Been craving them so badly in pregnancy and avoided them. Can I have eggs Benedict or runny egg and soldiers? What are the risks?

If they were lion-marked eggs (and supermarket eggs nearly always are) then it was probably safe to eat them anyway.

The last time they were tested, not one egg was found to have any salmonella.

DIYandEatCake · 12/08/2013 15:37

It's up to you but I've eaten runny eggs all the way through - I'd heard that lion marked eggs (ie the ones sold in supermarkets) are from hens vaccinated against salmonella (? Someone else might know more about this!).

MeerkatMerkin · 12/08/2013 15:38

Go for it. There is the tiniest risk imaginable of salmonella. Tiny risk reduced even further by eating a lion stamped egg (from the supermarket).

Not much in life is better than a soft dippy egg and soldiers!

LegoRelatedInjury · 12/08/2013 15:40

I ate runny eggs through both my pregnancies. I couldn't resist!

Enjoy your dippy egg. One of life's joys!

Bunnylion · 12/08/2013 15:42

I've eaten runny eggs the whole way through. Even made some homemade mayonnaise last night.

Make sure they are Lion stamped, which means they've been vaccinated against salmonella.

If you did get salmonella (from foreign eggs) you could get diareah and vomiting, which could be dangerous for you and your baby.

MrBlondesFries · 12/08/2013 15:43

Thank you. They are lion stamped. Does hard boiling eliminate the risk of salmonella then?

OP posts:
Bunnylion · 12/08/2013 15:44

It does, but so does vaccinating the hens - as lion stamped ones are.

BillComptonstrousers · 12/08/2013 15:45

It was safe to eat lion stamped ones all the way through surely Grin will this set off a pregnancy rage now you've found out?

MrBlondesFries · 12/08/2013 15:49

So I can eat them runny? The nhs website says to cook them properly even lion stamped ones? Or have I got that wrong? I want a stack of pancakes with runny eggs now!

GobblersKnob · 12/08/2013 15:53

Don't do it, I got salmonella in my last pg from only slightly runny eggs (restaurant gammon and eggs, asked them to cook the eggs through, they didn't quite and I was hungry so ate them). Jesus, I was soooooooo ill, horrendous.

Wait until you have an immune sytem back, it's so not worth it.

ratqueen · 12/08/2013 15:53

I have ignored that advice during both pregnancies. I eat free range organic eggs, never heard of lion stamped, but either way I am sure they are fine. Edwina Curry is to blame for all the egg fuss anyway - would you take her advice on anything else? Wink

My midwife said official guidelines say to still not eat runny eggs but that it's a matter of being slow updating paperwork, not refkective of actual current risk to pregnant women.

Here is a quote on the facts, which a previous poster also reflected: An FSA survey of imported eggs on sale in the UK, published in 2006, found egg shell and/or contents contamination in one in 30 boxes of six eggs sampled. HPA tests on imported eggs in 2004 found nearly 7% tested positive for salmonella. In the same HPA investigation, salmonella was not recovered from any British Lion eggs. from here

Babybump26 · 12/08/2013 16:08

We have our own chickens at home and I've eaten eggs from them runny, I make sure the white is cooked but you can't beat a runny yolk! I've not had any problems Smile

CakesAreNotTheAnswer · 12/08/2013 16:11

If it helps you decide, the risk is mainly to you and not the baby I believe. unlike with listeria from soft cheese

Lanceolate · 12/08/2013 16:15

Salmonella poisoning is utterly shit. Think diarrhoea, vomiting and feeling drained of life and being unable to eat more than crackers for 5-7 days. I'd imagine having it while pregnant would be much worse.

MrBlondesFries · 12/08/2013 16:25

Thank you all for the advice. I'll hold off (grumpy face) have had lots of vomitting bugs in this pregnancy and don't want the risk of salomenella.

DaveMccave · 12/08/2013 16:25

I've eaten runny eggs all the way trough this pregnancy. It's ridiculous advice. There is more chance of getting listeria from bagged salad (again minimal risk) and they don't recommend not to eat that, but it is the reson were meant to avoid un pasteurised cheese. I don't think there is a risk of getting salmonella from eggs personally.

Damnautocorrect · 12/08/2013 17:04

As up the thread british hens are vaccinated against salmonella.

pinkr · 12/08/2013 18:43

I've been eating them since 12 Weeks...I love runny eggs! ! I think the risk is tiny...when did you last get salmonella? I think the vaccination is pretty good...that said I only eat runny eggs that I've cooked, I wouldn't trust restaurants etc

TobyLerone · 12/08/2013 22:15

Actually, there is a recommendation not to eat bagged salad.

I eat it. And runny eggs. I even lick the spoon if I'm making a cake. And I eat goats' cheese if I fancy it.

Living on the edge, me :o
