20 week scan all good but one question

Had my 20 week scan this morning and everything is looking fine which was a big relief.

Was wondering if anyone can answer a question for me though. Once scan was finished consultant told me baby was a bit on the small side, according to my notes in the 5th centile. She said everything is fine and as it should be so she's not worried but hubby is 6ft and I'm 5ft 8 and was over 8lbs when i was born so the last thing anyone expected was for me to have a small baby! I'm also diabetic and typicilly a small baby is not something diabetics need to worry about. I'm not overly concerned but there does seen to be some confusion about my dates, going on my last period I'm due jan 4th, by the scan 17th jan and no one seems to be able to decide which is the more accurate out of the two (I had bleeding before I knew I was pregnant and thought it was a period, as a result even I'm a bit unsure of when my last period actually was but estimate would have been between 8-12 weeks when I found out I was pregnant.) Do you think it's possible that actually baby is exactly where it should be but because of the uncertainty over my dates they just think it's small?

Hope that makes sense to everyone, sorry if it comes across as nonsense!

That's odd. I'm 25 weeks and had loads of extra scans (including a detailed feral heart scan) and because I'm diabetic and DD was 10lbs 7oz I asked the consultant about the size of the baby and she was very definite in saying you can't assess sizes until after 28 weeks.

Can you ask you Midwife?

Sorry pressed send to soon.

It's entirely possible the dates aren't right and obviously if the consultant didn't seem worried I wouldn't stress about it.

Besides like you say, being a diabetic you'll probably spend te rest of your pregnancy making sure the baby isn't too big Grin

I have a clinic appointment at the start of next month and they booked another scan for then as well to check the spine which they couldn't get a good view of so will see how that goes and ask then, as I say not really worried about it myself but was wondering if anyone had any experience. And she was very clear in saying some babies are just small!

Told my mum and her first response was does this mean you won't get induced early if your measuring small not big! Almost felt guilty explaining that's not quite how it works :)

How did your dates tally at your 12 week scan? That's usually the date they go by.

I had my 20 week scan this morning and sonographer told us that babies are all roughly the same size until 24 weeks so they cannot comment on size/draw comparisons. After 24 weeks or so they can assess whether the baby is big or small. This was all news to me - didn't get given this info for DC1!
