Dark Brown Discharge (but no pain) 6 weeks pregnant...

Well for the past week I have had off and on brown discharge. Its nowhere near enough to soak a pad, but I have noticed that today it has been at its darkest. I dont have any cramping or pain at all.

I have contacted the EPU so im waiting for them to call me back for an appointment but I wonder if anyone else has experienced such a thing?

I suffered with a chemical pregnancy (early miscarriage) 3 months ago and Im terrified the same will happen, however, with the miscarriage it was all over very quickly literally within about 24 hours of the first sign of the discharge and I had period like pains with it.

Thanks for reading.

Noddy I'm sorry you are going through such a worrying time and to hear of your chemical pregnancy. However early the loss it can still be very upsetting.

I hope your EPU get in touch soon and can offer you an early scan. Fingers firmly crossed all is well and the brown discharge is nothing to worry about.

I have experienced this twice - once it lead to an unhappy outcome and the other time all was well.

Hi, I had this at 7 weeks. I am now going on 16 weeks and everything is fine. It must be so stressful for you, I was seen at EPU and scanned, all was fine and the midwife could see where the brown discharge/blood was coming from. I was reassured that its normal and may happen again during the pregnancy.

When I was 7+5 weeks pregnant I started having very small amounts of caramel discharge. I phoned my Midwife for advice and she said to just keep an eye on it and go to my GP if it worsened. It lasted about 2-3 days then stopped. However, 2 days later I had dark brown spotting on tissue paper after wiping which was accompanied by stomach cramps. I phoned my GP who arranged for me to have a scan the next day. I continued to bleed on and off for that evening, not enough to use a pad but there was some staining in my underwear and I was also seeing some stringy brown bits. Me and Hubby obviously thought the worse but thankfully the scan showed a happy foetus with a strong heartbeat. I continued to have stomach ache for a few days and the spotting carried on for another 24 hours but I have been fine now for 4 days. The midwife couldn't give me an explanation as to why it happened but said that it can be very common and very normal.

Try md stay calm and positive x x

In both my pregnancies I have had brown discharge around 7-9 weeks. One doctor told me it is not 'normal', but not uncommon. If there's no pain or cramping that's a good sign. Fingers crossed you can get a scan soon.

Thanks girls. I keep missing the call from the EPU and they are ringing on an 'unknown' number - when you call back on the number from on the internet it takes you straight to an ansaphone so frustrating!

To make it worse I am going away this weekend so I am dreading the worse happening whilst away.

Try not to worry. When I had this the EPU told me it was quite common, and in the vast majority of cases it was nothing to worry about. Hope it all works out well for you.

I am experiencing the same and have been an emotional mess for a few days but am finally listening to all the hundreds of mumsnetters/midwives/medical professionals/friends that say this is very common and does not necessarily mean anything is wrong.

I hope you can get some reassurance from EPAU. I am waiting for a referral after blood test results that I should get tomorrow. Good luck Xx

It's common, but always worth checking with your dr - if things have gone wrong it's better to know sooner rather than later. Good luck.

Hi OP

I'm in a very similar position to you. I'm 5+5 and I've been having dark brown/medium brown/caramel/tan discharge for 12 days now! I have read A LOT (an unhealthy amount) of info about it, and I think that in most cases this is something common, and not necessarily anything to worry about. I have heard some people saying that this is how an mmc could present itself though.

Do you know how far along you could be? Anything more than 5 weeks I would really push for a scan - even at 5+1 they could see a healthy sac and yolk for me (even though it's too early for a foetus).

It did a lot for my piece of mind when the hospital checked that my hCG levels were doubling - make sure you ask for a blood test for this (if they don't routinely offer it).

I know that waiting is so awful, but that's all we can do until scans and tests give a clearer picture. Let us know how you get on? xxx

Hi op, you did he right thing contacting the EPU and hopefully you will be able to speak to them and get a professional opinion soon.

I agree with others it is really common, I suffered from dark coloured discharge from 7-9 weeks and all ended well. Like others have said, try not to worry and rest as much as possible.

Noddyandbigears · 09/09/2013 15:56

Hey Girls,

Just wanted to let you know that I did go for a scan and they saw a heartbeat. I am now 9 weeks and I still get the occasional brown / tan / caramel colour discharge. I think I will feel much more settled when I go for the scan at 12 weeks and they take all the measurements etc.

Fingers crossed. Thanks

I had this as 6/7/8 weeks with my last pregnancy. EPU did a couple of early scans and baby was fine. Had an internal exam and doctor diagnosed cervical erosion - so that could be a possibility. It's just when your uterine cells grow on the outside of the cervix and is (apparently) harmless. Doc said I might need them cauterised after the oregnancy, but as it turned out, smear was clear.

Hope everything works out for you
