How long do nuchal results take?

FredFlintstonesSister · 13/08/2013 09:40

I have my 12 week scan today and will be getting the nuchal done. It's the combined (cubs) test so there will also be a blood test. I am really worried about this test as I am 34 and also a born worrier. I know I'll have to wait for the blood results but does anyone know how long? Also, will they make a comment based on what the see during the scan today or do I have to wait and get both results at once?

Mine took 2 weeks - just as i was starting to fret about it not turning up! I got the results of blood test (where thy give you the chances) and scan at the same time, although i didnt have the test which tells you for more or less definite.

TallulahBetty · 13/08/2013 09:49

Oh and after the scan she said it all looked 'normal' but that i would need to wait for tathe official results.

FredFlintstonesSister · 13/08/2013 09:51

I'm not planning on having the amnio either, which is why I think I'm so nervous about this one. If the results are good it will be one less thing to worry about but if they look bad I'll still be freaking out for the rest of the pregnancy!

I had counselling before mine as it was a twin pregnancy. I was told that if the combined risk was high then I would get a phone call within a week, if the risk was lower than 1 in 150 then I'd get a letter in the post after two weeks.

The nuchal measurement will be written in your notes today and then blood results should be about 2 weeks.

At my 12 week scan the measurements couldn't be taken as baby was lying the wrong way so had to be re-scanned the following week.

FredFlintstonesSister · 13/08/2013 10:12

Thanks, did they make any comment about the nuchal measurement? I'm not sure I'll know whether it's high or low risk without some feedback!

At my scan all she said was "everything looks normal and there's no concerns"

FredFlintstonesSister · 13/08/2013 10:24

I hope they say that at mine!

I'm sure they will! Good Luck Smile

34 isn't a reason to be worried! They'll prob give you an indication and you can always ask the sonographer what the nuchal measurement she writes means. You'll get a letter in a few weeks with the results, and you'd get a call much sooner if there was a problem. Enjoy your scan!

andadietcoke · 13/08/2013 10:43

Please don't google 'normal' NT ranges. It'll drive you insane and won't help at all. I got myself incredibly worked up about it.

MrsPatMustard · 13/08/2013 10:45

34 is still young! If it makes you feel any better - i'm 39 (so statistically had a 1:120 chance of Downs.) I got my result back from the combined test a few weeks ago and it readjusted my chances to 1:10,000. So age isn't the be-all-and-end-all in these things....

I know it's easy to fret but try and enjoy the scan - it's amazing seeing your baby on the screen for the first time.

Xenadog · 13/08/2013 11:01

The measurement was put on my notes and when I read them (about a week later as I didn't think to look) I felt reassured as the measurement was low. Then about a day later I got a letter saying what my risk was.

All in all about a week to get it confirmed if things are fine and I imagine they would call you directly if there was something to worry about.

I understand the fretting and worrying though. Everyday of this pregnancy I have something new to worry about and I feel a bag of nerves!

Wilberforce2 · 13/08/2013 11:52

I had the scan results on the same day as in the sonographer came out gave us the paperwork and said "everything was within the normal ranges" and that she had no concerns. I had the blood test on the same day (Wednesday) and the results came in the post on the following Monday. I'm 34 and my risk for Downs was 1:2600 or something similar, I was quite happy with that but have since heard of people who have had their risk as 1:10000 so it does worry me that mine was a lot lower! x

TallulahBetty · 13/08/2013 12:41

Mine was 1:250,000! The midwives said they'd never known it as low.

Kelly1814 · 13/08/2013 12:44

Mine was the same day but I went to the fetal medical centre.

MrsPatMustard · 14/08/2013 08:58

Wilberforce Sorry if i made you worry. 1:2600 is still very good. I had a friend that got 1:3.....

x0gawjus0x · 14/08/2013 09:03

How was your scan fred x

GreatJoanUmber · 14/08/2013 13:57

Fred it takes up to two weeks for the letter with the combined results to arrive. But if you want to know sooner, call the screening department directly - number might be in your notes or you can ask your MW for the number. They can tell you a few days after.

FredFlintstonesSister · 14/08/2013 20:08

Scan went well but no comment made about nuchal measurement. They told me if there was anything to be concerned about they would phone within the week but otherwise I should get a letter in about a fortnight. I'll just try not to worry too much in the meantime!

I never got a letter telling me my results Confused I had the blood test at the 12 week scan but not heard anything about it. i'm 22 weeks now...

Writerwannabe83 · 14/08/2013 20:45

I was wondering this too. I haven't had the test yet but me and Hubby were talking about it in regards to letting other people about the pregnancy. It is hard enough not to shout it out to anyone who will listen, let alone having to wait a further 2 weeks after the 12 week scan. It's going to be difficult.

What sort of factors go into the calculation of risk??

MrsPatMustard · 15/08/2013 07:45

Fred there should be a note about nuchal measurements in the paperwork the sonographer gave you. It'll say something like 'NT' and then a measurement....

Middy75 · 15/08/2013 08:28

They look at your NT, bloods, age, if you smoke and then weigh you to get your risk factor. I had my scan yesterday and asked if my NT was 'normal' but the sonographer just said the measurement by itself is ambiguous. If you have a high risk they ring you quite quickly.

Writerwannabe83 · 15/08/2013 08:32

Oh right - I knew that age had a bearing on Downs Syndrome but not a person's weight and smoking status. I'm 29, have never smoked and only have a BMI of 20.7 so hopefully I'll be in the low risk category. But never say never eh?!

What percentage is classed as high risk and what is the average risk?
