Hi there,

final preps for baby (due next weekend) and I realise I don't know what he's supposed to sleep in in a moses basket...

I've got a swaddle blanket and sheets to go over the mattress. do i need a sheet and or blanket to go on top of baby too?

what do babies sleep in in moses baskets?!
thanks in advance

Hello!

Yes if you're using a moses basket then pop a fitted over the mattress.

Everyone has a different opinion when it comes to using loose blankets or swaddling. My DD hated being swaddled when she was a newborn, she would fight and scream and go red in the face until she was out! So, i resorted to a loose blanket over the lower half of her body...sort of up to her waist.

If you put the baby's feet at the bottom of the basket so that he or she cant wriggle any further down under the covers, then it should be fine :-) however, find out what works for you and baby when baby arrives.

Hope this helps, good luck!

I've got a couple of swaddle blankets and a couple of those waffle blankets - it's one or the other I believe... depending on the baby's preference.

My swaddle blankets are from 7lb and I am having my twins tomorrow at 37+3 so are likely to be less than that. Would a doubled up cellular blanket do or do I need a flat sheet and a blanket? I am really worried about them overheating and SIDS given they will be little.

I don't think you ever put flat sheets over a baby - just use a cellular blanket, folded in half if you need more warmth...
Depending on the size of your twins ask the nurses if they should wear hats in bed (term singletons should not wear them as they'll get to hot but maybe smaller babies should...)

I was fully intending to swaddle but the midwife at the hospital said its harder for them to keep warm when swaddled as they can't move around to generate heat. Plus he gets irritated if he can't move his arms up to his face, but that's just his own little quirk I think. I use a fitted sheet over the mattress, and 2 blankets up to his chest (lower than the shoulders). Also, scratch mitts at night or he wakes up looking like something from Walking Dead.
