Can't sleep :(

Hi

I'm looking for words of wisdom! I'm 9 weeks at the moment and have the usual tiredness, but still can't sleep at night (getting to sleep is a nightmare- 2 or 3 hours laid awake is normal). I then am shattered in a morning and really droop late afternoon. I don't think getting to sleep is bring helped by my bad nausea feeling or heartburn. I've tried ginger and it doesn't do anything for me. Any other sickness or heartburn advice, or ideas of how to help getting to sleep generally?

I'm a teacher, going back to work next week and genuinely scared I won't be able to cope if I carry on like this!

Please help!!! X

I am similar with lack of sleep. I am 22+5 now and get 3/4 hours on an average night. I work in an office, so no summer holiday :(

I try all sorts. Last night I had a bath, I have just had a milky drink, didn't eat late, and kept myself busy during the day, but still awake now.

I think the only thing that gets me longer sleep time is going to the gym, but I am too tired to do that every day.

So second best is to not panic that I am not sleeping and try and rest whem I can.

I have also been taking my pregnancy vitamin tabs again in the vain hope that making sure I am getting the right iron and vitamins will help. We shall see.

It would help if dp didn't keep coming to bed at 2 or 3 in the morning, he knows that is my witching hour! But working on that.

Sorry for no great words of wisdom, just try not to worry about being tired, it will only wind you up.

Also try going to bed earlier and getting up for a couple of hours in the night before going back to bed. That is my next plan. I might try to do something like bake some cakes!

All the best and congratulations on your pregnancy.

Me too! Am 17 weeks pg and seem to be awake most nights. Hay fever is bad at the mo and the antihistamine recommended by dr apparently has a sedative effect. I'm hoping it works as in going to try it tonight! Sorry- no other tips, I'm afraid.

HeinzKetchup · 27/08/2013 05:35

I'm sorry to say I think it's only gonna get worse! I'm 34+2 and have been getting less and less sleep as the weeks go on Hmm think its preparation for the sleepless nights ahead arrrgghhh Grin

Oddlife · 27/08/2013 06:27

Yep I'm the same 34 wks too- and for last few weeks have been struggling with 1.5-2 hrs a night. For example tonight eventually fell asleep just after 2:00 and back awake before 4:00. Builders arriving in 30 mins so no chance now. I think it's a major design flaw in pregnancy to exhaust us before the baby arrives!

JustCallMeBaldrick · 27/08/2013 06:37

I just came on to post the same thing! I'm 14 weeks, and I've been awake since 3.30 when DS woke up and needed his duvet putting back on his bed. I don't have any trouble getting to sleep, but as soon as one of the DCs wakes me up that's it for the night Sad
At least DH is on holiday , do I am getting a nap most days, although I'm dreading next week when he's back at work!

Apparentlychilled · 29/08/2013 03:15

And it's anor rubbish night's sleep.... Went to bed at 10.15, woken by DH coming to bed at 11, then was cold at 12, then slept lightly till DD just woke me (she can't seem to decide if the landing light shd be on or off - it varies from night to night and she feels the need to wake me to tell me if it shd be on or off...).

KarmaBiatch · 29/08/2013 03:40

for the heartburn.. go to your doctor to get a prescrip for ranitidine (sp?) it has been a lifesaver throughout my pregnancy, now 33+2 and can't sleep due to being poked and prodded from the inside Wink

ElleCloughie · 29/08/2013 04:30

34+6, also finding it hard to sleep. Not sure why - sometimes Little One is wriggling when I wake up, but often she's not. Sometimes it's just yet another trip to the loo and for some reason I can't nod off again afterwards! Thank god I started maternity leave this week, nothing worse than lying there awake in the middle of the night thinking "Need to start getting ready for work in X hours..."

Gave up on lying in bed this morning and taking advantage of being the only one awake to watch last nights Who Do You Think You Are and have a cup of tea!

bec0901 · 29/08/2013 05:00

Me too and I'm only 14 weeks so not remotely uncomfortable yet. I remember this happened last time. There is a lot going on in my head thinking about work, going on maternity leave, DD starting a new nursery, etc...

AhoyAhoy · 29/08/2013 08:03

31+2 and also back to work on Monday. Last night I was up a 2 for the loo and then wide awake. Eventually I moved into the spare room and set up the futon. My husband's snoring wasn't even that bad last night, I just didn't want to listen to him breathing.
Work is gonna be tough, I think I have developed SPD this week, and as I am leaving soon, I don't have a classroom to call my own anymore so am expected to move between lessons. This would be fine if I could walk! Don't want to get signed off as I believe I can be made to start mat leave early.

OP, just be glad that you are heading towards your second trimester. If you are anything like me you will just suffer minor niggles and will be tired out from the day so sleeping is mostly better. Good luck!

AhoyAhoy · 29/08/2013 08:06

P.s so sorry, no helpful advice, just a self indulgent winge. (really worried about work)

Xenadog · 29/08/2013 08:24

I'm worried about going back to school too next week. I have got used to being on holiday and would like mat leave to begin now but as I will only be 25 weeks next week I don't think it's happening.

I've got the heaviest timetable I have ever had as well and don't know how I am going to cope especially as the sleeping thing isn't brilliant at the moment either.

The thought of going back and being permanently exhausted, working long hours and having only about 3 things to wear (I don't want a lot of new clothing for 11 weeks max) means I am going to be pretty miserable.

Franykins · 29/08/2013 10:04

Sleep, what is this you are talking of? I can't get comfy at all so maybe snooze for an hour, wake up go to the loo, toss and turn for ages, snooze for a bit, get up again. Its a nightmare. I am now 26+6 and it is getting worse. between weeks 12-22ish it was a lot better, would wake up for the loo but be able to fall asleep again, but now my hips hurt if I lay on one side for too long and its safe to say that I can't 'roll' over anymore just heave myself from side to side. I'm kinda dreading the next 11-13 weeks as I think I'm going to get massive (carrying twins) and I already look full term! Having had this moan I am otherwise loving being pregnant Smile
