New pregnancy - cramping pains

Hi everyone,

I'm new-ish to the boards. Been TTC for 2 years and had a miscarriage last year really early. I just found out I'm pregnant again but have been having cramping type period pains in my lower abdome, especially on right hand side.

I'm panicking because that's where my miscarriage started last time. I feel stupid to call the maternity helpline because if I am miscarrying I know there's nothing they can do. My boobs are still sore, that's my only comfort, but the cramps are quite painful (like first day of period painful) and I'm really stressed.

I'm sure there have been loads of posts about this but can anybody help me or offer some advice? I'd be really grateful.

Hi bubble I have had the same experience as you - very crampy pregnancy last time and had an MC. Just found out I am pregnant again and cramping this time too. How far along are you? Are you experiencing any bleeding?

I know you had a bad experience last time but lots of people cramp in pregnancy so it can be normal. And there are lots of MNetters who will tell you they bled through the early stages of their pregnancies and everything was fine. If you are still experiencing pregnancy symptoms like sore boobs that is good too.

I would encourage you to call the helpline and also make an appointment to see your GP. Explain you have had a previous MC and are worried you are going through the same thing. Depending on how far along you are they should be able to refer to you to your nearest Early Pregnancy Unit for a scan.

Some EPU's even take self referrals so if you are bleeding as well as cramping I'd suggest taking yourself there and see if they won't give you a scan.

THere is another thread in the pregnancy forum for women pregnant after MC and its full of supportive, positive women. You can find it here:

Fingers crossed everything is ok x

Bubblegum cramping is very normal. One sided pain can be more of a concern. Without wanting to scare monger, it can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, which can be very dangerous. Please contact your GP and get checked out. I'm sure its nothing but its really not worth taking a risk. X

P.s. the pg after MC thread is fantastic.

Firstly, congratulations!

Just to reassure you, I had horrendous pain on my right side (5 weeks) and I went straight to A&E and had tests after tests done to rule out an ectopic pregnancy. Thankfully, it wasn't but I still had pain on my right side but it comes and goes. So after some thorough forum searching it could just be stretching or a cyst (the one you get at the beginning of pregnancy). Apparently some women feel it more than others.. I was also told by the consultant who performed my scan that it was far too early to feel any real pain from an ectopic and if you do it's usually around 8 weeks.

I have had cramping in early stages of all 3 of my pregnancies only one of which (first) resulted in mc so although it's easy to let your mind get carried away, in isolation it doesn't mean anything. Like chloe said, it could be a harmless cyst or nothing at all. From what I've heard of ectopics they are very painful so more than just mild cramps.
Good luck

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Not much to add except I had cramping with both my successful pregnancies (strangely the 3 that turned out to be chem pregs didn't hurt at all time it all went wrong).

Cramping is really common in early pregnancy but by all means get it checked out, it will put your mind at ease. Best of luck.

Oh thank you all so much! Cramping has eased off now. Boobs still sore-ish and I keep prodding them - always something to fret about :-)

Feeling a lot calmer though and starting to feel more excited about the pregnancy.

Thank you all xxx
