Did anybody not use non bio washing powder?

Hello all,

My baby is not due until October and whereas I was going to wait to pop all the bits in the wash, the lovely weather is making me think I should do it now and get it out on the line to dry!!

We use bio washing powder normally and I imagine baby's stuff would often be mixed in with ours. Does everyone really use non bio for baby's bits?

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure of the difference apart from it being gentler...... If baby isn't particularly sensitive, would bio be ok or do I need to go out and buy non bio really?

I did with ds and I did all his washing separately until he was about 18 months old! now I don't bother and it all goes in together.
I won't bother with any of that this time it will all be washed together with the same powder etc think its second child syndrome! Grin

I read something on the nappy lady's website that Britain is one of the few countries (think it was European countries can't quite remember) that sell non bio washing power and also one of the highest rates of skin problems such as exemia. thought that was quite interesting and thats when I decided I was definitely not going to bother with non bio.

I found that non-bio didn't get the bright yellow poo stains out of the white vests and babygros so switched to bio Smile

I only use bold as I have eczema and ds2 can also have dry skin at times if I use other powder.

Why in earth would you have to wash the baby's things separately? Just get non bio and do all the washing using that! Don't bother using anything different for yourself.

It is gentler. Your baby's skin when born is so soft and precious so why would you want to use anything which would potentially harm it?

DolomitesDonkey · 20/08/2013 05:44

Nope, didn't use it. They don't even sell it in the country in which I live.

C0smos · 20/08/2013 15:43

Don't sell it here either, so everything gets washed together

I use lidl stuff, both my babies have been fine with it. Maybe of you have ezcema or something it might be needed? But not normally I don't think.

Sleepthief · 20/08/2013 18:28

I've never understood why people have to use bio at all, but each to their own Smile

DC1 had very bad reflux and eventually my washing machine got so clogged up with sicky mould, that the repair man told me I should use bio if my machine was going to cope. My son regularly vomited until he was 2 years old, so I kept with the bio. Can't remember what I did with DC2 but think this time I'll stick with bio for baby but keep my eyes out for any skin reactions.

I buy the cheapest I can find, and smart price brands are usually bio. Never had a problem.

knittingirl · 24/08/2013 08:38

I just whacked the baby's stuff in with ours, didn't even think about whether it was bio or not.

nowwearefour · 24/08/2013 08:44

I found that non bio just doesn't get things clean so after a trial run when dd1 was a few weeks old the non bio got ditched.dd2 didn't even get a trial run. Both their skins are totally fine with bio. And clothes are actually clean!

TripleRock · 24/08/2013 09:25

I wash everything in non bio anyway, so it can all go in together.

Never had a problem getting stains out either on a hot wash and pre sprayed the yellow baby poo with white wine vinegar. Works really well.

ilovepowerhoop · 24/08/2013 09:30

I used non bio for about 2 weeks and then switched back to bio for everyone. No skin issues

Bio is absolutely fine so long as the detergent gets properly rinsed out at the end of the wash the clothes retaining detergent residue is what causes skin irritation. With modern machines using less water it happens more. You may need to add a second rinse at the end of the wash depending on the machine.
