Gym - what do you say?

So, as I am slightly overweight already and feeling (kinda) up to it, I want to keep going to fitness classes for now.

I am only 4+1 and have read that it is fine to continue. However, the gym instructors always ask at the beginning if anyone has any issues or is pregnant? Do I need to quietly tell them? Or is it too early and they will laugh at me?

Everything I've read says it's fine to continue on as you have done before. There are some yoga poses that aren't great to do (possibly the inverted ones? Can't remember), and I've been pushing myself slightly less hard than before, but in general something you've been doing consistently should be fine.

Thanks Redbug! Did you tell any of your instructors?

I'd have a quiet word with them before the class starts.

I went biking when i was about 6 weeks pregnant but then had a bleed so havent gone near the bike since.
I am walking/ very slow jogging now at 27 weeks but have been doing it all the way through. Have stopped my spinning and weights classes though.
Just mention it to the instructors and dont push yourself as hard and you will be fine.
Congrats!!

Definitely tell your instructors. If they didn't want/need to know they wouldn't ask Smile

I'm still doing some gym stuff, but I've give up my beloved kickboxing. Too many kicks and knees to the stomach, sadly.

I still do spin and body balance each week and I am 21+4.

Just remember you are not there to lose weight any more, but to prepare your body for labour! It is all aboutthe stamina -apparantly :)

Speak to someone at your gym and check the NHS guidelines about excercise so you are clued up.

Don't overdo it, but keep doing what you did before, but at a less 'enthusiastic' rate.

Having said that, I didn't want to tell my instructors until my first scan, so I just worked out a fitness routine in thecgym for the first few weeks. I am back o bc it and loving it. Just getting a little bit slower each week :)

I will keep going for as long as possible.

The Royal Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommend that you can continue pre pregnancy levels of exercise. If you haven't exercised pre-pregnancy then exercise is still recommended but you should start gently with low impact exercise, such as walking and swimming. Just remember that if you are excessively tired then rest may be more important until your second trimester when your energy levels are likely to return. In your second trimester you are advised to exercise for 30 mins most days of the week. It is recommended to stop running by 25 weeks and to avoid contact sports or activities where you could receive a blow (such as falling off a road bike, rugby, netball, skiing ect). You need to ensure that you don't overheat and you should exercise only to the point where you can still talk in broken sentences (ie if you can only get one or two or no words out you are overdoing it, but if you can talk normally you may not be doing enough!) Stop exercsie if advised by your midwife or Doc and if you have any symptoms you are unsure about check first.

But overall, regular moderate exercise has signficant benefits for Mum and baby and should be actively encouraged!

I'd definitely let the person taking the class know, maybe on the wet before hand - my personal trainer was actually the first person I told (apart from my partner obviously!) when I found out I was preg, so she could keep and eye on me and modify stuff if needs be... In fact during horrible first trimester sickness training was the one thing that would actually make me feel human for an hour or so afterwards, if a bit sicky while I was actually doing it!

on the quiet!
