I've just drank some still lemonade from Waitrose - looked at the label afterwards and it contains unpasteurised lemon juice which i'm sure you're not supposed to have as it could contain bugs etc. This is my first baby and i'm now panicking! I'm only 12 weeks pg. Am i worrying over nothing?!

Thanks x

Yes you are! Don't worry at all...it's only lemon juice, not like it's rare steak with undercooked shellfish on the side.... It's like you squeezing lemon juice at home and using it in a dressing, don't worry, all fine. Congrats and try to relax (difficult I know!)

eurochick · 15/08/2013 11:47

Yes, you are worrying over nothing. The chances of anything bad happening are miniscule. You are at much greater risk every time you get in a car.

MrBlondesFries · 15/08/2013 11:48

I've done this before wi the lemon lime drink from m&s, ts totally fine, I promise you. It's just like essentially eating a raw lemon. Pasteurisation is just heating to a certain degree, which I beeline for milk is necessary to kill certain UBS, but eating a raw lemon or lime won't harm you or baby.

Can any other MNers confirm this also please?

MrBlondesFries · 15/08/2013 11:49

Sorry that should say "believe" not beeline and "bugs" not USB!

SaucyJack · 15/08/2013 11:50

I'm fairly sure lemon juice is a preservative in itself anyway.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 15/08/2013 11:51

Lemon juice? What could be wrong with it?

This is a bit like the thread where someone was panic stricken because they had eaten a ready-meal that had some wine in the sauce.

Try not to worry over every little thing, it will wear you out and the stressing is far worse for the baby than anything you are likely to be worrying about! :)

Ok thanks everyone! It's probably just the evils of google scaring me again as that says not to drink any unpasteurised juices! I know i probably sound stupid worrying about things but it's hard to know when it's your first and the internet can make you worry unnecessarily.

Definitely stay away from google if you can whilst pregnant! Grin (even though I couldn't)
But it's better to ask on here for reassurance than worry yourself!

Gingerbreadpixie · 15/08/2013 13:56

I think lemon juice is naturally antibacterial, anti fungal and maybe even antiviral! I use it neat for cleaning a lot. So of all the juices to have unpasteurised I think this is the "safest"

Oh and this is exactly the sort of thing I'd have worried about too, don't feel silly. The Internet is scary. Try to stick to NHS, Babycentre UK and good old mumsnet! :)

oscarwilde · 15/08/2013 14:02

If it was pasturised I am pretty sure there would be no vitamin C left.
Chill - there are more germs on your keyboard. Grin

LostMySocks · 15/08/2013 16:58

Lemon juice is much too acidic for pathogens (food poisoning bugs) to survive and grow. Pasteurisation kill the natural yeasts and moulds that cause it to ferment (just like making wine). Don't worry you'll be fine. If youre still nervous remember that if you're not sick then you won't have had food poisoning so short term rather than long term worry

impecuniousmarmoset · 15/08/2013 17:05

Don't worry, I was like you first time round:) third time in, I'm happily eating soft-boiled eggs, shellfish, even the odd half-glass of wine... Stressing so much seriously damaged my mental health during my first pregnancy, which wasn't good for either me or baby, so I had to take a very conscious decision to let minor anxieties wash over me.

Natale28 · 15/08/2013 17:13

Thanks everyone - i will chill! I'm a worrier anyway and i've also been told i have high platelets and need another blood test so i'm just trying to stick to all the 'rules' in the hope that i won't cause any problems! My mum tells me to relax too - she says years ago there was nowhere near as much worry about everything!
