengthways and tuck into a pillowcase to make a sort of nest, iyswim. DS2 is in his "nest" in the crib at the moment.

Wincher · 28/08/2013 22:20

Ds1 hates the Moses basket, I think because he couldn't see out from it. Wenalso had a swinging crib but he just wantednto be next to me. We got a sidecar cot where he was about 6 weeks which was brilliant. This time round I will try the Moses basket again but will set up the cot from day 1 as well. Sidecar cots are great for small bedrooms too - we will have it squished up against the wall on one side and the bed on the other. People always say they and to move their children out well before 6 months because the cot won't fit in their room, but surely most people have 70cm to one side of the bed?

HorryIsUpduffed · 28/08/2013 23:02

In old house I had 35cm between the side of the bed and the wall, and a cradle size space next to the chest of drawers (having evicted the wardrobe). The cot was more like 90x120 (cotbed) so definitely didn't fit.

For us a cotbed plus cradle (total cost £250) has been more cost effective than cot proper then junior bed. Long babies, again, who are too big for a standard cot before they would be safe in a normal single bed.

ShesADreamer · 28/08/2013 23:15

Cot bed with side removed fixed to our bed for nights, combination of pram carrycots, me, DH, grandma or older sibling for daytime in the early weeks!
From about 2 months, naps at home upstairs or out in pram.

Lottiesmama312 · 29/08/2013 06:33

We were given two moses baskets so had one downstairs and one upstairs! Our little one lived in them for the first 3 months, then we bought a second hand crib (bought new mattress!) which lasted her until we put her in her own room just after 5 months.
I loved her Moses but she could of just had a crib! Grin
