How many midwife appointments?

Stevie77 · 22/08/2013 11:34

Been for my booking in appointment today and been told I won't see the midwife again until 16 weeks and then not again until 25 weeks!

That's not right, surely? With my first I was seen every four weeks until later in pregnancy, and took some comfort in knowing someone is keeping check. This seems borderline negligent! !

That was right for me (with 20 week scan in between) and this is my first baby! Then I saw again at 28, 31, 34, 36,38 etc

Breadrollsbuns · 22/08/2013 11:38

This was the same for me. I've also just come back from my 38 week appointment, where I was told that there was no time to talk about pain relief and that my next appointment would be at 41 weeks Angry !!

islingtongirl · 22/08/2013 11:39

How annoying breadrolls...I also sometimes feel rushed out, we have never talked about pain relief or birth plan, literally in and out in under 10 mins!

badguider · 22/08/2013 11:41

This is my first and I've seen the MW at 8, 16, 24, 28, 32, 36, 38 now weekly.
And then there were also scans at the hospital at 12 and 20 which filled in those big gaps at the beginning quite nicely.

vkinski · 22/08/2013 11:41

Same for me too. I'm 28 weeks at the moment and have seen midwife at 7 weeks (booking in), 12 weeks, 16 weeks, 26 weeks and now won't see her till I'm nearly 33 weeks. I questioned this and she said because it is my 2nd and I am classed as 'low-risk' then they don't see you anywhere near as much as they do with your first or if you were having any sort of problems. I'm not all that comfortable with it, but she did say if I have any worries or concerns - to just make an appt to see her or to call.

onedogandababy · 22/08/2013 11:42

Yes it is right. Check the nhs website and it will confirm the appts. You will of course have the 12 and 20 week scans in between the midwife appts, which will roughly be every 4 weeks.

Tbh, you shouldn't be getting the 25 week appt if this is your second...count yourself lucky!

PinkParsnips · 22/08/2013 11:43

Yes that's same for me - 6, 16, 25, 28 and 31 (booked) so far.

We never talk about anything really unless I ask a question - just straightforward BP, heartbeat, urine.... out the door!

princesscupcakemummyb · 22/08/2013 12:08

this is not my 1st pregnancy but so far ive had booking appointment midwife at 16 weeks then 28 weeks now not untill 34 weeks im 29+5 now they really dont bother much unless your high risk

Artesia · 22/08/2013 12:27

It's my second pregnancy, and I'm getting the same appointments, which is also what i got first time round.

Suspect it's because the midwife resources are stretched so thin, and in any event there's not actually that much they can do for you, other than the BP/heart beat/urine tests so there's no real need to see them more often (unless you're high risk/have a reason for concern). I always assumed info about birth choices, pain relief etc were given at antenatal classes rather than at midwife appointments.

Plus, it's a real pain taking time off work for the appointments!

LittlePeaPod · 22/08/2013 12:28

That's what I was told when i had my booking in at 8 weeks but then I heard about the new One 2 One MW service - www.onetoonemidwives.org/

I transferred from the normal NHS community MW services to the new Ns funded One 2 One MW services at 10 weeks. I have two MWs (primary MW and secondary MW) and a MW assistant. They come to my home for every appointment (anytime between 7am and 7pm to suite my DF and I). I am 21 weeks now and I have seen my MW and MWs assistance nearly every 4 weeks since moving across. They respond really quickly to all my emails/texts with questions which is lot, first time mum to be They are brilliant and I couldn't recommend them more.. I have attached a link in case anyone is interested..

It's the same for me too, midwives just don't see you as often now. I can't even ring my local midwife anymore we have to contact the triage at the local hospital.I only see my local midwife on set appointments my next one at 25 weeks. My midwife Said last time it's because of government cuts.

LittlePeaPod · 22/08/2013 12:38

Ladies have a look at this service. They are brilliant. You get allocated your own MW for entire pregnancy and you see them as much or as little as you like...

It's been the same for me too and it's my first - didn't like the 9 weeks in between at all. Guess they just don't have the time to see people as often as maybe they used to?

Stevie77 · 22/08/2013 13:40

Thanks everyone, good to know it's the same across the board.

LittlePeaPod I couldn't understand from that website if it was free? Also couldn't check where that service was available? Do you know?

Stevie the service is free and all funded by the NHS. The one 2 one team sort it all out with the NHS. Not sure what areas but basically if you go online and register, they will contact you and let you know if they are in your area. If they are, a MW comes to see you (at your convience) to talk through it all. Its only after then that you need to let them know if you want to transfer. Honestly they are brilliant and all my appointments have been as long or short as I want them to be.
