Two days straight of sickness after taking Folic acid, do I take another?

Boring subject but for the past two days I, as always have been taking my Folic acid supplement. Within 1/2 hour or so I have been throwing the tea I have drunk and with the first mouthful I drink I've been taking my Folic acid. Should I be concerned and take another to replace what I have thrown up or would it be far enough down into my digestive system?

i don't know if it will have been absorbed but i do know that you can take 10 times the recommended dose and it's still not dangerous so you can easily take a double dose and do no harm. don't want to make yourself sick again though do you? maybe check with a pharmacist?

Writerwannabe83 · 28/08/2013 11:24

I take 5mg folic acid tablets a day so a much higher dose than the normal 40mcg - (its about 25 times the dose I think!!) and I also have an extra dose on top of that via my Pregnancy Plus vitamins. As has been said, you can't overdose on folic acid.

It usually takes about 20 minutes for tablets to dissolve and get digested.

Could you take your tablet at a time when your sickness isn't as bad?
Or is this sickness not part of your normal 'morning sickness' but something separate?

No it seems to just be in the mornings when I have gone all night with no food that I get the nausea. I'm only 9+2 weeks so early days but have learnt that if I have a drink in the morning it brings on the sickness. I was sick about 10 or so minute ago and the nausea feeling has disappeared. Same thing happened yesterday. I've got my first midwife appt next Tuesday so I could ask then I suppose.

I'm 9wks+5 and I have also found nausea to be bad in the morning, which only seems to be made worse when I eat. I decided last night to eat something really late at night (which was 4 sandwiches and a bag of crisps at 11pm) and when I woke up this morning I felt absolutely fine!!

I also found that having a drink in the morning made me feel quite queasy so I didn't have one this morning. I had a sip of water to take some medication I'm on but waited a full 2 hours after waking until actually having a real drink alongside my breakfast. Still no nausea Smile

As for cups of tea though, even the thought of them makes me want to be sick!! I used to LOVE tea but I haven't been able to face a cup of it for well over 3 weeks now. Even seeing a cup of tea or smelling it makes me feel really nauseous. I have only been drinking water for the last 3 weeks Smile

If you're less sick in the evenings you could take your folic acid at night. I always found that folic acid itself made me nauseous but was less likely to have an impact if I took it before I went to bed.

AnythingNotEverything · 28/08/2013 11:43

Some people swear by a packet of biscuits by the bed - eat a couple before you even sit up, and apparently it kills that hunger/nausea feeling.

It's horrid though.

Wrt your folic acid tablets - could you take them at a different time of day? I think they're most effective when taken before conception and in the very early days, so I wouldn't worry about missing the odd one now.

It'll most likely get much better in 2-3 weeks when your placenta takes over.

Oh, and congratulations!

K8eee · 28/08/2013 11:46

I think I'll change when I take Folic acid, that makes sense. Why I hadn't thought of that before I don't know.

Writer I have been the same with tea, it's only been the last couple of days I've attempted to drink one and only once have I kept it down and that was in the evening. All I seem to want I eat at the moment is carbs and no meat. I could quite easily turn veggie at the moment. And I want carbonated drinks all the time which I know isn't good Hmm

I've always got a packet of Rich Tea biscuits in my bedside drawers :)

K8eee · 28/08/2013 11:48

Thanks anything. I'm taking the seven seas ones. I'm so worried about the whole spina bifida thing Confused

I have thought about the biscuit thing, might give it a go. I daren't eat anything in the mornings early as I much prefer throwing up a drink or stomach acid (sorry if tmi!!!) although that has for a nasty colour and taste Blush

As has been said, the folic acid is more important to take prior to pregnancy I think in order to get high levels into the body for as soon as conception takes place. My Consultant wanted me on my high dose tablets for at least 3 months before even trying to conceive but this is because of other medication I'm on.

By our stage of pregnancy the spine is pretty much already formed I think so little point worrying anymore??

K8eee · 28/08/2013 12:03

So when I have my first scan in a few weeks will they be able to check that the spine if formed properly? Yeah I was told the same too, I was taking I on and off but didn't always remember Sad

I think they can tell at the 12 weeks scan - but I'm not 100% sure....

TobyLerone · 28/08/2013 15:42

It's possibly the tea, rather than the folic acid. Try it with water tomorrow and forgo the tea. It's not usually a good idea to take tablets with hot drinks anyway.

Cally123 · 28/08/2013 18:22

I wouldn't worry about it all too much. My doctor said that its usually within in first 3 weeks that diseases like spina bifida are developed so little you can do about it after then. As I was worried because I had awful morning sickness and my pregnancy supplement made me feel so much worse so I didn't take it everyday.

Applepiesky · 28/08/2013 18:26

I would be sick if I took frolic acid with no food. Would normally take in evenings once eaten and would be fine then.

RosesInTheRain · 28/08/2013 21:49

Yes FA is most important in the very early stages, 4-7 weeks I've been told. Spina bifida is a neural tube disorder, apparently they can see severe cases at the 12 week scan, other NTDs such as acrania and anencephaly can be seen clearly (bitter experience). My consultant says spina bifida can't be completely ruled out at a 12 week scan, think I get an extra scan at 16 weeks to check again (due to NTD history).

K8eee · 29/08/2013 09:19

Cally did you have a healthy baby from the lack of FA? Is spina bifida a disorder you inherit?

OP posts:
TwickyWoo · 29/08/2013 13:20

We're recommended to take FA, although I'm not sure whether it is necessarily a 'life or death' thing and suspect that most of it stems from the fact that many people are not eating a balanced diet these days. You get folic acid from a whole host of foods anyway, and they supplement cereals, butters etc with it as well now.

I would suggest that if you're feeling worst in the mornings, then take the supplement in the evenings with your dinner to minimise any chance that it is this making you feel sick. I suspect it is the tea or just morning sickness though to be honest as I wouldn't have thought 10mins was long enough for it to be absorbed anyway.

Taking the supplement does not guarantee you won't have a child with SB, creft palate etc either, it is just felt that taking it can improve your chances of not getting problems. Same would be said for not taking it - i.e. it won't mean you will definitely have a problem. There are a lot of people that find out they are pregnant later on into the pregnancy and have healthy babies all the same! :)

www.babycentre.co.uk/a476/folic-acid-in-pregnancy - This explains what foods you could be eating instead or as well as the supplement if you choose to not take it... and to be honest - if you're eating a good selection of things from this list then the healthy diet will be doing you a lot more good than worrying about remembering to take a pill everyday.

Congratulations and the best of luck - feeling sick when you're pregnant is a bummer!
