Baby monitors...I've read some parents are totally against them, not quite sure why though Blush

What do you think of them, and if you don't like them why?

No idea why you'd be against it but didn't use ours for first 6 months as dd was with us to sleep and for naps. I love mine! Having to wean myself off it is proving hard ShockGrin

ChunkyPickle · 14/08/2013 20:41

I live in a bungalow (and previously a 1 floor flat), baby stayed close and co-slept so never saw the point in one.

If you live in a house, so the baby will be in another room or floor to you more often then I can see why people get them.

Also, we're a techie family, so if I wanted to be able to keep an eye on him I'd be as likely to whack a spare laptop/mobile/whatever and watch him over that as spend out for a dedicated device.

K8eee · 14/08/2013 20:43

Wishful I know I have no idea why as a parent you would be against them. I know I will want to use one, as the house were living in is quite old and solid; sound travels very poorly through the floors and walls. Obviously as you say baby will be in with us for the first few months Smile

That makes sense chunky Smile I think is do the same in your position

I've never known a single person be 'against' them. Known some not need them but I can't see why anyone would be extreme in their views about them at all

Mintyy · 14/08/2013 20:47

Please could you put the full question in the thread title next time.

Lydia161290 · 14/08/2013 20:55

Never heard of anybody being against a baby monitor! I'm currently using one with a built in webcam. I live in a big house where I wouldn't be able to hear my baby cry if he did. Being able to see and hear him makes me feel better.

Anothermrssmith · 14/08/2013 21:01

Not planning on having a baby monitor myself as I live in a flat but saw this story on the bbc news website today which you may be interested it

(not posting as I'm against baby monitors just something worth reading if your using one with a webcam function)

K8eee · 15/08/2013 08:11

Jeeeeeze that's scary! Will be careful with the one I buy I think.

Please could you follow the rules of the thread police next time?

I wasted an entire 2.3 seconds on this thread before I realised it was about something in which I have no interest.

TeaAndANatter · 15/08/2013 11:44

I wish my life was so exciting that I couldn't spare the 2.3 seconds to peek (totally commenting very much with tongue on cheek, and giving a cheeky wave to Toby, and ducking from prospective flamers!). As it is, I just can't resist an 'opinions on' thread, mostly because I love chewing over the price of fish! ;-)

Um, I'm not sure I have feelings either way on my old monitors. I didn't much use them, but they did make visiting people less anxious listening out for baby upstairs. Can you get second hand ones, to lessen the annoyance of the cost for you?

BabyMamaDrama · 15/08/2013 13:57

I have the Angelcare mat and audio monitor for 8 week old DD.
Haven't even used it yet but it'll be good reassurance for the time when I'll need it!
I don't see why anyone would be against them. Surely you either want one or you don't? I don't see them as harmful...

K8eee · 16/08/2013 09:59

Me neither, I don't think if be able to rest properly knowing I could miss my baby's cry during the night

I bought one of the ones with a mat to go under the mattress, as a breathing monitor thing.

It was fine until the night DS managed to wriggle far enough away from the mat so that the alarm went off because it couldn't pick up his breathing any more. I almost had a heart attack!

VelmaDaceDinkley · 16/08/2013 10:22

They can be useful. In most cases you only need a basic cheap one though.

PicnicPie · 16/08/2013 10:29

I just bought one yesterday. Tomy Classic. £20 down from £40 in Mothercare. DD is 7 months, but only just bought one because she is in her own room now at night, sleeps in her cot upstairs for naps and I like to go on the treadmill whilst she takes one of her naps. Have only had it 24 hours and its the most basic one out there but does everything I want it to. I love it.

StillPukin · 16/08/2013 11:44

My DS went into his own room at about 4 months old and we used a monitor for just a couple of weeks - I found I got even less sleep than before because I'd lie awake all night listening to it and straining to hear him breathing. I certainly wouldnt be against one though

ButteryJam · 16/08/2013 15:13

I have a video monitor and use it all the time (it's on all say). From bedroom to kitchen. Couldn't do without it in our 2 bedroom house.
