Am I a loon?

Hi all, looking to collect a smidge of advice:

  1. How many bed options do I need? So far I've picked up a carry cot, a crib and will obviously purchase a cot when the time comes. Do I need a moses basket?

  2. Is it complete idiocy (hence my title) to not set up a nursery until my baby is actually going to use it (6 months after birth)? The future-nursery is currently my spare room, and I'd rather keep it for visits from family/friends etc than put a cot in it that won't be used for months (there's not the space for both and the swinging of a cat).

  3. Am I just having an "Oh shit, I'm actually having a baby in less time than I've been pregnant so far" fret?

I want a glass of wine...

  1. the carrycot is for the pushchair I presume? crib upstairs? i didn't have a moses basket for my first, although it is useful to have something downstairs to pop them into if necessary. we had a beanbag or used the carrycot from the pram

  2. no, not idiocy at all! perfectly normal

  3. possibly, but that's ok Wink

yesterday thank you, I feel significantly less fretty now, I live in a bungalo, so theoretically I could carry baby sleep-box from room to room. And yes, the carrycot is for a pushchair, but I suspect it will spend more time on the stand it came with than on the pram-base.

ahh yeh if you're all on one level you don't need more baby-sleeping-places i wouldn't have thought :)

when are you due?

BonaDea · 22/08/2013 21:48
  1. I didn't have a Moses basket and haven't missed it (DS is 5 months). I used the carry cot on the pram for naps in the day and I have a co-sleeper cot for night time. The co-sleeper is a baby bay maxi and has lasted all this time (ds is long) and DS will be in it til he moves out of our room next month.
  1. I am only now sorting DS' own room. Cot ordered and coming and wallpaper chosen. Absolutley pointless doing it all now IMHO.

Good luck!

yesterday I'm not due until December, but as my mother says "it doesn't do to be previous", which apparently means "get organised you silly fart, you're going to be too tired and fat to do anything by then".

Bona I'm glad they're not absolutely necessary - as pretty as they are I kind resent the idea of paying such a lot of money for something that has only one purpose and is used for so short a time (I held similar views about veils for my wedding, was called mad then too!). Am also very relieved to know I'm not alone in not really getting the tearing need to set up a room for a purpose it won't be put to for nearly a year, it's valuable space I could fill with other kinds of crap in the meantime.

well, december isn't that far away.
No, i fully agree, it is good to be organised. that way you can sit back and relax and know everything is ready and waiting.

It sounds like you have a good plan to me.

Depends how easy you'll find it to go through the upheaval of the revamp and any decorating with a 6mo.

Mind you, my waters broke while I was glossing the picture rail in the nursery, so can't say I managed to actually be ready ahead of time as planned! Also, I use the nursery every day for all nappy changes, a safe place to park him while I dress/shower etc and for reading time. And we didn't have to give up our spare room (that was taken by me and DS so dh could get some sleep for work Wink). I didn't have any visitors that would want to stay with a really young baby in the house either...
