I've just purchased some of the tommee tippee advanced comfort bottles.

neversleepagain · 22/08/2013 22:26

Another Avent fan here. You don't need loads of bottles, we managed with just 8 for our twins.

If you want to save money consider a Milton sterilising tub, they are only a tenner in Mothercare and very easy to use.

Stom91 · 22/08/2013 23:52

Ahh cool thanks. Mum got me a steriliser second habd it had been barely used for £5 bargain..

A microwave steam steriliser was a godsend

This This This Grin

Used the same microwave steriliser with all 3 DCs. They are fab. If i remember rightly with mine you put a couple of ozs of water in the bottom tray, load with bottles (and dummies) in the middle tray, put the lid on and bung it in the micro for ... was it 6 mins or something? Then you had to let it sit for a few mins - just be careful of the heat when you take the lid off and - hey presto - they're done. If you take them out while still warm they air dry in moments. (used to love seeing XH juggling the steaming hot bottles because he wouldn't wait) Or you can just leave them all in there in the steriliser in the micro. out of the way.

Phineyj · 23/08/2013 08:03

I recommend using an ovenglove when you handle the microwave steamer -- burns aren't fun! Other than that they are really easy to use.

We have used SMA readymade bottles with the 'disposable' teats (which you can resterilise) -- great for a quick feed out and about and in the middle of the night. But get the white teats not the red ones as red is fast flow and will drown a newborn!

This is a brilliant gadget (Tommee Tippee do a similar one I think):

You will soon find out what a difference 5 minutes makes...

Ooh and also.. This may sound silly. But when dd is here how much will i need to feed her like 2 oz etc I'm really scared I'm not going to give her enough or I'll give her too much.. Also any good milk powders I was looking at the aptimil breastfeeding one it has the same qualities as breast milk apparently :S there's all so much lol

OP posts:
MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 23/08/2013 10:33

Aptamil does not have the same qualities as breastmilk, none of them do.

Formula milks all contain adequate nutrition - what they have to contain is prescribed by law.

From birth you need a stage 1 or first milk, they are all suitable. So it's just a case of seeing which one your baby gets along with best, when you are choosing have a look at which milks are stocked by your local shops - if you run out and it's a less common brand only stocked by a shop 20 miles away you are stuffed.

I have to ask - are you making an informed choice to formula feed? Are you aware that not breastfeeding increases the risks of many illnesses (in particular gastroenteritis and other infections) and cot death?

If you are aware of all the facts and have made an informed decision then obviously it's your call. But it would be a shame to make a big decision like this without the facts.

We have avent bottles and Ds easily switches between them and bf. I also have the avent electric pump which works brilliantly for me (though haven't tried any others to compare). We chose avent because absolutely everywhere sells it- supermarkets, boots, corner shops etc so we figured that if we ever needed to replace something at home or away it would be a simple process, and it has been! We also have the avent steam steriliser for the microwave. Really easy to use, holds loads and takes 6mins.

Hi

I got tommy tippe wi my first one... But shr kept turning the teats inside out and i really wasnt having a good time with them. Then my friend gave me two avents and i have to say i used them from then on... I have bought an avent steriliser this time on offer from amazon and got my sisters bottles wi new teats... I personally wouldnt buy the set as i thought the small bottles werent much use as u can use the bigger bottles and put less in but once they drink more than is in the little bottles they arent much use?!? But that is my opinion... My mum mbought me some of the new mothercare bottles as she was sold on the shpeal they gave her but the teats are a nightmare to get into the holders and i have read some pretty cruddy reviews... Will give them a go though as they are bottles i dont have to buy if they work lol.

Good luck on your purchase of whatever you choose. Unfortunately all bottles dont suit all babies x

Hi OP, I admire you for doing this research before your little one arrives! I also used Tommee Tippee in the early days, then switched to Avent. Found them reliable and very easy to clean. The powder dispensers are great when you're out & about, as is a small flask of boiled water. We moved onto (Nuby) straw type bottles at 9 months and were onto cups and sipper bottles by about 14 months. No real hassle making the move - my DS loves his milk so much! He has been on cows milk since his first birthday. There's an earlier post that talks about all formula milks being the same. This is true IMO - plus they are all safe & nutritionally balanced - so best to choose a basic one based on price & availability, if your baby isn't prescribed a special one by the doctor. Formula milk is a breastmilk substitute and it doesn't have substances to boost baby's immunity, which can be helpful if baby arrives early and in the first few days after birth. I know you're not sure about breastfeeding...but it is useful to study how other women feed their newborns, to help you get ready for bottlefeeding. Look at the way they hold baby close as he/she latches, and how to watch their feeding cues to see if baby is hungry/satisfied. Close contact (baby skin touching yours) feels very snuggly and will help you grow closer. Be open minded - you might feel like giving breastfeeding a go and - like some mums - really love it! If it doesn't work out (and it's not always easy at the start), you can ask your health visitor to help. And if bottles are right for you (they're YOUR boobs and it's YOUR baby), making up feeds will soon become second nature. Breastfeeding can be a bit quicker/cheaper overall, but the most important thing is that baby is fed. Good luck with it all. Whatever you end up doing, I support you. Enjoy your precious bundle! x

Hi all, so I'm about to purchase a new steriliser, I'm due with my first baby in 11 weeks. What's stopping me is the mountain of advice on what bottles are best (to avoid colic etc) and whether different bottles work with the chosen steriliser. I have been looking at the avent steam steriliser as this seems to have the best reviews. Can you tell me if I can use different brand bottles in this or just avent and what bottles you recommend?

Very confused!!!!

Sorry I should of said that's exactly what I intend to do but just getting organised in case I have trouble with that. Also although i have to see how I get on even if my boobs are successful I will probably introduce the bottle too so my partner can join in and that I can ensure baby is getting right measurements but yes boob first!

MortifiedAdams · 25/08/2013 10:48

I bought Tommee Tippe ones. And the microwave steriliser. Plus four little bottles.

Id do 3oz feeds, and would offer more if she finished ot all (rare). After a few weeks, this upped to 4oz amd so on.

Always make the feeds up.with hot water. I mever reheated though - dd always had her milk at room.temp.or fridge cold.

Thomsjen · 25/08/2013 11:05

I also have my breast bump ready so if I produce enough I will express too! The breast pump is Medela.

Thomsjen · 25/08/2013 11:08

Thanks for that, yes I've heard good things about tommee tipee especially the anti colic range, seems its a bit of a bargain at the moment too.

MortifiedAdams · 25/08/2013 11:12

What I like about the TT range is all the lids and bottle interchange - when we were making the transotion from.bottle to cup for dd, we could put the bottle teat on her new cup, then after a while, put a cup lid on.

IComeFromALandDownUnder · 25/08/2013 11:12

Tommy tippee were much to fast for my little one and gave her dreadful colic. I switched to Nuk and have not looked back. Bear in mind that you may have to switch bottles of they don't work for your baby. When they are tiny I think the slower the teat the better. You can always change teats as you go along. I would recommend buying at least 8 bottles. Good luck.
