Yogurt and butter

Hello all, I am wondering if anyone knows which brands, if any, of yogurts and butter are made with unpasturised milk? This is my first pregnancy and am unsure whether to go ahead and eat dairy products which do not state if they are pasturised or unpasturised...any advice form more experienced women would be appreciated!

You're safe with all yoghurts and butter. It's only mould ripened cheeses you have to avoid. Even Parmesan is fine to eat even though it's un pasteurised so things like Brie and Camembert and blue cheeses you can't have. x

If you look on the nhs website it says what you can and can't eat. You can even eat mould ripened cheese (like Camembert) if its cooked through as it kills germs

Supermarket yogurts and butters are always pasteurised and safe. You would only need to check if buying from a farmers market or eating in a very fancy restaurant.

Thanks everyone - there's lots to think about and it can get exhausting figuring it all out. x

Midnight it feels like that at first but it's not nearly as bad as you first think. Use nhs as guide as too many conflicting views otherwise.

Main things to avoid:
White rind soft cheese (ie Brie etc) unless cooked, most hard cheese is find
Alcohol
Pâté (including veg)
Mr whippy (due to germs)
Raw eggs (although most people say lion stamped are ok I haven't risked it yet)
Raw meat (steak etc should be well done)

Basically if you cook everything well you should be fine

Oooh can I ask if ricotta is ok? As I want to eat those spinach and ricotta pasta things.

Sorry to hijack thread?

brettgirl2 · 26/08/2013 08:02

I think ricotta is fine but if you are cooking it then you can eat any cheese anyway.

Ok thanks. Its just so hard to know what is good and whats not!! Seem to be getting the hang of it but then something pops up I am unsure about!

Spinach and ricotta cannelloni is fine as it's cooked. I actually choose to eat runny eggs. A decision based on the lion mark, the fact I've never been poisoned by one in my life and that it would only give me a bad tummy and wouldn't affect the baby. x

Same here, I do eat runny eggs. Haven't had any alcohol, paté, brie etc though and all meat I eat is well-done (even if it ruins a great steak). I did eat sushi though (as that needs to be frozen beforehand and I always checked with the place that sold them).

I agree with the advise - stick to the NHS list and after a while if you're comfortable with knowing what you can/can't eat you can do some research if you really fancy something that's on the list Smile

Oh yes and stay away from McFlurry's.
