in the last few days i have the itchiest bump ever! have been oiling and moisturising it to no avail! what are your tips for some itch relief?! Randomly my hands are a bit itchy too but i am putting that down to dry hands after a huge nesting/cleaning session...

itch relief tips gratefully received!

Itchiness and esp itchy hands can be a sign of obstetric cholestasis which affects your liver function. I would
ring midwife.

FoofFighter · 12/08/2013 17:12

that^^

mamamidwife · 12/08/2013 17:14

Get yourself checked, it doesn't have to be urgently, but in next 24hrs either with your midwife or your maternity day unit, they need to rule out cholestasis

fluffandnonsense · 12/08/2013 18:25

I had exactly the same and it was choleastasis. It was over the Xmas period and somehow my blood results had been missed. I called the hospital and they told me to get piriton from the chemist, I told them they were all closed so they said to pop up to MAU. They decided to check my notes and then freaked! Said I couldn't go home and would be induced the next day. I dread to think what may have happened if I hadn't have gone looking for some piriton. Get yourself to the midwife and get a blood test ASAP. Don't be fobbed off!

Op if it does turn out to be just plain old itchiness, I found Avent Moisturising Light Oil brilliant for relieving my insanely itchy bump last year!

ZingWidge · 12/08/2013 18:36

what loulou said

and itchy feet too! get checked out tomorrow, please.

if it's just itchy skin I recommend E45 cream, ask them to prescribe the 500ml tub with pump (will save you £10 or so!)

IChangedMyNameToMe · 12/08/2013 18:39

Thanks all...have a midwife appointment first thing so will let them know..

please update when you know, I worry about you!

badguider · 12/08/2013 22:33

sounds a lot like obstetric cholestasis - take your hospital bag with you to your appointment as I don't want to scaremonger but you might be induced as you're 38 weeks.

ZingWidge · 13/08/2013 08:24

OP how are you today?

IChangedMyNameToMe · 13/08/2013 11:23

Hello - thanks for your concern you are v kind... I saw the midwife this morning and had some bloods taken and need to ring back at the end of the day/early evening for results. She didn't seem overly fussed.

I am feeling quite itchy on bump/legs/hands but have noticed my skin has suddenly gone very dry so hopefully just that.... I am scheduled for a c section on Monday next week anyway, so my appointment was the pre c section details and check, she said if it was anything it may mean I meet baby before Monday...but glossed over that... will know more at the end of the day I guess....

Fingers crossed your bloods are ok and it's just dry skin :) and good luck for Monday/whenever!

Sam100 · 13/08/2013 11:45

My friend had this at the end of her pregnancy - was checked for cholestasis - which it was not. Turned out she was allergic to being pregnant - doctor said it was a reaction to high levels of hormones and would go once she had delivered! Which it did. She just had to slap on loads of cream to stop herself itching so much over the last couple of weeks. Sorry if this is not much help. Oats in a bag in the bath is supposed to relieve itchy skin for chicken pox - maybe worth a try!

Sam100

Grin and PMSL @ "allergic to being pregnant!"

IChangedMyNameToMe · 13/08/2013 17:04

bloods are back....it is just dry skin itching thank goodness!

oh, great news OP!

if your symptoms get worse, however, do not hesitate to call MW/GP and get checked out or get another blood test.
