Reasons for why you wouldn't feel the baby moving?

I am nearly 17 weeks gone, have been feeling the baby move for a good few weeks, and now all movements have stopped, I haven't felt anything since Monday, we are going to get it checked out later today, but until my DH get's home, does anyone know any reason (other than the obvious) as to why you would suddenly stop feeling movements?

are you sure you felt it before? I only ask because I didn't feel either of mine move till at least 20 weeks

alexsmum · 15/06/2006 10:28

baby changed position? i know ds1 was behind the placenta for a while and so movement was less obvious.try not to worry.

CountessDracula · 15/06/2006 10:29

No me neither, in fact I think it was 22 weeks even

Maybe what you thought was the baby moving was something else?

magnolia1 · 15/06/2006 10:29

17 weeks is still quite early for movements and they don't normally get regular every day for another few weeks Smile

Maybe baby is just worn out from the lots of wriggling over the previous few days?

Hope everything is ok xxxx

booge · 15/06/2006 10:29

I think it can depend which way the baby is facing, if it is kicking towards your tummy or cervix you can feel it, towards your back then there aren't the nerves. I'll be thinking of you, I do hope everything is fine.

NomDePlume · 15/06/2006 10:30

I felt DD move at 17 weeks. TBH, I would say that going by feeling the movements at this stage is very misleading and could lead to very unnecessary worry and distress.

foxinsocks · 15/06/2006 10:30

yes cd, think with dd it was nearer 24 weeks and with ds (second child) a bit earlier (like 20, 21)

if you did feel them, the baby is still so tiny it could have just moved closer to your back or deeper into your pelvic

foxinsocks · 15/06/2006 10:31

or even pelvis

NomDePlume · 15/06/2006 10:31

Agree that baby has prob floated into another position, not so close to your more sensitive nerve endings.

mrsflowerpot · 15/06/2006 10:32

17 weeks is still really early to be feeling regular movement ime - I was at least 20 weeks with both mine before I felt it regularly. My midwife also told me last time that at this stage feeling movement really depends on the baby's position as you'll only feel movement against your stomach muscles - it can be kicking for England against the back of you and you won't feel it. Lying flat on my tummy used to help me to feel movement in the early days.

But you're doing the right thing getting checked out.

Miaou · 15/06/2006 10:38

Natalie, I had a scan at 20 weeks with ds - I was amazed seeing how much he was moving that I couldn't feel at all. Position accounts for a lot. You are absolutely right to get it checked out but I would guess that your baby has just moved position slightly. Let us know how you get on Smile

I am sure I have been the feeling the baby, just flutters at first that had gotten stronger and in the last couple of weeks some stronger movements almost kick like but not proper kicks.

I felt it most when I led down in bed at night, realised last night I hadn't felt anything and then it dawned on me I hadn't felt it the night before either.

On sunday we were in the car and I had my keys on my lap, they fell on the floor so I bent down to pick them up and my stomache really hurt, I think I bent down to quickly and the seat belt pulled in too tight across my belly, it ached for a bit but I didn't really think anything of it, felt the baby the next day on the Monday but nothing since, I am rhesus negative, should I have gone and got the anti-D? I didn't even think about it at the time.

It doesn't help that I can't sodding get hold of anyone, the number I have for the midwife goes straight to answer phone, the one I have for the ante-natel clinic has been constantly engaged for the last half and hour, even tried the superviser of midwives number and it went through to a lady who didn't even speak English, my GP has no appointments today, emergency or otherwise, I don't even know where we are going to go to get it checked out - A&E at this rate.

NJ... I'm sure that all will be fine. The baby is still very small and so should be nicely protected inside your tum. As to the movements, I felt all of mine incredibly early (despite the cynics). Because baby is so small you won't feel constant movements particularly. It may be that baby is sleeping when you lie down and moving when you are asleep. Try not to stress yourself too much. Which I appreciate is easier said than done.

There would be days when I didn't particularly feel any of mine kick. It's always wise to check things out, but take it easy honey. You haven't done anything to harm baby. I'm sorry but I don't know enough about the rhesus neg to give even a guessed opinion. Will try to remember to look out some info for you, but I'm sure that Pupuce or Mears will come by at some point and they'll know.

NJ - i am Rh neg as well and worried myself when I walked into a door handle at about 20 weeks - I'd only just started feeling the baby move then. after much umming and ahing and advice from mumsnetters, I eventually went to the docs and was cvhekced over just in case but told there is so much there to protect it, it was very unlikely any harm had been done. I was also told anti-d would be for a 'trauma' to the stomach - car accident, nasty fall, football kicked in the stomach etc

don't blame you for wanting to get it checked out, but try not to worry.

SophieB · 15/06/2006 11:05

I didnt feel any movement until about 20 weeks and even then they were quite faint. He did have days of kicking loads then he would have days where he would only kick a few times! remeber that the baby is still small at that stage and will get tired quickly

NatalieJane · 15/06/2006 11:09

Thanks everyone, I have finally got through to someone - don't know who after all the pissing about, but they have said to go down when we are ready and someone will have a listen. So I am now waiting for my DH to get back, he shouldn't be much longer, and pick our DS up from nursery, take him to DH's mum's, and then we can go. Who ever it was I spoke to were saying the same sort of things all of you are saying, but I won't relax until I have heard the heart beat!

Thanks again.

Hi Natalie,

Like everyone else I am sure things will be fine.

Very early on Eeny and I (she woman, me man) felt kicks and movement. She was certainly feeling things at the stage you are but there would be regular gaps and she would worry.

We went and got dopplered a few times and there was always a heartbeat fine.

At that stage they are so tiny they can swim off like little buggers.
Our boy had a liking for swimming down to behind Eeny's bits (who can blame him!).

Re: having a nightmare phoning through - they should give you a set of numbers in your Ante-Natal book which take you straight through. If they haven't, or if the numbers are crap, speak to your GP/Hospital and ask what number you should be ringing whenever you require Ante-Natal advice, or have random concerns. :)

blueshoes · 15/06/2006 12:18

NatalieJane, I read somewhere that it is only after 30 weeks that you should worry if you stop feeling movements. Baby is too small prior to that.

NatalieJane · 15/06/2006 15:21

Thanks everyone, everything is fine, we heard the heartbeat, and are feeling very much relieved, and a bit silly for making such a fuss, but rather that than anything else!

So much for a lovely stress free pregnancy!!

That's great, we all need reassurance sometimes Grin

Salamander · 16/06/2006 12:39

that's good news Natalie.

Never feel silly for checking if you have a concern.

If you didn't check and something was wrong, then THAT would be silly! :)

Well Done!
