Taking 75mg aspirin daily right up to delivery, anyone done this?

Hi all. I'm T1 diabetic and 38 weeks pg. I'm due to be induced tomorrow.

I was prescribed 75mg aspirin from 12 weeks to help with blood flow through placenta and try to prevent pre-eclampsia. I questioned when to stop taking it and MW said its fine to take up to delivery. I'm not sure they meant the night before though and I can't get through to midwife at the mo.

Anyone taken aspirin the night before birth/induction/c-section?

Hmm I've been told to stop taking it at 36 weeks, and I'm going to confirm this when I see the consultant this week. I'm guessing you're under consultant care, can you ask them?

midori1999 · 13/08/2013 20:26

I have to take 75mg aspirin, this is my second pregnancy with it and its usual to stop at least 10 days prior to delivery. You can have a c section or deliver whilst on aspirin, but they definitely prefer you not to. I never get advice from midwives re this sort of thing tbh, as their knowledge just isn't specialist enough.

I stopped at 36 weeks in my last pregnancy and have been advised to stop at 34 this time due to the slight possibility of early delivery and the fact the placenta is apparently fully formed by then. However, I'm going to try and stay on it until 35 weeks, ill worry orherwise! I'm on it for a clotting disorder, although I also have gestational diabetes.

I would definitely mention to the consultant tomorrow that you have been taking it.

I've been taking 300mg of Asprin, recommended by a consultant and prescribed by my Dr, following recurrent miscarriage which they found no reason for.

The consultant who saw me in this pregnancy told me to take them until 36/37 weeks.

Gingerbreadpixie · 13/08/2013 20:52

The consultant was quite vague when he put me on it. The midwife I spoke to is part of a specialised team who deal with "high-risk" births and said to me that they even advise women on stronger anti-blood-clotting meds plus aspirin to carry on taking till delivery. I'm now wishing I'd gotten a second opinion but I'll just have to skip today's dose and speak to a doctor tomorrow

Also told to stop at 36 weeks by consultant. But you have different risk factors to me so it may be different for you.

MrsCocoa · 13/08/2013 21:02

Think I went up to 12 hours before elective section at 37 weeks (Consultant led care for recurrent miscarriage. Recall I was also injecting Clexane up until eve of birth).

If you have a clotting disorder like APS worth asking someone (GP?) about whether you should take post-delivery (but usual to avoid whilst breastfeeding).

Gingerbreadpixie · 13/08/2013 21:04

No it's just for the diabetes. I don't have a clotting disorder.

I guess some women on blood thinners such as aspirin must go into labour early sometimes before they've had a chance to stop taking it??

Yes, they certainly do Gingerbread. (go into early labour) Obviously it increases risks, hence they usually like you off it by delivery, but I'm not sure by how much.

I'm also on heparin, a treatment dose at the moment, which is twice daily injections, but again, although they prefer a planned delivery, where I come off them, it's not the end of the world if I go into labour spontaneously and I have done twice before when on heparin only.

Mrscocoa, you can take 75mg aspirin when breastfeeding.

I found this on the NICE website re:hypertension in pregnancy which would correspond with what my midwife told me:

"Pregnant women who have a higher risk of developing pre-eclampsia (a pregnancy-related rise in blood pressure with protein in the urine that happens in some pregnancies) are offered a prescription of aspirin (unless this is unsuitable) to take every day from 12 weeks of pregnancy until their baby is born."

I stopped at about 36weeks

Mumlar · 13/08/2013 21:34

Yes I did. Three pregnancies, two with aspirin and heparin. Consultants can be quite vague about when to stop, midwives in my experience don't really know enough about it.

I stopped at 38 weeks with my first, but if my memory serves me correctly, I carried on until the birth with my third. I was then straight onto Tinziparin for six weeks after. All for blood clotting disorder, no gestational diabetes.

Fakebook · 13/08/2013 21:49

I took 75mg aspirin with my last pregnancy up to 36 weeks due to previous miscarriages. This time I was told to stop at 16weeks. I was told taking aspirin until the end could cause uncontrolled bleeding. I would listen to your doctor as they know what's best for you.

SunshineMiddle · 14/08/2013 08:24

I have been on aspirin at the same dose as you. I think it was first prescribed around 20 weeks. I'd had a previous mc and one minor bleed in current pregnancy at that point. When I saw the consultant this week (32 weeks) they said the advice used to be to come off it whilst still pregnant but now they prescribe it to the end. I hadn't thought about exactly when this meant to stop. Will ask at next appointment in 4 weeks.

Gingerbreadpixie · 14/08/2013 09:40

Thanks Sunshine. The NICE guidelines seem to reflect that too. I got through to specialist midwife last night. She said what I've done is fine. I will just make sure I double check with someone today before the induction process starts, just for my own peace of mind.
