I'm only 4 weeks but the idea of taking no meds during flareups is pretty daunting. I'm usually on buscopan when it's bad, then laxido and deflatine for bloating.

Ditto!! And I have noticed I'm flaring most days now (also 4 weeks along), although manageable at the moment.

Peppermint tea helps to settle my stomach so hoping to use that on bad days with a ginger biscuit (bleurh)

Other than that I have no idea. I have been waking up earlier as there is no way I'm going in work!! Xx

HMT13 · 15/08/2013 08:41

I haven't been allowed to take anything at all. I've just been really really watching what I eat and luckily only had one really bad flare up so far. Seriously started panicking as thought if I can't handle this sort of pain how the hell will I cope with child birth!
I think it's just trying to control it as much as u can, which isn't always possible I know. Not nice though.

I really don't want to gloat, but my ibs has never been as good as it has through this pregnancy!! I have had two maybe three mild bouts of upset tummy with mild pain and I'm now 31 weeks. I figured it was the fact that the pregnancy hormones usually cause people to become constipated having some effect. I'm not constipated, but I would usually have very painful cramps and upset tummy everyday, and that hasn't been the case during pregnancy.

Smerlin · 15/08/2013 10:53

My IBS was terrible during first trimester due to all the new hormones causing sluggish digestion, bloating etc.

Also I have IBS-D and couldn't take Imodium or anything which was tough when I had a flare-up.

However during 2nd/3rd trimesters since the placenta has taken over, I have been absolutely fine.

You can take pure Simeticone tablets which can help with bloating as they don't enter the blood stream.

I don't have IBS, but have Crohns Disease and I echo heffalumptheflump at 30 weeks pregnant I have had no flares up and the pregnancy seems to have sent me in the opposite direction which is a nice change!

Good luck with your pregnancy and hopefully the hormones will take over soon and make things a little easier for you :)

gubbinsy · 15/08/2013 15:19

I have IBS-C and to be honest, didn't notice much difference - constipation a normal way of life for me anyway! Had to stop Colpermin which used to help but found that Rennie Deflatine helps with bloating. Now at 28 weeks and much more regular than was before pregnant (sorry if TMI!)

Dr did say to me that often women with IBS find it improves during pregnancy.

Tea1Sugar · 16/08/2013 02:19

Had 6 days of diarrohea now which is rare for me to have it last so long but I've read it's a symptom of early pregnancy? Hope so. I'm only 4weeks!

I have IBS-D, and suffered for the first 6 weeks.. but I have had no symtoms since, its a godsend!! the bowel relaxes and becomes sluggish during pregnancy, which is what I put the lack of 'quick dashes' down to..

I have to admit it's nice doing normal poops (sorry if tmi), and if anything have become a bit 'backed up', but have been taking raspberry leaf tea which has helped immensley! Smile

Xenadog · 16/08/2013 17:31

This pregnancy has seen an improvement in my IBS - my normal symptoms are plenty of rushing to the toilet but this has been reduced to twice in the 23 weeks of pregnancy.

In fact I find I'm having the "other" problem now - as it were.

Can't suggest anything I'm afraid but I hope your pregnancy gives you some IBS relief. x

Tea1Sugar · 16/08/2013 19:06

Does anyone know if movicol/laxido are ok in pregnancy? I flit between d and c IBS but scared of pregnancy constipation making it even worse!

OP posts:
HMT13 · 16/08/2013 20:45

I've been told definitely no to movicol. Got told the only one suitable is lactulose, but if you have a lactose intolerance that's no good.

pinkr · 17/08/2013 05:48

I was told by my gp that you can still take peppermint capsules...mintec its the ones I take. Although I found iron tablets actually helped rather than made things worse...

RuckAndRoll · 17/08/2013 10:33

I found my ibs really bad in the first 16 weeks but after that it was brilliant. Only 2 or 3 flare ups.
Ds is now 3 wks old and it's still ok, fingers crossed!

theborrower · 18/08/2013 09:47

Watching this thread! I've got IBS and currently TTC baby 2. I've had IBS for years but only last year did I finally get diagnosed, as it were, because I broke down in tears at the Doctors about how fed up I was with it and could they help? Found Mebeverine (and avoiding dairy, caffeine, and alcohol) really help.

I stopped the mebeverine a few months ago as Dr said I couldn't take it if pregnant, and have been genrally ok if I'm watching my diet, but still had a few bad days. I'm obviously avoiding alcohol and caffeine, so that's a help.

I normally have IBS-D, but I remember when pregnant with baby 1 that I was totally constipated in the first trimester! Wind was a bit horrific too Blush

Tea1Sugar - I'd speak to your DR about what meds you can take. Constipation is normally an early sign of pregnancy as the hormone surge makes everything sluggish.

TruJay · 18/08/2013 15:55

I was diagnosed with IBS in my late teens and started having children in early twenties. My first pregnancy completely took it away and after birth I never went back on meds, the only problems I've had since is I have had diarrhoea in the first trimester in each pregnancy I've had but some people say that that is an early pregnancy symptom for them anyway. So no idea why or how but being pregnant seemed to cure all my symptoms and problems and they have so far never returned

KeepTheFaithBaby · 18/08/2013 19:36

I was loads better in pregnancy. I would advise taking a daily probiotic to help keep things regular. Lactulose is ok, I wouldn't use laxido.

Tea1Sugar · 19/08/2013 14:34

Gp has prescribed me lactulose which she checked in the bnf (?) book and says is fine in pregnancy. Only 4+4 so bit nervous about it but (tmi) although I have been able to go everyday without laxido it's been hard/painful. Anyone else had lactulose before?

OP posts:
WhenSheWasBadSheWasHopeful · 19/08/2013 15:57

tea I took lactulose in early pregnancy and it seemed to work just fine for me. I only had 1 week of constipation though.

I seem to have gone the other way and have had diarrhoea for 2 damned months.

Tea1Sugar · 19/08/2013 16:09

When - oh no! Sometimes I don't know whether diarrohea or constipation are worse! Apparently I can have up to 2 x 15ml of lactulose a day, but I'm gonna try just one dose of 10ml
