weekend away with a 6 week old - are we totally insane?

We've just booked a weekend away in February at a lodge a few hours away with 14 of our friends. Our first born, who we're taking with us, will be about 6 weeks when we go!

We all grew up together in a small town and are that group of friends who despite being scattered throughout the country and not seeing each other anywhere near as often as we would like are incredibly close. As we've all gotten married the partners have been welcomed into the group as well and we love them as much as the "core group". Next year is the first 30th birthday and for the last few months, before I found out I was pregnant, we were talking about booking a massive lodge at a resort for us all to stay in for the week as a surprise for the birthday boy. We've now booked it and the only concession hubby and I have made to having a baby is that we're staying in a separate 2 person lodge instead of the big one that sleeps 16!

Everyone knows I'm pregnant and we made sure that people were happy for the baby to come with before it was booked (there's no way I'm leaving the baby with one of our mums for the weekend at that age but we're the first couple to have kids) and while I'm looking forward to it now the deposit is paid I'm starting to think of the practical side of this, ie we're going on holiday with a 6 week old! I don't really know what exactly is worrying me, the lodge is only a two hour drive away in a well known resort, I know we wont be partying as hard as the rest of them but that doesn't bother me in the slightest, there's just a bit of me that thinks it will be a disaster.

Anyone any experience/advice they can share about holidaying with a newborn that will settle my mind (or not, I want to be prepared for impending disaster as well!)

Wow thanks for all the responses ladies! Lots of ideas that I hadn't thought of like getting a sling, I wasn't even sure they were suitable for a newborn so will make sure we have one in time for going away. Where we're staying the paths are all stones so even if we take the buggy it wouldn't be a very comfy ride for the little one so a sling is ideal (plus the thought of my hubby carrying our baby in a sling is a really nice picture Wink)

Even though we've paid the deposit I know that if we were to decide not to go our friends would completely understand and because our lodge is separate us pulling out wouldn't make their costs go up. Even though none have kids they all have young nieces and nephews so they aren't totally clueless about being around newborns. I've already said that while the boys may be planning activities like zorbing and archery my main plan is to take advantage of 14 babysitters! The plan is to stay at the resort most of the weekend, when I was talking about partying earlier what I really meant was boozing, as Im planning to breastfeed I wont be anyway so can take myself and the baby off for the night to sleep and leave them to it but I know plenty of them will be willing to help out with cuddles and silly faces to give me some time to myself!

I know you cant predict how you'll feel after something like having a baby but I know what I'm like in myself and if all goes smoothly I honestly cant see me stressing about going away when the time comes, I hope i'm right! Thanks again ladies, you have indeed made me feel better!

A Close Caboo sling is suitable from newborns from about 5lbs, super comfy and easy to use and much better for the baby's hips than a Baby Bjorn style.

We did with 3wk old
Twas good
Tho that when colic hit so maybe just be armed with medicine etc as a back up?
At 6wk old you an be anywhere with them
Maybe hope for wifi or an e tester for middle if night continuous feeding?
Have fun

It'll be same shit (literally) different place.

I was induced at 38weeks with dc1 and I would/could have done it earlier than 6 weeks later. Even if you are stuck on the sofa for the whole weekend you'll have loads of friends in and out to keep you company.

A friend of mine went to a wedding away when her dc2 was a week and a half old. Another couple came to my dh's 30th weekend when their baby was 5 weeks. They stayed in our house rather than camped but they were able to be there all day and seemed to enjoy it. Every birth/baby is different but it will probably be fine at 6 weeks.

It won't be a walk in the park but I can't see how it will be worse than being at home and it could be much more fun.

We went Weymouth for a week when DC4 was 4 weeks old. To be honest he was the easiest one out of the 4 as he just slept or fed.

Haha loving the fact that my number 4 the tiny baby's easy in comparison to the older ones.
