Hi don't know if this is the right section to be posting on but basically my concern is about what bottles to use for when baby comes. I think I am going to try breast feeding for 6 weeks but what bottles should I then move on to? As the most popular is tommy tippee ones but a lot of people I know have complained they have given their children colic. So was just wondering if you ladies could tell me what you have used or what you plan to use? Also some advice on bottles from birth as well incase I am unable to breast feed. Thank you very much xxx

We used Avent and found they were fine. The SMA ready mixed bottles come with disposable teats that you can sterilise and re-use -- very handy for when you are out and about. We got some Dr Brown's bottles which are supposed to reduce colic, but they were annoying and leaky!

I used the TT 'Closer to Nature' ones - not sure whether they caused an extra wind in dd tbh, although she was a crier! Would be open to trying a different type this time (pg with #2)

Yes been told Avent are good. Should I just get regular ones and hope for the best or get anti-colic ones? Jut petrified about my baby getting colic as my nephew had it and barely slept and his parents were miserable because they couldn't find anything to help it! Thank y

I wouldn't buy bottles until after you've tried BFing for a bit,you never know, you might want to continue. Smile

We used both the classic Avent and the anti-colic initially. DD didn't seem to mind but we found the anti-colic ones annoyingly leaky - and DD certainly wasn't windier after one or the other.

We mixed fed right from the beginning with no problems (not my first choice but DD was jaundiced) though a lot of people talk about nipple confusion. After your supply is established (can take quite a while!) I would probably consider trying your DC with the occasional bottle of expressed milk or formula on a regular basis i.e every few days. Loads of my friends found it really tough 4-5 months in when they wanted an occasional break/extra few hours sleep but LO refused to take a bottle, and it's nice to know someone else could feed them if necessary/in an emergency. At the end of the day though, just do what you feel is best for you and your DC.

I'd also warn that some DCs will not take a bottle at that stage - DD was one if them.

I EBF'd and at six weeks had my first night out with girlfriends. I expressed bottles for her, and at about 11pm got a call from DH saying she wouldn't take it. It took four months and a blood of sweat and tears to get her to finally take a bottle.

With this DC I will be giving an expressed bottle from my milk coming in daily - or rather DH will.

I am about to have my 4th baby and have fostered many babies previously so have used a range of bottles. The best I have found by a long shot are MAMS. I guess it does come down to individual preference though.

When my DD was refusing to move from bf to bottle we used the laytex bottles with the collapsible inserts and the latex nipples. It was the only thing that worked.

Mayanbob · 10/08/2013 08:55

I have no baby yet- but my local breast feeding peer supporter absolutely raves about MAM bottles.

Yonionekanobe · 10/08/2013 09:59

Amiee, we used similar - Breastflow. This was having spent a small fortune in other brands!

Nuk with the latex teat were brilliant in the first few months Then mam bottles are awesome I only have TT ones in atm dc2 due in Sep as they were on offer but they are good for when baby is post 6 months. I found advent terrible too hard for my wee one to get milk from. hope that helps!
