GTT - can you predict your result?

I had a GTT today at 31 weeks. If you've had one, could you predict your result?

My mind is letting me begin to believe that because I didn't feel anything odd after the sugary drink, my body must be dealing with the sugar properly.

I'm being silly aren't I?!

not silly.

I failed mine,and I felt dreadful afterwards

SillyDecisionMaker · 13/08/2013 20:32

I felt fine after mine. Ended up on 26 units of insulin twice a day by the end of the pregnancy

yummymumtobe · 13/08/2013 20:35

A bit silly I think 😉I had mine not thinking for a second there would be an issue and I had GD.

AnythingNotEverything · 13/08/2013 21:02

Thought as much. Thanks for the reality check!

Silly when you got diagnoised did you go straight on insulin?

midori1999 · 14/08/2013 08:21

I felt absolutely fine in all my GTT's, both in and out of pregnancy, was diagnosed both times, last time with a borderline result at 24 weeks, ended up on huge amount of insulin by the end, this time quite high result at 8 weeks and been on metformin and insulin since 10/12 weeks. Not so much insulin so far this time, I'm 31 weeks so far.

It's very unlikely they'd put you on insulin straight away if you were diagnosed. They usually monitor blood sugars for a week first and some clinics try metformin before insulin too.

whiteandyellowiris · 14/08/2013 08:39

what does do they start you off on, on the metformin

midori1999 · 14/08/2013 09:10

I think that would depend on your testing results over a week. I started on 1 tablet (500mg I think) twice a day and that moved up to two tablets twice a day after a week. I think that's the maximum dose in pregnancy as I started insulin the following week.

whiteandyellowiris · 14/08/2013 09:17

when you started the insulin, did you remain on the metformin too?

AnythingNotEverything · 14/08/2013 09:19

I was told if it is GD, then is attend weekly clinics at the hospital for monitoring. It sounded like actual insulin use was unusual and that most women manage through diet. It might be relevant that I don't have any of the usual risk factors (previous large babies, high BMI etc), but that due to large bump they discovered excess amniotic fluid. Not sure if that means they would treat my case less aggressively?

I felt awful after mine. I nearly fainted and had to lie down between bloods, and didn't feel better until the evening. I 'passed' which shocked me because after feeling like that I was convinced it wouldn't be the case!

midori1999 · 14/08/2013 09:45

Yes, I'm on both metformin and insulin.

Anything if you have it, how they treat it will depend entirely on how well you can manage your blood sugars with diet alone. Sadly, that has nothing to do with risk factors, you either have GD or you don't and it affects everyone differently, even in different pregnancies.

I couldn't manage with diet alone, even with over restricting myself (for which I was 'told off) so I actually found insulin a good thing as it meant I could eat sensibly and if my blood sugars go up instead of having to think about how I can restrict my diet further, I just increase the insulin. It also means I can have the odd 'treat' and adjust my insulin accordingly.

pinkr · 14/08/2013 10:48

I have gd and also the excess fluid.....I have just been diet controlling and they are happy with my levels. I will be induced at 40 Weeks because of it though.

AnythingNotEverything · 14/08/2013 14:11

I haven't had a call (and they said they would if my levels were high) so it looks like I don't have GD.

I've been really surprised at how little information there is available though - I've really struggled, and have scared myself silly on google. I felt like I'd been hit by a sledgehammer, going from a low risk, likely to go to term with a 9lb baby, to extra fluid, GD, additional risk of all sorts of interventions etc. I hope you ladies have the continuing support you need.

Thank God for mumsnet!

Did anyone tell you you were at risk of interventions? Do you think its because of the induction of you need it? No one has told me anything about it really!

pinkr · 14/08/2013 14:45

Oh and I didn't get the call for almost a week after the test...if you have extra fluid it would probably be the reason for it according to my consultant. I'd watch your diet and avoid high sugar food until you get the all clear.

AnythingNotEverything · 14/08/2013 15:06

Pink - they said they'd call this morning if my results were high, so think I'm clear.

And I'm afraid it was google that told me about the risk of interventions. I need to step away from the Internet! I'm probably just as at risk of induction now as I was before - ought to follow my own advice and stick to the NHS website.

pinkr · 14/08/2013 16:42

Ah well hopefully you'll not have it then! Yes the excess fluid may well lead to an induction also...stay away from google as i've managed to terrify myself. I'm convinced I'll end up needing a section, and I read all about the increased risk of pph with the excess fluid. Shame you can't unread things!

AnythingNotEverything · 17/08/2013 21:00

Just to update the thread, I finally got written confirmation this morning. My fasting level was 4.9, and my post glucose level was ... 4.9. I take from these results that my pancreas is doing an awesome job. Phew.

pinkr · 18/08/2013 08:18

Oh that's great! Did they give you any other reasons for the excess fluid then? I'm still bring induced at the end of this week!
