The one where you tell your GP that you are pregnant?

I had my first appointment this morning and to be totally honest I was a little shocked at the lack of interest my GP showed, he was more interested in his prescription papers.

I told him I was pregnant and that I'd taken 5 tests to be sure. He just said good and asked if it was planned?! I said yes it was and he said thanks, I'll pass your details onto the midwifery centre.

This is my first pregnancy so im a newbie to it all and so maybe this is right? But i thought we might discuss how far along I was, what I should be doing to help everything go smoothly and what will happen next.

I've feel like I've left with more questions than I went in and now feel a little lost at what to expect next.

I think I was lucky with my GP appointment because I have a lovely GP and because he'd seen me when I'd miscarried and knew we were to start ivf.

He was very good, got me an appointment at EPU to check on the bleeding I had, did blood pressure, reviewed my medication and all with good humour.

I recognise that was a one off though and most appointments don't need to be that detailed, and most GPs wouldn't know the background history.

Congratulations!

Same experience here I'm afraid! Not sure if I expected a hug or what? Grin but I just got a flu jab (do you want it? errrrr yes if you think so?) in the arm and a midwife referral.

The booking appointment (we had at home at around 7/8 weeks) was much more 'exciting' ... if that's the correct terminology! She spent about an hour asking lots of questions and it finally made me believe my 5+ double blue lines :)

Star15 exactly what I'm thinking lol

No gp appointment, just called and was given appointment with midwife/health visitor? Not sure. Then blood pressure n bloods taken and asked for urine sample. It was mostly paperwork though.

I was given a form to fill out by the receptionist and that was passed to the midwife. I was also given a notes folder. I never saw the GP at all! Be prepared for a wait for the midwife too (depends where you are, like all these things!), but I didn't hear anything until 9 weeks, when I got an appointment for 10 weeks.

I felt the same way when I first saw my GP. I had some concerns due to complications with my spine, but I didn't get a chance to ask him because he pretty much shooed me out of the surgery! I spoke to a friend of mine who's a practice nurse and she said GPs aren't actively involved much with women during pregnancy and that today's home pregnancy test kits are as reliable as the tests previously done at the Drs, so it's not considered the norm for them to do much when you go to tell them you're pregnant. My midwife team have been smashing though (I'm 27 +3), I had my appointment at 8 weeks, then it felt like an eternity until my 12 week scan! Good luck and many congratulations Smile

Does your GP give you the maternity prescription free certificate or can the midwife do that too? Does that cover you for dental treatment too?

EeyoreIsh · 13/08/2013 21:24

my GP gave me my certificate, bit the midwives were expecting to do it at my booking on appointment.

SeriousStuff · 13/08/2013 23:05

pretty if I remember correctly, letter confirming booking in appointment and first scan arrived at around 10 wks. The early stages really feel like they drag, but trust me, you'll soon be in your 3rd trimester wondering where the time went. Good luck!

prettyinpink90 · 14/08/2013 08:38

Thanks serious! It feels like 12 weeks is so far away, especially when we have decided to wait to tell everyone until after the scan. I can't wait to see something to prove to myself it's actually happening!
