What do I need clothing wise for newborn?

I hope I'm not repeating what has already been posted but I would like your input on what I need clothing wise for new baby as a first time mum to be.

A lot of people have told me not to buy too many newborn baby grows/vests as they grow out of these so quickly but to get the 0-3, does this sound about right?

I have so far got 10 newborn baby grows and vests and 10 0-3 baby grows. I obvs need to buy some 0-3 vests (how many?) but do you think this will be sufficient for the early days or do I need more? I keep hearing about explosive poos etc Grin

I take it that's what baby mostly wears in the early days, nappy, short sleeves vest thing and then baby grow on top?

I haven't really bought any outfits as such as I will probably get quite a few as gifts but have seen pyjama tops and bottoms, are these useful? Are they just a fancy baby grow/evening outfit?

I also have 2 cardigans, a snow/pram suit, scratch mittens, hats and socks. Do I need booties or shoes? This will be a late nov/early dec baby.

I would appreciate any input, thankyou!

My 7lber was in newborn for a month or so (in fact they were quite big at first). I think I had about 15 vests and 15 babygros in each size but 10 of each would probably be alright especially if you have a tumble drier.
Don't worry about outfits, booties and shoes (unless snowsuit has no feet).

I think you've got it about right. I'd buy same number of vests as babygrows.

I wouldn't bother with shoes, socks etc at first.

My two were both winter babies - cardigans came in very handy. You can layer them up, and take the cardigan off if you go inside.

When are you due? dS was born in November and mostly wore long sleeved vests with a babygro over the top. Then a cardigan over that if it was vv cold. I had about 10 of each when he was born plus other random bits.
Once you've got over the birth, you will be able to go shopping for anything you need though. I remember panicking that I needed to have everything all ready before hand - but really you don't need to be that organised. You will have poo explosions etc and days where you go through 5 changes but that is what emergency Tesco/Asda shopping runs are for (if like me your DH won't sanction buying a tumble dryer). You can always ask people to pick up a pack of babygros or vests if coming to visit.

Even if you have a difficult labour, you should be up for light shopping around 2-3 weeks and by then you'll know what you need to get more of.

O-3 is big for a newborn. I only bought 0-3 month size stuff and it drowned DS when he was born. He was on the big side of a stage, 7 lb 10oz and was in newborn stuff for about 6 weeks, as was his a stage size sister 3 years later.

Hello, good for you first of all, I didn't know what a vest was at first. I think we had about 10 newborn and 10-15 0-3 vests and baby grows of various arm lengths with some tops to layer with if necessary. We found a warm coat, woolly hat and some gloves were good for out and about (dd wouldn't wear scratch mitts though!). Anything else didn't really get worn. We had a couple of pretty dresses for Xmas but that was it (a lot of hassle otherwise as they're usually asleep!).

Good luck!

Sounds like loads. My DC1 had so many I don't think he wore half of them Blush. Now on DC4 I'm going for the minimalist approach Grin

sounds like you have it covered Smile

i allways end up over buying the in the newborn baby clothes department bit of retail fun haha im on my 3rd dc and still cant help myself on buying things

The amount sounds fine.

It can be very cold for a newborn in Nov/Dec tho, so possibly even get tights to wear under trousers/babygros if your house is cold or you don't keep heating on all day.

With my son even the newborn stuff drowned him at first - he was a five and a half pounder. So we ended up buying tiny baby (7lbs) which he was in for a few weeks, then he went into newborn. I don't think he was in the 0-3 stuff til at least 2 months (even though he started off small he soon went to average in the growth charts).

What I remember though is that lots of the clothes people bought for us were in the 0-3 range, I think to the uninitiated there's a tendency to go for that size as people think you can use it almost straight away but it'll last a while longer than newborn.

Unless your baby is a whopper I think 0-3 is misleading, for most babies it is more like 4/6 weeks - 3 months.

They do grow out of them fast but I can't resist the cute little outfits, I am currently pregnant with what will probably be my one and only daughter and got a couple of cute outfits to go with the sleepsuits and vests, I am trying to restrict myself to just 1 or 2 outfits in each age range 'for best' though and stick to sleepsuits and vests the rest of the time as with my son I went mad buying loads of clothes which he could only wear for a few weeks.
