Gestational Diabetes test reaction

Just looking for reassurance really.

Had the test today due to having pcos and felt ok until 1.5hrs into the 2 hour wait and all of a sudden I broke into a serious cold sweat (DH could feel it through my jumper dress!) and felt horrendously sick and nearly fainted twice. It only lasted 5 mins and then I was fine again.

Its made me worried that I could have gd as there were a few of us in the waiting room and everyone else seemed absolutely fine, chatting away etc, and I know quite a few people who've had the test and apart from being a bit dizzy, slight sicky feeling they didnt react like that (and none of them had gd).

Has anyone had a similar reaction and what was your result?
Thanks!

Hi there, if its any consolation I was absolutely fine durning the test and thought I was fine. They said to call in 48hrs for the results.

I had a phone call from the hospital that night to say it was positive and to come in the next day.

I'm now taking metformin to help with the symptoms (I used to have this anyway as I too have PCOS)

Not too stressful even if you do have it. As long as it is controlled your baby will suffer no ill effects.

Thank you, sorry to hear you have it but it does reassure me that if I do have it, that it can be well controlled. I dont know anyone who's had it and I've avoided googling so dont know too much about it apart from big babies!
The only thing the midwife doing the test this morning said about it was that babies can be stillborn which I didnt think was a great thing to say really and probably put me in a panic.

I was tested for GD at 16 weeks due to PCOS and a family history of diabetes and was told that I have it. It's diet controlled and as long as I manage to keep my sugar levels within the acceptable range, I was told there is no reason why I shouldn't go full term and deliver a perfectly normal, healthy baby. Scans at 20 & 25 weeks showed normal growth and other than having to test my blood sugar levels 4 times per day, having GD hasn't affected my life one little bit.

I was very upset when I got my results, did the wrong thing and googled what the implications could be and scared the life out of myself. I've since been put on a google ban by my husband and spend my time instead trying to live as healthy a lifestyle as possible. It's obviously not nice having this added worry during my pregnancy, I would have preferred it not to happen but the hospital I am at is monitoring me closely meaning I have more check-ups and scans than in a non-GD pregnancy which can only be a bonus! I saw my little girl at 20 & 25 weeks, will be going back at 29 weeks and the again a couple of times before she arrives. I speak to the diabetes nurse every week or so and in between scans, I see my local midwife. So far I can't fault the support and advice I've been given and I hope when you go back to the hospital you'll get some better reassurance.

It's not very helpful that the midwife mentioned stillbirth but didn't also mention that GD is quite common and for many woman and babies, it causes very few problems if managed carefully. Take care of yourself, try not to worry too much and certainly no googling! x

P.S I have just realised my response didn't actually answer your initial query!! I didn't have an episode like you described during the test but I did prior to getting pregnant have the odd occasion when I felt like how you described. It was normally sorted out by eating or drinking something which makes me wonder whether all was not so well with my blood sugar levels before I got pregnant. I too took metformin due to PCOS for a while before getting pregnant and would often feel like this whilst taking it. It was when my GP told me to throw the metformin in the bin as it was making me feel bad and wasn't helping me to get pregnant that we conceived a month later!

I'm not sure whether your reaction during the test is an indication of whether or not you will have developed GD, the main thing is that if you have, you should try not to worry yourself too much about it, I am sure you will be well cared for and if you follow the advice you're given, everything should be ok.

I had a very similar reaction, assumed I must have GD. Never got the call so test was negative!!

TarkaTheOtter · 20/08/2013 18:30

I have had GD in both pregnancies (and had borderline results from gtt when not pregnant) and never had a reaction during the test. More likely a result of empty stomach and pregnancy.
I was also called on the same day when I failed, once before I had even got home.

Thanks everyone..

And thanks for all that info Quokka. You're right it was strange how the midwife went straight into talking about the worst case scenario (stillbirths) but she also told me within the space of 5 mins that if I didn't have the whooping cough jab the baby could die as well Hmm which I thought was a bit unneccessary as I'd not even said whether I was having it or not.

Anyway I haven't had a call back as of yet, so fingers crossed!!
